Chengdu, Sichuan, China is located in the Western Sichuan Basin, with crisscross river networks and rich products. It has enjoyed the reputation of "the land of abundance" since ancient times. As the birthplace of ancient Shu civilization, it is one of the top ten ancient capitals in China. On September 1, 1952, after the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China abolished various administrative offices and restored the organizational structure of Sichuan Province, the People's Government of Sichuan Province was established in Chengdu, and Chengdu naturally became the capital city of Sichuan.

The reporter has traveled to Chengdu many times, but what I want to mention most here is my two trips to Chengdu Dujiangyan in 1990 and 2021, 31 years later. I remember when I first came to Chengdu in June 1990. At that time, I stopped in Chengdu on my way to Luzhou in order to thank Laojiao Winery in Luzhou, Sichuan for its strong support for the recording of a group of songs for the 11th Asian Games including "Asian Heroes". On the morning of June 30, my colleague Li Ping and I took the green skin express seven times. After a long journey of two nights a day and more than 30 hours, we finally successfully arrived in Chengdu from Beijing.

Taking a photo with Xiang Shijian (Photo: Li Ping)

When we walked out of Chengdu Railway Station and arrived at the station entrance, we immediately saw a young man wearing a green T-shirt holding a white plexiglass sign with red lettering "China People's Radio, China Radio International". It turned out that he was Comrade Xiang Shijian from the Sichuan Reporter Station of CCTV.

Photo taken at Chengdu Railway Station (Photo: Li Ping)

Due to the delay of the train, Xiang Shijian had come to the station many times and finally made a special trip to pick us up. Xiao Xiang's incomparable enthusiasm made us immediately feel at home. Although I have just arrived in this place, I seem to have gotten rid of the unfamiliar pressure of first arriving in a different place and feel much more at ease.

Photo taken at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport (Photo: Xiang Shijian)

Xiao Xiang drove Santana and in the blink of an eye took us to the Red Star Hotel of the Chengdu Military Region, which is located diagonally opposite the CCTV reporter station. Everything went so well. After arranging accommodation, Xiao Xiang took us to Sichuan Province Airlines and bought a ticket from Chengdu to Luzhou at 09:30 a.m. on July 2. I didn't expect that the ticket was only 65 yuan at that time. It was really cheap.

Xiang Shijian not only handled things quickly, but also knew people familiar with the situation. After completing the major event of air tickets for the next trip, he drove the reporters and his party to Chengdu in one morning and sent us to three national key cultural relics attractions such as Du Fu Cottage, Wuhou Temple, and Wenshu Temple.

Photo taken by Du Fu's Cottage (Photo: Li Ping)

Du Fu Cottage is located on the bank of Huanhua River in the western suburbs of Chengdu. The environment here is extremely elegant, with an antique garden-style courtyard. It is really a grass pavilion left behind for future generations, and the poet saint embodies the poetic and picturesque meaning of thousands of years, which makes people forget to leave. Wuhou Temple is an ancestral hall to commemorate Zhuge Kong Ming during the Three Kingdoms Period. There are lifelike civil and military officials and generals from the Three Kingdoms Period. Liu Bei's tomb is also in the Wuhou Temple. So far, although I have traveled across places for a short period of time, I have a deep memory.

At noon, we came to the CCTV reporter station to meet with Comrade Tan Dexiang, then station master, and introduced him to our Sichuan trip. After arrangement by Station Chief Tan, Xiao Xiang was asked to take us to lunch first. After that, you can visit Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain Tourist Areas in Guanxian County.

Photo taken at Wenshu Courtyard in Chengdu (Photo: Li Ping)

Coming out of the reporter's station, Xiao Xiang took us to a very famous dragon wonton restaurant that gathers famous snacks in Chengdu, and enjoyed a snack set meal that was enough to make people feel overwhelmed. I remember that at that time, the snack set meal was only eight yuan per serving, with small plates and small bowls, exquisite and unique. There were about ten kinds of dragon rice dumplings, dan dan noodles, glutinous rice balls, white fungus soup, xiaolongbao, steamed wheat, spicy dried tofu, spicy tofu slices, spicy beef strips, egg dough cakes, etc.

Chengdu Long Dunshou Restaurant (file photo)

Although we have tasted more than ten snacks, Xiao Xiang said that we still haven't completely tasted all the snacks, such as the famous couple's lung slices, fried quail, etc. It seems that eating in Sichuan really deserves its reputation. I forced myself to eat all kinds of snacks, but in the end, I actually felt uncomfortable. It seemed that no matter how delicious the food was, I had to be restrained.

Photo taken in Dujiangyan (Photo: Li Ping)

After lunch, Xiaoxiang drove us to Dujiangyan, which is more than 50 kilometers away from Chengdu. The car drove all the way to the mountain. Looking down the mountain, I can see the majestic Dujiangyan project landscape in my mind. I can see the fish-mouth-shaped diversion dam. The vast rapids from west to east are divided into two rivers inside and outside.

Photo taken at Erwang Temple (Photo: Li Ping)

Following the guidance of the small direction, we crossed the Erwang Temple on the mountainside from the mountain and began to walk down the mountain. The Erwang Temple was built for the responsibility of Li Bin, a famous ancient hydrologist who built the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. The temples are located among the trees on the mountainside next to mountains and rivers. They are very spectacular.

Photo taken on the bank of Minjiang River (Photo: Li Ping)

This temple commemorates Li Bing, the builder of Dujiangyan in China and the prefect of Qin Shu Prefecture, and his son Erlang, is located at the foot of Yulei Mountain on the east bank of the Minjiang River in Dujiangyan. It was originally built in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, but the existing buildings were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. It was originally named Chongde Temple. After the Song Dynasty, Li Bing and his son were named kings. After the Qing Dynasty, the name was changed to its current name.

Photo taken in Lidui Park (Photo: Li Ping)

The stone wall in the temple is embedded with Li Bing and his descendants 'motto on water control: deep scouring beaches, low weir, etc., which is called the Three-Character Sutra of Water Control. There are statues of Li Bing and Erlang in the temple. The tea house on the east side of the main hall is a suspended building on the cliff, where visitors can rest and drink tea. On the right side of the back hall are steles by painters Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong and others. The garden is full of various precious flowers and trees. The ancient trees reach the sky and the trees cover the sun. It is a tourist attraction in Sichuan.

Photo taken in front of the Anlan Cable Bridge (Photo: Li Ping)

After going down the mountain from Erwang Temple, when we came to a closer look at the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project, we saw an Anlan Iron Chain Bridge divided into two sections on the two inner and outer rivers. Walking on the bridge and looking down, the rapids and rivers under the bridge were like galloping horses, roaring past, raising waves of white waves.

Photo taken on the dam (Photo: Li Ping)

We followed the directions of the small direction, followed the diverted Neijiang River, and headed east towards Lidui Park. Here we walked onto a long river-protecting embankment with large pebbles wrapped in bamboo fences. We saw the river water coming out of the stone cracks, and a thin layer of river water was spread on the embankment road.

Photo taken at the mouth of the treasure bottle (Photo: Li Ping)

Walking on it, the river will drown your feet. I heard that this is because there have been a few heavy rains not long ago and the water overflowed. If the water is too heavy, the Lianjiang Road here cannot be walked on. We had no choice but to take off our shoes and socks and walk into the water. Fortunately, it was only a short journey to the entrance of Lidui Park.

Photo taken on Qingcheng Mountain (Photo: Li Ping)

After passing through this park, Xiaoxiang's car had just arrived. After picking us up, we went to Qingcheng Mountain. Shortly after entering the mountain gate of Qingcheng Mountain, I saw a group of fellow villagers carrying sliding poles seeking business up the mountain. We climbed up the stairs along the stone plank road. After a while, we found that the trees were still towering in the mountains and were far away from the nearest scenic spot we wanted to visit. However, due to time, we had to return in a hurry. In this way, on June 30, 1990, thanks to Comrade Xiang Shijian's enthusiastic help, we visited four famous scenic spots in Chengdu and Dujiangyan in one day. To this day, the first trip to Dujiangyan, Chengdu, Sichuan, is still fresh in my mind.

The reporter's second trip to Chengdu Dujiangyan was 31 years later on June 21, 2021. Due to participating in the "Green China Tour Entering Beautiful Dujiangyan" activity, he flew from Beijing to Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and drove on the highway to Dujiangyan. On the way, I felt particularly cordial when I saw the banner "Welcome to Dujiangyan". After more than an hour's drive, I successfully arrived in the beautiful Dujiangyan at 17:30 pm and stayed at the Xinhao Holiday Inn on the bank of the Minjiang River.

Li Bing Memorial Hall (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Since it was already evening, everyone was arranged to have free activities. I heard that the beautiful Minjiang River passes through the city and is a beautiful scenery here in Dujiangyan, so I walked out of the hotel after dinner and wandered around. Not far from a stroll is Dujiangyan Water Culture Square. This is where the Li Bing Memorial Hall lies.

There is also a cute giant panda lying on the lawn in the square under Close View Culture. Passers-by took pictures with it. Standing here, overlooking the endless mountains. The location where there is a tower on the mountain is the Erwang Temple of Li Bing and his son. It reminds me of my experience visiting Erwang Temple 31 years ago.

Although I came to Dujiangyan for the second time, the impression of coming here back then has disappeared. Dujiangyan is named after the world-famous ancient water conservancy project. For the first time here, I have visited attractions such as Erwang Temple, Lidui Park and Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. Everything in Dujiangyan's view today feels new and unfamiliar.

Corner of Dujiangyan (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Wandering in Dujiangyan, you can see the beautiful scenery along the river where the tributaries of the Minjiang River enter here. There are many scenic spots and historic sites such as Xuanhuamen, the ancient city of Guanxian County, and Tianfuyuan. Dujiangyan was once called Guanxian County. The ancient city of Guanxian County, known as the "mountains and rivers enter the Huaihe River and the dojo of life", attracts visitors from all directions with its rich cultural heritage, unique customs and romantic atmosphere. The ancient city of Guanxian County is an ancient city accompanied by a thousand-year-old weir, an ancient city integrated with the scenery and city, an ancient city that tastes life, and an ancient city directly connected to the express railway. The main attractions here are Nanqiao, West Street, Confucian Temple, Water Conservancy Mansion, Yangliu River, etc.

The overall construction of the ancient city of Guanxian County has been implemented since the end of 2009. The interface buildings are all built in accordance with the styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in western Sichuan. At the same time, water is diverted into the city, winding around, and you are in it, as if you have achieved a historical journey, and the modern troubles and noise are also dispelled at the same time. At night, the ancient city lights up together with Yulei Pavilion and mountain pavilions, adding another view to the beautiful ancient city rebuilt after the disaster.

Xuanhua Gate, Ancient City of Guanxian County (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Walking into the ancient city, people can see the historic Xuanhua Gate. The east gate of Dujiangyan is named "Xuanhua Gate". The original site is at the intersection of today's Xingfu Road and Jianshe Road, which is the site of today's newly built gate. The tower above the gate is the "Provincial Geng Building". The east gate of Guan County is the busiest gate in the county. The east street inside the gate is today's Xingfu Road and the most prosperous street in the county. The word Xuanhua means "spread the monarch's orders and educate the people."

Dujiangyan is not just a Dujiangyan water conservancy project. The ancient city of Guanxian also has many places worth visiting. On the way to the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, people can see the beautiful south bridge. Various color paintings, carved beams and painted buildings, folk color sculptures, and couplets of calligraphy and painting are integrated into one. It is known as the "Water Painting Building", the "First Bridge in Xiongju Jiangyuan" and the "Scenic Victory Platform." Especially visiting Nanqiao at night and looking at the dimly lit night view of the ancient city, it has a unique flavor.

Climb a covered bridge with carved beams and painted buildings from under the ancient city wall. This bridge, also known as Yangtianwojie Sluice, is the first important water conservancy facility on the Neijiang River in Dujiangyan to regulate and divert water. The Yangtianwojie Sluice was built in the winter of 1963 and is divided into 6 holes in total, 3 holes in the Pubai River Main Canal and 3 holes in the Zhoujiang River Main Canal. Each hole has a net width of 9 meters. It is opened and closed by single-track electric driving vehicles. Yangtianwojie sluice spans the main canal of the Neijiang River, echoing the mountainous city of Dujiangyan. It controls the Neijiang River and benefits Tianfu. It is known as the first sluice in Xishu.

The Yangtianwo Covered Bridge and the Yangtianwo Sluice are close to each other. The covered bridge adopts the Ming and Qing architectural style, with blue bricks and black tiles, carved window lattices, and the eaves of the bridge pavilion at both ends and in the middle. It is decorated in an antique and majestic manner. Famous calligraphy and paintings, poems, and couplets are also arranged in the covered bridge, making the entire covered bridge full of a strong cultural atmosphere. On the bridge pavilion in the middle of the covered bridge hangs the "Tianfuyuan" plaque written in calligraphy by Mr. Guo Moruo.

Tourists and pedestrians can stroll leisurely on the covered bridge, or take a nap in the bridge pavilion to enjoy the scenery and cool off. They can also go to the covered bridge Tea House above the covered bridge to sip tea and chat. Below the covered bridge is the mouth of the fish nest facing the sky, and there is a stone ladder in the middle of the covered bridge to get down. There are white marble railings standing on the edge of the Yuzui embankment. On the left side of Yuzui is the main canal of the Pubai River, and on the right is the main canal of the Zujiang River. The main canal of the Pubai River branches into the Puyang River and the Baitiao River through the Pubai Gate, and the main canal of the Zoujiang River branches into the Zouma River and the Jiang 'an River through the Zoujiang Gate.

Arriving at Yangtianwo Square, there is a landscape of "China's Best Tourist City" in the center of the square. The square one is in the center of the stage, and there is a golden ball held above it like a torch. The whole shape is resplendent. Not far from the roadside is a Dujiangyan County Governor's Mansion.

County Chief Mansion (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Climbing the Junwang Mansion Building, you can see the mountains and clouds in a panoramic view. A spring water flows slowly through a river, and a piano tune of high mountains and flowing water gently floats in, still entering the realm of Chang'e. Especially on the riverside where the breeze blows slowly, I also practiced a set of "Eight Duan Brocade" and felt very comfortable.

On the morning of June 22, 2021, the reporter started from the hotel where he stayed to participate in the "Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China-Green China Tour and Entering Beautiful Dujiangyan Large-scale Charity Event." After the grand opening ceremony, a large-scale TV series of talk shows "Ten People Talk about Changes on the Road to Two Mountains-Dujiangyan" was jointly broadcast live by People's Daily Online and China Green China Network. After that, the participants came to the foot of Qingcheng Mountain to carry out commemorative forest tree planting activities.

For Qingcheng Mountain, this is the second time that reporters have visited it. It is the holy land of Taoist Tianshi Taoism in the world, one of the top ten caves, one of the four major Taoist mountains in China, one of the five major immortal mountains, and the birthplace of Chinese Taoism. Because the mountains are lush with lush trees and evergreen all year round, they have always enjoyed the reputation of "the tranquility of Qingcheng in the world". The Taoist palace architecture is a concrete practice of the Taoist idea of "harmony between man and nature". Starting from the perspective of "Tao and nature", the buildings of Qingcheng Mountain are all based on the mountains, flexibly layout, and work hard on concealment, hiding, tranquility and wonder. The cultural landscape and the natural landscape complement each other. The whole mountain is surrounded by peaks, shaped like a city, with thousands of steps of red ladders and winding paths leading to the secluded scenery. It wins with its tranquility and purity, and is as famous as the dangers of Jianmen, the beauty of Emei, and the majesty of Kimen.

It is a pity that although the reporter did not visit Qingcheng Mountain in detail last time, this time the reporter participated in the "Green China Tour Entering Dujiangyan" event and did not visit Qingcheng Mountain twice due to time constraints. However, both activities were held in Qingcheng Mountain in Dujiangyan. One time was at the Qingcheng Mountain B & B College at the foot of the mountain to interview Dean Xiao Hua about the culture of the Qingcheng Mountain Sitting and Forgetting Taoist Experience Area.

Another activity is to walk into the Zuowang Forest Hotel in Qingcheng Mountain, a place like a fairyland for spiritual cultivation. Here, I saw some people copying a "Heart Sutra" here, and the copying process took more than 40 minutes. This scene left an unforgettable and profound memory.

In addition, the reporter also followed the beautiful Dujiangyan wind gathering group and came to the pigsty coffee garden located in the western Sichuan Music Forest of Dujiangyan. Listen to the founder, Mr. Song Jianming, an unpretentious peasant brother, talk about the creation and development process here. His unique and tortuous experience is very beneficial.

That evening, a wonderful "Green China Journey into Beautiful Dujiangyan Large-scale Public Welfare Performance" event was also held at the Dujiangyan Olympic Sports School Stadium. The six leading figures, Liu Jin, Lu Qi, Wang Wufu, Che Yuzheng, Zhang Zaixin and Huang Hong, gathered in Dujiangyan to tell the story of the Long March and promote the red spirit; Cheng Zhi, Liu Dongdong, Li Mi, Yun Duo, Gan Ping, Huang Yan, Jin Yu, Sheng Xi, Hailai Amu, Li Qiongyao, Shanshui Group and many other green Chinese literary and artistic light cavalry gave the party a climax and the scene was very lively.

On June 23, the reporter walked into the Dujiangyan Wind Collection Group with the Green China Tour and visited the Lidui Park in the Dujiangyan Scenic Area for the second time. During this period, the reporter carefully searched the memories of his first visit here in 31 years, but he couldn't remember anything except Baopingkou and Anlan Cable Bridge...

Photo taken during the second tour of Dujiangyan (Photo: Jia Jianxin)

When I came to Lidui Park again, I saw the couplet at the gate of the park: "After completing the divine Yu axe and vertebral skills, the land and sea are unparalleled, the great book of the river and canal is Qin Shouhui; take over the beautiful waters of Shushan Mountain, guide the river first, and the famous garden is colorful and beautiful." The first couplet said that Tianfu, known as the "Six Seas", is unparalleled in the world thanks to Prefect Li Bing, who took over the divine axe and immortal vertebra of Dayu and completed the great Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project; the second couplet said that it has the top responsibility for the famous mountains and rivers in Sichuan, and Dujiangyan City ranks first. This Lidui Park is one of the highlights.

Walking into Lidui Park (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Walking into the park, you will see the inner pavilions and pavilions in your vision, with ancient wooden piles, strange flowers, and pools and fountains. The layout is exquisite and unique. There are crape myrtle vases and crape myrtle screens in the garden. They were cultivated for two to three hundred years and are unique. This ancient ginkgo pile head is said to have been planted by Zhang Song in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. It is still slim and luxuriant, like a crane, holding the aura of the mountains and rivers here. It is said that it has also borne fruit. Crape myrtle vases, crape myrtle screens and ginkgo piles are known as the "Three Treasures in the Garden".

Fulong Temple in Dujiangyan (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

When you come to Fulongguan, you can see a 42-step hill, called Lidui. It was carved by Li Bing and his son who led the working people to open the Baopingkou and divert Minjiang River water to irrigate the western Sichuan Plain. Isolated pile separated from the jade pile. The "Lidui" stone tablets and "Buddhist Sanskrit tablets" on both sides were erected by later generations, with the intention of using divine power to prevent water disasters forever.

Guanlan Pavilion (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Fulong Temple, formerly known as Fan Xian Hall, was built in the Jin Dynasty to commemorate Fan Changsheng, a wise man during the Three Kingdoms period. Fan Changsheng was a native of Fuling, Sichuan. It is said that he obtained the art of longevity. He was over 130 years old. He was knowledgeable and talented. Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang asked him to be an official, but he refused to go many times. He wanted to become an immortal. People at that time called him "Xiao Yao Gong". In the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty, the people missed Li Bing's achievements and expanded the temple. Following the legend of Li Bing and his son "descending the dragon to control the water", it was renamed Fulong Temple. The viewing pavilion at Fulongguan is the best location to view the entire Dujiangyan Canal project.

Looking from the distance from the Yuzui Dike (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Arriving at the Yuzui Dividing Dike, from a distance, you can see the water of the Minjiang River rising from the sky. It originates from Gonggang Ridge in Songpan County, flows through Mao County, Wenchuan, Dujiangyan, Leshan and other places, and joins the Jinsha River in Yibin City, called the Yangtze River. It has a total length of 735 kilometers and an average annual flow of 496 seconds cubic meters. It is precisely because it is rich in water. It surges from the upper reaches of the mountains and canyons to here. It faces the gradually lowering fan-shaped Western Sichuan Plain. There is no constraint and serious flooding occurs during the flood period. Until the engineering masterpiece of Li Bing and his son cured the flood.

Treasure Bottle Mouth at the foot of Li Dui (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

The Baopingkou is located at the foot of Lidui and is the throat of the Neijiang River. It is a hole dug by Li Bing that year with a width of 20 meters, a height of 40 meters and a length of 80 meters. It is shaped like a bottleneck, so it is called "Baopingkou". The water from the Neijiang River rushed here and was lifted head-on by the left pile, forming stagnant water and swirling flow, making the water clearer, and then entering the water. During the flood period, the Neijiang River was forced not to flood into the narrow Baopingkou in large quantities. It had to flow back with the swirling current and drain from the Feisha Weir to the outer river, serving as a control gate and ensuring the safety of the Chengdu Plain.

Photo taken at the Second Tour of Baopingkou (Photo: Jia Jianxin)

Baopingkou serves as a "control gate" and can automatically control the amount of water entering the Inner River. It is a hole cut on the long ridge of Jianshan Mountain (now known as Guankou Mountain and Yulei Mountain) that stretches out to the Minjiang River. It is artificially carved and controls the throat of water entering the Inner River. It is named Baopingkou because it looks like a bottle mouth and has a unique function. Due to the magnificent natural landscape of Baopingkou, it is known as the "Liduisuo Gorge" and is one of the famous "Ten Scenes of Guanyang" in history.

Anlan Cable Bridge (Photo: Feng Ganyong)

Anlan Cable Bridge is also known as "Anlan Bridge" and "Couple Bridge". Located above the fish mouth of Dujiangyan and spanning the two rivers inside and outside, it is known as the "Five Great Bridges in Ancient China" and is the most characteristic landscape of Dujiangyan. It was built before the Song Dynasty and was destroyed by war in the late Ming Dynasty (17th century AD). The ancient name "Zhupu Bridge" was changed to "Pingshi Bridge" in the first year of Chunhua of the Song Dynasty, and the new bridge built in Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty was renamed "Anlan Bridge". The original cable bridge is supported by wooden rafts and stone piers, with thick bamboo cables hanging across the river surface, wooden boards are laid on the deck, and bamboo cables are used as fences on both sides. The total length is about 500 meters. The bridge is made of steel cable concrete piles.

2021.6.23 In the afternoon, the reporter successfully concluded his trip to Dujiangyan and returned to Beijing on China Southern Airlines Flight CZ8812 from Chengdu Shuangliu Airport. While waiting for the plane at the airport, the reporter fantasized. Although the two tours of Dujiangyan were 31 years apart, the two different experiences were both unforgettable. Perhaps this is the charm of tourism. (Photo and text: Feng Ganyong)
