In the previously released "Red Three Rocks: The City Light of Chongqing", we said, "A hasty rough outline is far from enough to showcase the weight carried by Chongqing on this red land, and the great and tenacious revolutionary spirit of Red Rock
Pen tip is a way of commemoration, while walking is another way.
In the previous article (Red Three Rock Panoramic Guide (Part 1): Appreciating the Most Precious Urban Spirit), the Zhongshan Fourth Road - Grand Hall - Datianwan - Cultural Palace area is connected and interdependent like clusters of flowers and brocade. In this article, the two areas of Hongyanzui - Hutouyan - Hualong Lake, Liziba - Eling - Fotuguan - International Village are scattered like jade beads, but fortunately, the ridge axis mainly composed of half mountain cliff trails perfectly connects these mountains and rivers with cultural landscapes. We walked 21 kilometers from paper to reality, exploring the overall tourism experience of this red Three Rock route for everyone. Along the way, multiple mountain city balcony observation platforms are available for tourists to admire this picturesque city.
If you have time, both out of town tourists and local residents can take a trip and it will definitely be worthwhile. If you are a city hiking enthusiast, then this route is definitely a must take. Tourists who drive or take public transportation also have more comfortable ways of sightseeing.
Without further ado, this strategy has more core walking points and longer routes, with a detailed 21 kilometer journey.
This route has the following main nodes: Hongyan Village - Hutouyan Park - Former site of Xinhua Daily Headquarters - Dahua Trail - Liziba Observation Deck - Liziba Anti Japanese War Site Park - San Lou Ma Road - Er Chang Cultural and Creative Park - E Ling Park - Chongqing Tiandi. Hongyan Village and E Ling Public Park can be connected at the beginning and end, adjusted according to personal time and geographical location.
Our trip starts from Hongyan Village, so the narrative order of this article follows this. At the same time, we will also appropriately incorporate tourism strategies starting from other places in the article for your reference.
Exploring the Light of Chongqing City
Time: 9:00 AM
Route: Hongyan Village → Former Site of Xinhua Daily Headquarters in Hutouyan → Dahua Trail
In early spring, the sun is full of vitality, which is the best time to explore the most authentic spirit of a city. So, on this morning, for the walking of the Red Three Rock Line, we will start from Hongyan Village.
Hongyan Village shines with the light of the city.
01 Hongyan Village: Hongyan Revolution Memorial HallWe have set Hongyan Village and Hongyan Revolution Memorial Hall as the starting station of the Red Three Rock Line (of course, you can also use this as the ending station), with a special purpose. Hongyan Village was originally called Hongyanzui and was the location of Ms. Rao Guomo's large farm.
In early May 1939, during the Japanese bombing, No. 70 Computer Room Street, where the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China was located, was destroyed. Through the underground party in eastern Sichuan, Zhou Enlai contacted Ms. Rao Guomo and, with her consent, relocated the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China to Dayou Farm.
Hongyan Village also became the most important office location for the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Chongqing Office of the Eighth Route Army at that time.
From 1939 to 1946, older generation revolutionaries such as Zhou Enlai, Dong Biwu, Ye Jianying, Wang Ruofei, Qin Bangxian, and Deng Yingchao lived and fought here.
During the 1945 Chongqing negotiations, Chairman Mao Zedong stayed in Chongqing for 43 days. During these days, except for three days when he was invited by Chiang Kai shek to live in Shandonglin Garden, Mao Zedong lived in Hongyan Village for the remaining 40 days.
"Hongyan Village became the command center of the CPC in the Kuomintang controlled area and the mainstay of the anti Japanese national united front during the Anti Japanese War. At that time, the people in the rear area affectionately referred to Hongyan Village as the "Fog City Bright Lamp" and the "Small Liberated Area of the Nationalist controlled Zone".
In May 1946, the Nationalist Government moved eastward to Nanjing. Zhou Enlai and Dong Biwu led the Communist Party delegation, Southern Bureau, and office staff to leave Chongqing and move to Nanjing one after another.
Before leaving, Dong Biwu wrote the four words "Dayou Farm" for Ms. Rao Guomo, and also wrote the seven character quatrain "In memory of the glorious deeds and life stories that happened here:" After eight years of success in the rear, the Red Rock supported the few who were worried. The elegant residence is surrounded by gardens and forests, and visitors are busy planting flowers and bamboo.
The Red Rock Revolution Memorial Hall was established here in 1955 and opened to the public on May 1, 1958. In 1959, Dong Biwu inscribed the name of the museum. In 1961, the State Council announced it as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
The great achievements and red rock spirit cultivated by the older generation of revolutionaries here have also made this red land famous both at home and abroad, becoming a famous revolutionary holy land and a national patriotic education base.
The Red Rock Revolution Memorial Hall has four floors and exhibits the "Qianqiu Red Rock - History and Cultural Relics Exhibition of the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee". The museum has a rich collection of items, which is worth taking a closer look at. Let's select a few places to briefly introduce.
The printing press of Xinhua Daily is a precious collection in the museum. Measuring 224 centimeters in length, 154 centimeters in width, and 153 centimeters in height, weighing approximately 1 ton, it was imported from Germany and equipped with Siemens motors. Many articles that had a significant impact on public opinion at the time were printed from it, making it a sharp sword.
The secret radio station display in the museum is innovative. The sound of Didi's emission and the scene of tables and chairs make people feel like they are transported back to that turbulent era. The letters written by the older generation of revolutionaries and patriots in the exhibition hall, as well as the clothes they wear, make people exchange time and space, as if seeing their figures rushing for revolution.
02 Hongyan Village: Explore Hongyan in the dense forestLeaving the Red Rock Revolution Memorial Hall, you can take a slow walk to various old sites within the Red Rock Village Park for sightseeing. In the park, there are a series of buildings and facilities at that time, such as the old site of Dayou Farm memorial archway, the former residence of Rao Guomo, the former site of the Southern Bureau, the former site of the auditorium, the former site of the nursery, the former site of the basketball court, etc., which are safely located in the mountain col.
The most important building in Hongyan Village should be the former office building of the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Eighth Route Army in Chongqing. The entire building is a civil through bucket structure, with two floors and one floor, covering an area of 800 square meters and 54 rooms of various sizes, located on the northwest slope of the "Dayou Farm".
The bottom layer here is the public office of the Eighth Route Army stationed in Chongqing (the New Fourth Army stationed in Chongqing also worked here before the Wannan Incident); The second floor is the office and bedroom of the Communist Party's secret agency, the Southern Bureau, and its leaders. Zhou Enlai's office and bedroom are the places where the responsible comrades of the Southern Bureau often hold meetings and make major decisions; The largest room on the second floor is the library of the Southern Bureau and Office; The third floor is the confidential department and secret radio station of the Southern Bureau and Office, mainly responsible for communication with relevant radio stations in Yan'an and other regions, as well as the transmission of confidential documents.
It can be imagined how many profound instructions that influenced the Chinese revolution were sent to the whole country and even the world in this building, and how many events that guided the direction of the revolution occurred here.
The park is surrounded by towering green trees, creating a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The mountains below and within are like two different worlds. This is not only an important revolutionary site, but also a great place to stroll slowly. There are red flowers dotted with flowing water next to the Red Rock Revolution Cemetery. If there are occasional people from high places who accidentally enter your ears, it is mostly pedestrians from the halfway up mountain cliff trail.
If you come to the park in spring like us, the Red Rock Cherry Blossom Garden behind the former site of the Southern Bureau is also worth a visit. In 1979, former Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka presented a batch of precious Japanese cherry blossoms to Comrade Deng Yingchao as a gesture of friendship between China and Japan and in memory of Premier Zhou Enlai. Deng Yingchao transferred 78 of them to the Red Rock Revolution Memorial Hall, which later became this garden.
In 1942, Deng Yingchao, then a member of the Southern Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Secretary of the Women's Committee, started a daycare center in Hongyan Village while carrying out revolutionary work. Zhou Enlai said, "Children are descendants of the revolution, treasures of our country, and our successors. Everyone should care about them." He also mobilized staff to make various toys for children. The spirit of Hongyan and the revolutionary cause need to be passed down by future generations.
We would like Comrade Deng Yingchao to transfer 78 cherry blossoms to the Red Rock Revolution Memorial Hall, which has profound significance. Here, we commemorate and reminisce about those difficult times, and never forget those people and things. The smoke of gunpowder fades away, and the cherry blossoms bloom in the spring sunshine. May the tree of peace remain evergreen and the flower of peace bloom forever.

03 Former Site of Xinhua Daily Headquarters: Xinhua Front ArmyFrom Hongyan Village, you can take a taxi or other transportation to Hutouyan Park. The former headquarters of Xinhua Daily is located at No. 86 Hutoyan Village, Hualongqiao, Yuzhong District. It is one of the core attractions of the Red Three Rock Line.
During the negotiations in Chongqing, Comrade Mao Zedong praised the brave journalists of the Xinhua Daily who fought bravely under the Tiger Head Rock as the "Xinhua Front Army" except for the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army.
This is because the Xinhua Daily and the People's Weekly published by the Xinhua Daily are the only large-scale political organ newspapers published and distributed by the CPC in the Kuomintang ruled areas in the early days of the War of Resistance against Japan and the Liberation War. It has made important contributions in exposing and criticizing the true face of the Kuomintang, consolidating the anti Japanese national united front, and winning international public opinion support.
This newspaper was prepared in Nanjing at the end of 1937, and was founded in Wuhan in January 1938. In October of the same year, Wuhan fell and the newspaper moved to Chongqing. By the time the newspaper was shut down by the Kuomintang in February 1947, Xinhua Daily had been running for 9 years.
Over the course of 9 years, the headquarters of Xinhua Daily remained in Hutouyan for seven and a half years, publishing and distributing more than 2700 issues of Xinhua Daily. They used written struggle to maintain unity, and Chongqing became the center of public opinion in the south.
For example, after the Wannan Incident in 1941, Zhou Enlai published in this newspaper the famous line he wrote in Hongyan Village: "An eternal injustice, a single leaf in Jiangnan; why rush to fight against each other?!", shouting out to the whole society.
Every time the Kuomintang deviates from the direction of the joint resistance war, the Southern Bureau will use the Xinhua Daily to mobilize public opinion for strong condemnation. Chiang Kai shek, who claims to be the 'supreme commander of the resistance war', dare not go further on the path of 'actively opposing communism and passively resisting Japan', "said a staff member of the Hongyan Revolutionary Memorial Hall. It was precisely because the Southern Bureau endured humiliation and carried out negotiations and mediation that the situation of the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party was maintained until the final victory of the resistance war, and the historical contribution of Hutouyan cannot be erased.
Standing on the observation deck at the intersection of Shiyou Road, we can see several gray walled houses in the mountain valley from a distance, which are where the old site is located. Due to the closure and exhibition of the former site of Xinhua Daily Headquarters, we are temporarily unable to visit.
As far as we know, the former site of the main museum is being transformed into the "Xinhua Daily Historical Exhibition Hall", and the cultural relics will be comprehensively repaired and upgraded before being restored for display. The adjacent Hualongqiao Park has been developed into a comprehensive park focused on leisure, culture, fitness, and entertainment.
We can imagine that the mountain landscape perfectly combines with the red spirit here, and once completed, it will definitely be another must visit destination.
Travel Tips
The surrounding area of the former headquarters of Xinhua Daily is under construction and has not yet been opened.
Public transportation: You can reach the Petroleum Intersection Station at 139, 471, 837, 418, etc. Part of the projects in Hutouyan Park are under construction, and there is currently no parking lot available. You can choose to find parking spaces in the surrounding area for parking.
04 Dahua Trail: Winding and undulating on the mountain ridgeHutouyan Park is located on the entire half mountain cliff trail. The main trail from Hutouyan to Fotuguan was first opened in 2021. The entire half mountain cliff trail is about 28 kilometers long, with a main line of 9.1 kilometers, starting from Fotuguan Park in the east and ending behind Hongyan Village in the west. If you are a city hiking enthusiast, this route is rare.
Stepping onto the Dahua section of the Half Mountain Cliff Trail, you will find a unique feature of this route: multiple elevated boardwalks that spiral along the curves of the mountain. The trail is wide and paved with hollow anti slip steel grilles, making it easy to walk and even for three to five people to easily avoid slipping.
Continuing forward, with ups and downs, stepping on the gentle breeze, the journey is smooth and unobstructed. There are many pedestrians on the trail, and everyone is excited. If you are tired and rest on the benches on the road, you can overlook the Jialing River.
When you arrive at the Buddha's Night Rain Stone Carving Station, you can overlook the Jiahua Bridge from the suspended observation point, where vehicles flow endlessly and the Jialin River surges forward. The dense forest on the right blends with the mountain scenery, and Line 2 of the railway is drawing a beautiful arc, retreating towards the distance.
This is the 'train to spring'.
If you walk towards the core area of Fotu Guan Park, you will find yourself in the midst of deep mountains and dense forests, with stone cliffs hanging like sharp blades to the side, tree roots up to ten meters long hanging along the walls, and the sound of birds chirping from time to time. You will shuttle freely like a swimming snake.

Here is the best Chongqing lunch
Time: AM13:00-PM15:00
After a morning's walk, what I need to reward myself the most is delicious food. At the end of this line in the morning, there is the most Chongqing cuisine.
From Fotuguan Park, you can take a bus or taxi to Liziba, where there are plenty of delicious food waiting for you.
01 Liziba Liangshan Chicken: a popular Chongqing internet celebrity store loved by touristsAs the name suggests, Liziba Liangshan Chicken is located in Liziba. On the Internet, Liziba Liangshan Chicken has many good reputations, such as "KFC in the United States and Liangshan Chicken in China", "having never eaten Liangshan Chicken is equal to having never been to Chongqing, and having never eaten Liziba Liangshan Chicken is equal to having never eaten Liangshan Chicken".
The selection of ingredients for Lizibaliangshan chicken is almost strict. For example, when it comes to the choice of main ingredients, Lizibaliangshan chicken has established 12 criteria for chicken selection: the aggressive Guizhou Liupanshui Running Chicken, a growth period of 10 to 12 months, a weight of 5 to 8 pounds, a red comb, and a diet mainly consisting of green plants and insects from the mountains.
The characteristic of Liangshan chicken lies in its fragrance. It is made with dozens of superior spices such as garlic, ginger, pickled pepper, and pepper powder. It is stir fried using traditional Chinese medicine ingredients such as wolfberry, jujube, angelica, and sand ginseng, and is brewed with a unique secret recipe. The chicken is smooth and tender, with a harmonious balance of yin and yang, leaving a lingering aroma in the mouth and an endless aftertaste.

02 Tea infused rice: Delicious but tea infused riceFrom Exit A of Fotuguan Station on Metro Line 2, walk straight along the three story road on your right for about 5 minutes and you will see this tea and rice shop selling Jianghu cuisine located halfway up the mountain.
When I was a child, my grandparents said, 'You look better than plain clothes, and you taste better than tea and rice.'. The internet famous dishes of tea infused rice include: tea infused rice, half fish, spicy sausage, and sauce flavored taro.
The feeling of tea soaked rice is very refreshing. Scooping up a spoonful of steaming tea soaked rice, a faint fragrance wafts into the nose. The rice grains are distinct, with just the right amount of softness and hardness. When chewed carefully, one can feel the sweetness of the rice.
Half of the fish is actually a whole fish, with a bright red sauce and green Sichuan peppercorns and scallions that make the tongue unusually restless. The fried fish is topped with scallions, not spicy, but slightly sweet.
Sauce flavored taro has a salty and sweet taste, with a crispy surface and a soft and sticky texture when bitten. Spicy sausage is slightly different from braised sausage in that it is slightly greasy. Spicy sausage is tight and chewy, with a crisp and crunchy texture.

Route: Liziba Viewing Platform → Liziba Anti Japanese War Site Park → Third Floor Road → Erchang Cultural and Creative Park → Eling Park → Chongqing Tiandi
01 Liziba Viewing Platform: Liziba Anti Japanese War Site ParkAfter tasting delicious food and taking a break, I believe everyone has new enthusiasm for the afternoon journey. If you bask in the city light of Chongqing in the morning, then you can cross the urban texture of Chongqing in the afternoon.
The first stop in the afternoon is the Liziba Viewing Platform.
The spectacular sight of rail trains passing through buildings and trains heading towards spring have made Line 2 popular throughout the country. The observation deck is built for tourists to take photos and stop, with an area of 840 square meters and a maximum capacity of 350 people for simultaneous viewing. There is also a glass wharf about 8 meters long located outside the platform, which is reasonably offset from the "track through the building" shooting area and can interact with trains in various poses.
The Liziba Anti Japanese War Site Park is only two to three hundred meters away from the viewing platform, and it is easy to find according to the road signs. It faces the narrow slope of the Jialing River cliff, with a total length of 1.8 kilometers and an area of 120000 square meters. It is the first anti Japanese war site park in Chongqing.
The park consists of 5 groups of 9 anti Japanese war sites and natural scenery, and has restored buildings including Gao Gongguan, Li Gengu's old residence, Liu Xiang Gongguan, the former site of the National Senate, the School of Transportation Bank, and the former site of the Treasury. It showcases the historical features of Chongqing's political, economic, cultural, military, diplomatic, financial and other aspects during the anti Japanese war period, and is a new symbol and interpretation of anti Japanese war culture.
If you have good physical strength or love hiking, then we can spiral up from the third floor road, the Second Factory Cultural and Creative Park, and then to the Goose Ridge Park.
Travel Tips
Public transportation: Monorail Line 2, buses 210, 215, 219, 262, 318, etc. can be reached by getting off at Liziba Station. There is a parking lot in the park.

02 Third floor road: Each floor has unique sceneryThere is a yellow house along the direction of Chongqing Tiandi at Liziba Station of the rail transit, and next to it is the entrance of a three story road. The three-level road connects the Erchang Cultural and Creative Park on the mountain and Liziba Main Street at the foot of the mountain, with a drop of over 100 meters. Hiking up is the 'most Chongqing' route.
The first floor of the three story road houses the former residence of General Stilwell, which is now the Chongqing Stilwell Museum. It is the only museum in China named after a foreign soldier.
On December 8, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, marking the outbreak of the Pacific War. Subsequently, the United States declared war on Japan, and the Allied powers decided to establish a Chinese theater of war, with Chiang Kai shek as the supreme commander and Stilwell as the chief of staff. The establishment of the Chinese theater of war provided a coordinated command center for the allied forces in Myanmar, Thailand, and India, which played an important role in attacking the Japanese army.
Not far from the Chongqing Stilwell Museum is the former site of the American Flying Tigers. Their story may be well-known to many Chinese people, with the camel hump route being the most famous. In 1941, Chen Naide was commissioned by Chiang Kai shek to form the United States Volunteer Air Force Assistance Brigade to China and join the Chinese War of Resistance Against Japan.
On the second floor of the road, there is a beverage shop called "Seeking Flowers by the River Coffee Building", which is an excellent observation deck. Drinking tea on its terrace, one can enjoy the peaceful view of the river on one side, while on the other side, the through the tower train of Liziba seems to be running over one's own scalp as it shuttles diagonally from above, which can also be considered a unique feeling.

03 Second Factory Cultural and Creative Park: Cultural and Artistic Renewal of Industrial SitesAt the top of the three story road, you arrive at the Erchang Cultural and Creative Park, which is a must visit check-in spot for young people visiting Chongqing.
The Second Factory Cultural and Creative Park was originally Chongqing Printing Second Factory. The old factory buildings in its standalone old buildings, combined with postmodern art styles, exude a different vitality between the old and the new; And through the movie 'Passing Through Your World', it became popular throughout the country.
If visiting the third floor road has already made you feel a bit tired, you can take a break here. Various shops here are worth exploring, such as Dawang Oil Tea and so on.

Ticket information: Free
04 Goose Ridge Park: The Pearl on the RidgeGoose Ridge Park, there is no need to introduce it to locals in Chongqing, as it has already been integrated into people's daily lives and sightseeing walks.
For out of town tourists, it can be briefly summarized as follows: the park is located on Erling Main Street in Yuzhong District, Chongqing, at the top of Yuzhong. The Yangtze River and Jialing River flow through the park in the north and south. The vegetation in the park is lush, the secret scenery is leisurely, and the cultural charm is profound. There are attractions such as the rope bridge, Kansheng Tower, Hiroshima Garden, Tongxuan, and the tomb of Su Junlie. Gazing at the towering Shenglou Tower, one can see the scenery from all directions. It is exceptionally majestic and is a must visit check-in spot for tourists from other places coming to Chongqing.
Erling Park is the earliest private garden in Chongqing and a model of Chongqing gardens. When we went, it was the season full of spring, the weather was beginning to clear up, tourists were flocking around, and everyone was as excited as flowers. The air in the park is clear and refreshing, with green plants filling the sky, making people feel uplifted. A few steps into the door, two gray walled and blue tiled buildings on the left come into view. They are our first stop on our tour of Goose Ridge Park - the former site of the Australian Embassy.
This building was built during the Republic of China period, with one floor and one bottom, made of brick and wood structure. It was the location of Australia's first embassy in China, and the first Australian embassy in China worked here from 1941 to 1946. The small courtyard paved with bluestone is refreshing and pleasant, with a stone tank of rainwater and a moss covered rockery, polished by time, like nature.
The former Australian Embassy is adjacent to the Danish Embassy. In August 1941, due to the Danish government's recognition of the Nanjing Wang puppet regime and the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, the government of the Republic of China severed ties with it. This historical fact is unpleasant, but the exquisite courtyard at its entrance is worth savoring.
Coming out of the Danish Embassy onto the relatively wide road inside the compound, on the left is the Gooseneck Villa, with its independent courtyard and winding corridors, worth a stroll. Ascending along the highway and entering the middle right, there are various scenic spots such as Lianchi, Sanyou Pavilion, and the Soviet Martyrs' Tomb. They are arranged in a staggered manner on the slope, showcasing the layered and three-dimensional feel of the mountain city park.
The central part of Goose Ridge Park is its iconic attraction, the rope bridge built in the 1920s. This bridge originally had a beautiful name "Yigan Bridge", where "yi" (y ī) means water ripples, "gan" (g ā n) means "langgan", which is a beautiful stone like beads. Although the name is elegant, most people do not recognize its characters, so they intuitively call this bridge "Rope Bridge".
As the most well preserved scenic spot in the park, the rope bridge is not in the usual straight or broken line shape, but in an "S" shape. There are also inverted stalactites embedded on the top of each bridge opening! Building such a rope bridge is quite labor-intensive, and it is said that it took nine rounds of rework to complete, earning it the title of a rare bridge. The unique design, peculiar shape, difficult construction, and well preserved condition of this bridge are truly admirable.
The rope bridge runs through both sides of Ronghu Lake, connecting the surrounding scenery. There is a poem called "Bu Yi Gan Bridge" that goes: "A thousand flowers and ten thousand bamboo roads form three branches, and flowers can be seen through the bamboo bridge.
Feige is located at the northern end of Goose Ridge Park, with its blue tiles and colorful eaves supported by the green screen in the park, which is very eye-catching. Due to its hexagonal center resembling a flying bird, it is named Feige. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Chiang Kai shek and Soong Mei ling used to escape the heat here.
The high point in the park is Guansheng Tower, also known as Liangjiang Pavilion, located at the northeast end of Erling Park. The tower is 41.5 meters high and has an elevation of 380 meters. It is divided into nine floors, with each floor offering a panoramic view, making it an excellent place for climbing and looking into the distance.
Taking the Kansheng Tower in Erling Park as the endpoint of the Red Three Rock Route, we can stand on the Yuzhong Ridge and end today's journey with infinite beauty. The sunset spreads golden light over the two rivers, with high-rise buildings in the city lining up in layers and extending into the distance; At night, the sea of lights flickered in the sky, appearing ethereal and elusive.
Truly magnificent! This magnificent city of mountains and waters!
