The first self-driving trip to Hunan took a total distance of 3,128.4 kilometers. So far, since 2010, I have set off from Shanghai and traveled by car in 14 other provinces and cities, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Anhui, Fujian, Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Liaoning, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hunan. This trip was not easy. I accidentally sprained the sole of my right foot in the ancient town of Jinggang in Changsha. I limped for two consecutive days, but I did not give up. The whole journey was second only to the 2017 Xi'an Hancheng self-driving tour (3570 kilometers). The following picture was taken at Aiwan Pavilion in Yuelu Mountain.

December 7, 2019 (Quzhou weather: sunny, 0 to 12 degrees)

At 13:46, I arrived at Fengjing Toll Station of Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway. A total of 85.5 kilometers were traveled and the highway toll was 33.25 yuan. Add No. 95 oil for 230 yuan, 7.2 yuan/liter.

At 14:05, we arrived at Dayun Toll Station of Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway and traveled a total of 98.6 kilometers.

At 18:28, I arrived at the Quzhou East Toll Station of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway. A total of 416.6 kilometers were traveled and the highway toll was 142.5 yuan.

Stay at Qujiang Oriental Hotel in Quzhou, which is listed as a four-star, superior twin room, 316 yuan (including double breakfast). The hotel has convenient parking and large rooms. Adjacent to the local Oriental Commercial Building, it is convenient for shopping and dining. Breakfast is abundant and the restaurant environment is also good. The shortcoming is that the central air conditioner has a deviation in the effect of turning on the heating. In addition, the sound from the closing of other rooms was very loud, even a small vibration.

Zhejiang Quzhou Dongfang Group operates a number of four-star hotels in Quzhou and won the National May 1st Labor Medal.

The north side of the hotel is adjacent to the Qujiang District Government Building of Quzhou City.

At 11:28, it arrived at the Quzhou East Toll Station of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and traveled a total of 427.3 kilometers.

At 11:42, I arrived at the Houdock parking area of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway to rest, and drove a total of 447.2 kilometers.

There was a serious traffic jam on the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway for 8 kilometers. We bypassed the Beijing-Taiwan Expressway, Hangzhou-Changzhou Expressway, Dechang Expressway and Nanchang Ring Expressway, and our driving mileage increased by more than 40 kilometers.

At 12:02, I arrived at the Fangcun Parking Area of Beijing-Taiwan Expressway to rest, and drove a total of 463.4 kilometers.

Turn from Beijing-Taiwan Expressway to Hangzhou-Changsha Expressway.

Compared with the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, the Hangzhou-Changsha Expressway and Dechang Expressway, which are also east-west, have less traffic.

At 12:51, I arrived at the Yinlingguan Toll Station of Hangzhou-Changsha Expressway. I traveled a total of 526.5 kilometers and charged 52.25 yuan for the highway.

At 17:31, I arrived at the Hujiafang Toll Station of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway. A total of 865.3 kilometers were traveled and the highway toll was 156.97 yuan.

Stay at Zhangshu Kaiyuan Mingdu Hotel, which is listed as a five-star, executive river view twin room, 354 yuan (including double breakfast). Zhangshu is a county-level city under Yichun, Jiangxi Province. This newly built hotel is the most exclusive hotel in Zhangshu, and Kaiyuan Mingdu is a well-known brand of Chinese-funded high-end hotels. The fly in the ointment is that there are large trucks driving by the road in front of the hotel all night long. The noise is obvious and affects sleep. There are many high-rise buildings built around the hotel, but the commercial facilities are not yet mature. The hotel's breakfast room overlooks the Ganjiang River. It has a good scenery and good interior decoration. However, the breakfast variety is average and there are almost no meat dishes.

As of that night, a total of 875.7 kilometers had been driven, with an average fuel consumption of 6.1 liters/100 kilometers.

Liuyang Confucian Temple and Tan Sitong's former residence are both free museum attractions and are not open on Mondays (December 9, 2019), so we went there again the next day.

Liuyang Confucian Temple is located on the campus of No. 1 Middle School in Liuyang City. It was built in the Song Dynasty. The temple faces the street and backs the mountains. It is one of the well-preserved Confucian temples in China.

It takes about 5 minutes to walk from Liuyang Confucian Temple to Tan Sitong's former residence.

A small road next to the former residence is called "Si Tong Road".

Tan Sitong's former residence. Tan Sitong was one of the "Six Gentlemen of 1898". He was born in Liuyang, Hunan Province. He was a famous politician, thinker, and reformer in modern times. Tan Sitong's father, Tan Jixun, was admitted to the Jinshi in the ninth year of Xianfeng (1859) and became an official in Beijing. Due to his personality preference, he bought the ancestral temple originally owned by the surname Zhou as a private residence. After several constructions, it became an existing courtyard-style residential building, which was built in the late Ming Dynasty. When Tan Sitong's father, Tan Jixun, was appointed governor of Hubei, due to his prominent official position, he was granted the title of "Dafu Di Official Residence", or "Dafu Di" for short.

Stay at Changsha Xiaoxiang Huatian Hotel, which is listed as a five-star, superior view twin room, 460 yuan (including double breakfast). This is a hotel owned by Huatian Hotel (000428), a listed company on the small and medium-sized board. It is located in the downtown area of Changsha, and the ginkgo trees on both sides of Furong Avenue are the most beautiful season. I was worried that it would be a bit noisy, but it was actually very quiet. First, the guest room was on a high floor and we lived on the 26th floor; second, the window glass was soundproof. There are a lot of foreigners staying in this hotel. Parking in the underground garage is convenient.

The hotel is in the same building as Bank of China Hunan Province Branch. This building is called Hunan International Finance Building.

The hotel is located at the northeast corner of Furong Middle Road and Bayi Road. The picture below shows Bayi Road crossing Furong Middle Road.

Looking out from the guest room on the 26th floor, you will see Furong Avenue on the left and No. 1 Middle School in Changsha City on the right.

The Tianxin Pavilion Ancient City Wall is the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on March 5, 2013. It is an ancient building and the era is Ming. Tianxin Pavilion is a tower in the ancient city of Changsha. It was built in the late Ming Dynasty and was rebuilt during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. During the Anti-Japanese War, Tianxin Pavilion was rebuilt in 1983 due to the Wenxi fire. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1398), Qiu Guang, the commander of the Changsha garrison, built the Changsha city wall, replacing all the earthen city walls built in the Yuan Dynasty with stone-based bricks. Only a section of the ancient city wall of Tianxin Pavilion is left, and the rest has been demolished.

Tickets for Tianxin Pavilion are 32 yuan.

During the Anti-Japanese War, the tragedy of the Wenxi Fire occurred in Changsha, making Changsha one of the most damaged cities in World War II (alongside Stalingrad, Hiroshima and Nagasaki). On November 12, 2005, on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the "Wenxi Fire", the "Wenxi Fire Warning Bell" was specially cast.

Driving to Orange Island took a lot of trouble. Parking spaces in Juzizhou are limited and are not open to cars on non-working days and Friday evenings. The day we went was on Tuesday, but we couldn't drive in because the parking space was full. Walking back and forth on the Juzizhou Bridge, we found that the car drove in again and then went around in circles.

Juzizhou is a free attraction, but the distance from north to south is too far, so you need to transfer to a scenic spot sightseeing bus for a 20-yuan ticket. You can get off and sightseeing halfway, but most tourists get off at the southernmost tip (Mao Zedong Youth Art Sculpture).

Juzizhou is located in the center of the Xiangjiang River. It is the largest among the many alluvial sandbars in the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River. It is also the largest inland continent in the world. It traverses the center of the river from south to north, west to Yuelu Mountain, east to Changsha City, and is surrounded by water on all sides. It stretches for more than ten miles, with a narrow part about 40 meters across and a wide part about 140 meters across. It is shaped like a long island.

Mao Zedong's youth art sculpture takes the image of Mao Zedong in his youth in 1925 as the artistic prototype.

December 11, 2019 (Changsha weather: sunny, 5 to 19 degrees)

The breakfast in the hotel is very good, especially the freshly made Hunan rice noodles are delicious, and you can add braised beef at will.

Parking at Yuelu Academy also took a lot of trouble. Yuelu Academy is the predecessor of Hunan University. Hunan University has no walls or gates, but the parking lot is only open to internal vehicles. The closest public parking lot to Yuelu Academy is located on Pailou Road, which is nearly 1 kilometer on foot. This parking lot is very small and parking spaces are tight. Under the guidance of the parking lot staff, we paid 20 yuan to park the car in the garbage transfer station across the street. In fact, both Yuelu Academy and Juzizhou can be reached by subway.

The early building complex of Hunan University, the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on March 5, 2013, is an important historical site and representative building category in modern times. The period is from 1920 to 1950. This time, the national insurance policy includes multiple buildings. The following photo is the auditorium of Hunan University.

Yuelu Academy is the third batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on January 13, 1988. It is an ancient building and is in the Qing Dynasty. Yuelu Academy is one of the famous "Four Great Academies" in Chinese history. Among the "Four Great Academies", there are no disputes among the three major academies: Yingtianfu Academy (now the South Lake of Suiyang, Shangqiu, Henan), Yuelu Academy (now the Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, Hunan), and Bailudong Academy (now the Lushan Mountain in Jiujiang, Jiangxi). There is controversy as to which Songyang Academy (now Songshan Mountain in Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Henan) and Shigu Academy (Shigu Mountain in Hengyang, Hunan) will be included. In 1998, the State Post Bureau held the launching ceremony of stamps for the "Four Great Academies". The academies selected for the stamps were "Yingtian Academy, Yuelu Academy, Bailudong Academy, and Songyang Academy." Tickets for Yuelu Academy are 40 yuan.

On the west side of Yuelu Academy there is Quzi Temple, which was rebuilt in September 2006.

Coming out of the back door of Yuelu Academy is not far from the Aiwan Pavilion. Except for Yuelu Academy, Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area does not need to buy tickets.

Aiwanting is the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on March 5, 2013. It is an important historical site and representative building category in modern times, covering the period from 1913 to 1918. Aiwan Pavilion is located in Qingfeng Gorge of Yuelu Mountain. It was built in the 57th year of Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1792). It was founded by Luo Dian, the chief of Yuelu Academy in the Qing Dynasty. It was originally named Hongye Pavilion. Later, it was owned by Bi Yuan, the governor of Huguang. According to the poem "Stop and sit in Love Maple Forest at night, frost leaves are red than February flowers", renamed Aiwan Pavilion. Aiwan Pavilion is one of the "Four Famous Pavilions". The other three are Zuiweng Pavilion in Chuzhou, Taoran Pavilion in Beijing, and Huxin Pavilion in Hangzhou.

There is a horizontal plaque in the pavilion engraved with the words "Miyuan Spring·Changsha" written by Mao Zedong. On the front of the pavilion, a vermil-colored gilded "Love Wan Pavilion" plaque is inscribed in honor of Mao Zedong.

Yuelu Mountain is one of the four major maple appreciation places in my country. The other three are Xiangshan Mountain in Beijing, Qixia Mountain in Nanjing, and Lingyan Mountain in Suzhou.

The cave in the picture below is the wartime command post of the 9th Theater Command during the Anti-Japanese War.

From Aiwanting to Lushan Temple, if you take a short walk, you will have to pass a steep slope.

Lushan Temple is a national key Buddhist temple in Han nationality areas. Lushan Temple is located on the mountainside of Yuelu Mountain. It was founded by Li Fachong, a disciple of Dunhuang Bodhisattva Li Fa Hu, in the fourth year of Taishi (268 AD) of Emperor Wu of the Western Jin Dynasty. It is the earliest relic of Buddhism entering Hunan.

The former site of the Xinmin Society is the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on March 5, 2013. It is an important historical site and representative building category in modern times. The era dates from 1918. On April 14, 1918, Mao Zedong, Cai Hesen and other 13 people met here and established the Xinmin Society. It was the earliest established among many progressive groups with students as the main body during the May 4th Movement period. In 1920, the Hunan Communist Group was established, which wrote a glorious page in the history of the Chinese revolution. During the Anti-Japanese War, the former site was destroyed in the war, and the site was rebuilt in 1972 as it was original. Free visit.

You can also see the former site of the Hunan District Committee of the Communist Party of China, the former residence of Mao Zedong and Yang Kaihui in Qingshuitang. The "National Security" here is adjacent to the hotel from east to west, only separated by Qingshuitang Road. If it weren't for the sprained ankle, this would be a "national security" that I wouldn't miss.

Around Pozi Street. There are many milk tea shops. It can be seen that young people love to visit here.

Taiping Street is the most complete street in the ancient city of Changsha that retains the original street pattern.

Jia Yi's former residence is located on Taiping Street. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public due to the demolition project of the adjacent building. Jia Yi's former residence was built during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. It was the residence of Jia Yi, the king of Changsha. From 177 BC to 174 BC, Jia Yi, a famous political commentator, thinker and litterateur of the Western Han Dynasty, lived here and was then the Taifu of King Changsha.

The former site of Hunan Provincial No. 1 Normal School, the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council on May 25, 2006, is an important historical site and representative building category in modern times. The era is the Republic of China. Its predecessor was Chengnan Academy founded by Zhang Wei, a Neo-Confucian scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty. Hunan Normal School was established in 1903 and enjoys the reputation of "a thousand-year-old school and a century-old normal school." In 1911, after the school site was relocated to the former site of "Chengnan Academy" in Shushuping, Changsha, it was renamed "Hunan Provincial First Normal School". From the spring of 1913 to the summer of 1918, Mao Zedong studied in Class 8 of the school. He Shuheng, Cai Hesen, Li Weihan, Xu Teli, Xia Xi, Xiao San, Ren Bishi, Liao Mosha, Zhou Gucheng, etc. all studied or worked in school.

It is still a school, but you can visit it for free.

Driving from Changsha City to Jinggang Town is about 40 kilometers, and most of the sections are close to the Xiangjiang River.

Jinggang Town, Wangcheng District, Changsha City, is the fourth batch of famous historical and cultural towns in China. Li Jing, a general of the Tang Dynasty, once stationed troops here. Because he managed the army well and never harassed the people, later generations renamed the place Jinggang. Zeng Guofan first graduated in Jinggang, where he suffered a disastrous defeat. There are tourist spots in Jinggang Town that collect tickets, and you can enjoy free tickets when visiting the old streets.

Hunan Province Museum is the first batch of national-level museums and one of the eight national-level key museums jointly built by the central and local governments. From 1972 to 1974, the excavation of the Han Tomb in Mawangdui was of great significance to the development of the Hunan Province Museum. The discovery and excavation of thousands of exquisite cultural relics and well-preserved female corpses of the Han Dynasty have made the Hunan Province Museum the focus of world attention.

Stay at Hengshan Shenlong Yingjia Hotel, which is listed as a four-star, superior double room, 283 yuan (including double breakfast). Hengshan County is about 15 kilometers away from Nanyue Hengshan Scenic Area. Hengshan County is named after Hengshan, but Hengshan Scenic Area does not belong to Hengshan County, but is listed as Nanyue District. This store is the best hotel in Hengshan County, with very warm service and free laundry. We returned to the guest room after dinner and found that the soaked dirty clothes were missing. It turned out that the waiter took the initiative to wash them off. The hotel's Chinese restaurant is good and affordable. Free midnight snacks are also provided in the evening, which is a rare service in star-rated hotels. However, there is still room for improvement in guest room hygiene. In addition, the hotel faces the street and it is a bit noisy when large cars pass by.
