Ximatan is a "mountaintop lake" at the intersection of Cangshan Yuju Peak and Longquan Peak. It was called "Gaohe" in ancient times and was a water conservancy project during the Nanzhao period.

Legend has it that when Kublai Khan marched south to Dali, he led his troops over Cangshan and entered Dali. He once stationed Xima here, so it was renamed "Xima Tan".
