For friends who are traveling to Guangdong for the first time, they will definitely struggle with where to go, and the name "Foshan" must appear on the play list.
"Foshan is a national historical and cultural city. Historically, it is one of the four famous towns in China. It is known as the hometown of pottery art, the hometown of martial arts, and the hometown of Cantonese opera. It is a famous city of dragon boat, dragon and lion culture in China, the birthplace of Cantonese opera, and the birthplace, prosperity and inheritance of Guangfu culture."
This is Baidu Encyclopedia's definition of Foshan, but in my concept, Foshan is a food paradise, and the title of the hometown of rice fishing is not a false name. Next, I will use words to take you to tour Fengjian Water Town in Shunde, Foshan, and start a summer trip!
The three-piece tourism package "Food, Accommodation and Travel" puts food first, so let's start with the taste!
Shunde snacks are famous in Guangdong. Many people from surrounding cities will drive to Shunde to find food. They will go to Chencun to eat Chencun noodles, Lunjiao cakes, and Daliang to eat Shuangpi milk. Then they will have to eat fish when they come to Fengjian!
It makes sense that this place is called the hometown of fishing rice. Fish is indeed a major feature of the area. Fish skin, mud carp balls, fish cakes, fish noodles, dried fish, etc. are all very worth trying.
There are many fish raised in the river in Fengjian, mostly gray-black carp and grass carp. Local residents will place a long fishing net in the river and salvage it when they return home at sunset to see if there is any harvest. If the fish are too small, they will be released into the river, and if the size is moderate, they will be used to dry the fish. The authentic dried fish are not directly dried by the sun, but are hung under a big tree near the river to dry, so that the sweet aroma of the fish can be preserved, and even the mouth will flow.
Fresh fish skin
Local people make fish skin almost every day or every other day. Peel a whole piece of fish skin from the dace, and then clean the dace skin so that no fish scales can be left, which will greatly affect the taste. It may seem simple to burn the fish skin with hot water and then pass it through the cold river (flushing cold water), but the focus is on the materials and process of fishing and mixing. The bottom of Fengjian's fish skin is not ordinary cucumbers and carrots, but pickled sour melons and radishes, papaya, sour ginger, etc. The taste of acetic acid is seamlessly combined with the fish skin. When crispy peanuts and white sesame seeds are added, in addition to the appearance It looks good, it can also chop off the fishy smell. It is really delicious and refreshing, and it is especially comfortable to eat in summer.
fish noodles
How does a fish turn into a bowl of fish noodles? Fish noodles are noodles made with dace meat. First cut off the fish meat, beat it with your hands until it becomes glued, and finally turn it into slurry. Then put the fish paste into a flower squeezing bag like making cakes and squeeze it hard into noodles. The master's kung fu needs to be very skillful and use even force to squeeze out continuous noodles. Usually, a bowl of good fish noodles only has one super long noodle. The locals call it "longevity noodles" and eat it on birthdays. This kind of hand-made noodles has a bit rough feeling. It is not as smooth as northern ramen, but it tastes particularly tough, chewy, and has a strong fish flavor. The noodle soup will be boiled overnight with the most essential fish bones to taste it. That bowl of fish noodle soup is so fresh, sweet and delicious, and it also has a very high nutritional price!
dace cake
This is an unusual home-cooked dish. Chop the dace meat into minced fish, then rub it into a cake shape, and fry it on both sides until golden yellow. The key to cooking is that the fish should be delicious and the ingredients added, such as chopped green onion, horseshoe, etc., should be just right. Too little will not cover the fishy smell, and too much will steal the delicious flavor of the fish. Although this dish is relatively common, it is not easy to make it fragrant, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, sweet and delicious.
Winter melon fish soup
Guangdong is accustomed to eating wax gourd in hot summer, which can relieve heat and cool down. Winter gourd and Wan fish are a natural pair, and the soup is delicious and delicious. In addition, pepper will be added to the soup and boiled to remove the fishy smell. Secondly, the spicy taste of the pepper stimulates the taste buds and makes people more appetizing. Every time I eat this dish, I drink not only fish and wax gourd, but also the soup. I can't stop it. I have eaten from several restaurants, all of which are very good. Of course, the one I went to Foshan's Jun 'an place would be more authentic.
Jun 'an steamed pork
Due to the popularity of the delicious food program "A Bite of China", the original steamed pork belly is famous. The moderately fat pork belly is marinated and then cooked, and finally steamed with firewood. The heat is just right to lock in the umami and gravy of the pork, and it is served with white sesame seeds., more sweet and delicious. Moreover, the pork here is all suckling pigs, which are piglets that have not yet grown up, so it has no taste at all. It's great!
fried milk
Have you ever tried fried milk? This is a specialty snack in Shunde. First freeze the liquid milk until it is like a gel, dip it with flour, fry it in boiling oil, and pick it up. It tastes crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with the aroma of milk in its mouth, which is particularly tempting and is still a favorite among children.
ginger milk
Shunde is famous for its double skin milk, but in fact I personally prefer ginger milk. Ginger milk must be ground with spicy and ginger-flavored little turmeric. The milk needs water and milk, and the temperature is also very particular. It is boiled and turned off the heat and let it dry for about 2-3 minutes. The warm milk collides with the ginger juice, and finally remains still for a minute, and it will solidify. In this way, a bowl of fragrant and smooth ginger milk will be ready. I feel like I speak well, but I have never succeeded in making a bowl myself, so the speed at which I make the milk is also very important. It is not easy!
sesame paste
There is another snack that is very popular in Fengjian Water Town, which is hand-beaten sesame paste. There are several very small shops by the river that specialize in eating sesame paste. In fact, there are only one or two elderly people selling it themselves. Because it is purely handmade, it is very thick. The pure natural sesame flavor does not add any auxiliary ingredients. It won't be too sweet or greasy, and it's just delicious!
When I was wandering in the water town, I was attracted by the fragrance of sesame seeds when I walked to the back street. I saw an aunt in her 60s bringing a bowl of sesame paste to a young man. In the blink of an eye, I saw a pot of black sesame seeds and a tea-beating stick under the big tree beside the surging side. I came forward to try it, so I picked up the stick and chopped the sesame seeds and peanuts. The aunt came over and said, this is not how sesame seeds are beaten. Chopping them violently will make the aroma of sesame seeds disappear. You need to use Yin power to stir the sesame seeds in a circle to retain the original aroma to the greatest extent possible.
Fengjian Village was interviewed by CCTV, and Nicholas Tse also recorded programs here, so almost all shops showed their own highlight moments. Because of this, sometimes I don't know how to choose, so I will recommend a few to everyone!
There is a Jinshi archway in the center of the water town. There is a snack street behind the archway. There are more than 20 restaurants in a short distance of 300 meters. The first restaurant at the entrance of the alley is called "Old Neighborhood". The difference from other restaurants is that it is not CCTV. It is a photo of Hong Kong star "Fourth Brother" Xie Xian (Nicholas Tse's father) bringing friends to help out, so I came in.
[Old Neighborhood] is relatively bright and spacious. Every table is a big teapot like when I was a child, giving people a very cordial feeling. The four big characters "Taste Shunde" are super eye-catching, which is what I want.
The products of this restaurant are not disappointing, especially the fish skin and double fried milk. They are very delicious. I recommend everyone to try them next time.

In fact, I have been to Fengjian several times. Every time, I go to a different restaurant, hoping to have a different surprise. However, I go to this [Huang Chef] almost every time because of one of the dishes here., Winter Melon Wan Fish Soup!
This restaurant is not in the scenic area of the water town, but it is only a hundred meters away from the scenic area. It is not an Internet celebrity restaurant reported in the news. Because of this, few tourists come, but they are all visited by locals. The restaurant doesn't seem special, but every time it's time to eat, guests come in waves after waves. I don't need to say more to understand that the products here really cannot be underestimated.

There is also a snack bar called "Shuangqiao Food Store". Next to Jin 'ao Bridge, it has a small and inconspicuous shop. It was visited by Nicholas Tse when he was recording a food program. The signature product of this house is hand-ground sesame paste. The boss takes a large plate of black sesame seeds early in the morning and puts them into a stone mill to grind them. When you get closer, you can smell the fragrance of sesame seeds, which is very tempting. But I heard from locals that the ginger milk here is better!

Fengjian is one of the oldest water towns in Shunde. When the local government decided to renovate the countryside in 2010, it immediately included it in the renovation, and it invested 150 million yuan in one investment. However, the renovation did not change the original appearance of Fengjian Village. It did not widen the river course, nor did it build bridges. It just repaired Mashi Road, maintained and renovated old buildings, and added several bronze statues to introduce Fengjian's history and characteristics. The renovation of the town will naturally attract investment from outsiders, and petty bourgeois B & Bs will bloom everywhere.
Of course, there are many B & Bs among the scenic spots in the water town, most of which adopt antique designs. However, many times, they are decorated inappropriately and are a bit "imitating the East", which makes me lose the intention to stay in it. I have been to Fengjian so many times. I always go back and forth in one day.
Maybe it's fate. I arranged this trip to the water town for my best friend because everyone was a little upset recently and wanted to temporarily escape the bustling city. Coincidentally, I went to the owner of this B & B,"Runlan Elegance Ju". Just by hearing the name, I feel elegant and extraordinary. Looking at the photos, the entire B & B is very retro and nice.
The boss is also a very nice person. The four of us planned to squeeze into the twin room. The boss said that if there were no guests that night, he would arrange two rooms for us, so that we would have a comfortable stay. Anyway, the room was empty. I was so moved that we decided to stay here!
Sure enough, there were only four of us guests that night. The boss arranged one room for us and one room for the top spot.
The story of the inn
There were no other guests for the past two days, and the inn was very quiet. I could also chat with the boss. The boss's surname is Liu and his name is Xinchao, which can be seen in the words hanging on the wall of the hall. Boss Liu is a native of Foshan. His concepts are relatively traditional and his habits are close to those of ancient literati. He likes to help himself with the word "Runlan", which means the breeze at the foot of the mountain and moistens the earth. It sounds very poetic. He himself is engaged in house design and construction. He has a lot of research on ancient architecture and decoration. He has always wanted to build an original ancient building, so he built this piece of land in Fengjian and built this [Runlan Elegance]. The entire building is designed completely in accordance with the image of the Qing Dynasty's blue brick Wokar House. The door is an ancient dragon gate. The roof beams are carved with Lingnan elements such as orchids, swallows, and grapes. The interior is filled with complex carved wooden furniture. Because the Qing Dynasty The carving technology is very developed, and people like this gorgeous and complex decoration. Therefore, the people at that time were also accustomed to using this kind of furniture. Walking in the house, it really gave people the feeling of traveling through ancient times.
Every detail of this B & B is in place, including tea sets, stairs, doors and windows, etc. What surprised me most was that there were two large cigarette beds on both sides of the living room on the first floor. Can you imagine the cigarette shop in the late Qing Dynasty? Everyone was lying on the big smoky bed smoking clouds and puffing smoke. The sky was dim and the earth was dark, and it was like dying. This decoration was really a feature of the Qing Dynasty.
Homestay Introduction
The floor of the hall is very high, which makes it easy to attract natural winds, making it quite cool even in the hot summer. The ceiling fan on the ceiling is also very retro and practical. I like this style best. The B & B has three floors. The first floor is the living area of the lobby and the shopkeeper. There are 3 rooms on the second floor and 3 rooms on the third floor. There are only 6 rooms in total. The boss said that the house was originally built for him, so there were very few rooms. Later, his friends thought that his house really had the ancient Lingnan flavor and should give everyone the opportunity to stay in to experience this authentic cultural atmosphere. So he ignored his family's opposition and turned it into a B & B.
There are 6 rooms with names ranging from "No. 1 Scholar" to "Jinshi". They are representatives of the Qing Dynasty imperial examinations. I can't help but feel like I'm in. The room I live in is the "Top Scholar". The tables, chairs, beds, cabinets, and shelves in the house are all carved wooden furniture. The big bed is an ancient wooden bed with four corners and four pillars to frame mosquito nets. The windows are colored window grilles, and the chandeliers are also antique. Such a well-in-place B & Bs are rare. This room should be the largest among the entire B & B. It has a small side hall and a round marble table with fragrant incense placed. When lit, the smoke curled up, which makes it quite interesting.
Locals like to sit in the cool patio at night, drinking tea, eating Lingnan fruits, chewing melon seeds, chatting, and the cool breeze blowing. It is very comfortable. This should be a reflection of the life of leisure Lingnan people. With such a fast pace of life, such a sigh is really rare!
We were afraid of mosquito bites, so we stayed in the side hall of my room, drinking modern drinks and eating local century-old delicacies such as Paosha and Ox Ears. It was quite enjoyable. But let me remind you that when buying drinks and food in the village, you must see clearly. Many counterfeit goods look similar and are easy to get wrong. We bought a few wrong bottles, and we regret it too late!
If you also want to be a leisurely Lingnan native, I recommend you to come to this B & B.

[Foshan Shunde Runlan Yaju Homestay]
Address: No. 1, Qingyun Lane, Fengjian Water Town, Shunde District, Foshan City, Guangdong
Price: About 700 yuan on weekdays, about 1000 yuan on weekends and holidays, no meals
Tips: The inn is not next to the waterway, but it is not far away. It takes two steps to enter the water town, which is very convenient. On weekdays, only the boss's mother, the old lady, takes care of the store, so the inn does not provide catering, but there is food when you go out, and you can also take out food. The B & B can also provide free Qing Dynasty costumes to take pictures. Although I haven't worn them, friends who have time will feel better wearing them for photos.

History of Ancient Bridge
The waterways in the Jiangnan water town are relatively straight. When you look over, hundreds of bridges overlap, and the colors of black, white and gray are blurred layer by layer, like a painting of splashing ink. In contrast, the Lingnan water town is more verdant, with rippling blue waves and endless twists and turns. Although Fengjian Village is one of the oldest villages, it has well preserved the pattern of the ancient village. There are more than 100 ancient houses in the village, ancient trees are dotted with gravel floors, ancient roads are crisscrossed, trees are shaded on both sides, birds are singing and fragrant flowers are fragrant. It is a poetic style of another school.
When I travel through the water towns, there is a bridge every hundred steps. Most bridges are constructed very simple, which can be said to be simple. A few stone slabs are erected across the bridge deck and a few pieces of wood are erected to form railings. But even so simple, these bridges are still very historical.
[Jin 'ao Bridge] is also one of the oldest bridges in the area. It was built in the Qing Dynasty and is built with red gravel. It is a beam-type single-hole stone arch bridge. The horizontal rails of the bridge body are engraved with "Golden Turtle" on one side and "Jade Turtle" on the other side. Two names for each bridge are rare. It is said that this bridge was built by a local Jinshi surnamed Liu based on the Jinao Jade Belt Bridge in the royal garden of the capital. Although it doesn't seem special now, its historical significance is still very important to Feng Jian.
[Juji Bridge] is located directly in front of the Jinshi Archway. It can be said to be one of the most important bridges in the entire water town. It was built in the Song Dynasty. Due to its long history, after many maintenance and renovations, there are now no traces of the Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties. Only the small stone lions left behind in the Qing Dynasty are clearly visible. I climbed up the steps and touched the exquisite patterns on the stone railing with my hand. I still felt the depth of history and the vicissitudes of time.
[Mingyuan Bridge] is one of the three major ancient bridges as famous as the Jin 'ao Bridge and the Juji Bridge. It is also one of the earliest three-hole ancient bridges recorded in our country's literature. In ancient times, bridges were used to carving stone lions on their capitals. After being baptized by wind and frost, the lion's appearance can no longer be clearly seen. It is still vaguely visible that each lion has different shapes. Maybe the story about the bridge can be understood, but who can really understand some traces that have passed?
Not far from the entrance of the village, there is a "Shishi Lane Bridge" only about 5 meters. The wooden board bridge has a fence on one side, which looks simple and simple, but when you take a closer look at the introduction on the wall, it turns out that this is an 800-year-old alley bridge. According to reports, Fengjian Village has crisscrossed rivers, and commerce was prosperous during the Southern Song Dynasty. In order to facilitate travel and business, villagers built this bridge with stones and wood. They also built a stone lion to protect the divine beast at the bridge, named "Shishi Lane Bridge". The construction of unilateral guardrails was because in ancient times, villagers used pole poles to carry things on their shoulders to avoid collisions, so only unilateral guardrails were designed. After nearly a thousand years of baptism, the stone lion has become beyond recognition, but it still stands at the bridge to protect this beautiful water town.
Fengjian River is smooth, so commerce and trade are smooth, gradually forming a prosperous Weishi. Taking the bridge as the city is a symbol of Lingnan Water Town. Fengjian has a village agreement stipulating that everything is prohibited in the bridge area that hinders traffic, and will be strictly punished. Therefore, the villagers abide by the rules very much and only sell them on both sides of the bridge. The bridge is only used for peers. For villagers, the bridge is a convenient passage, but it is an indispensable scenery for tourists.
Ancient house culture
Fengjian Village is not big. At its peak, there were 78 ancestral halls, and there are also as many as 20 existing. It is obvious that this is a village inhabited by multiple surnames. Each surname will set up an ancestral hall for its ancestors, so there are many ancient ancestral halls here. You can't appreciate it one by one, you can only experience it in a few personal experiences.
Fengjian Village has the majority of the surname Liang, with Li, Chen, Huang, Guo and other surnames. This shows how prosperous this village was at that time, attracting merchants and common people from all over the world to live here. I passed a [Guo's Ancestral Temple], which is square and has a red wool clay on the exterior, which is relatively rare.
The area of the ancestral hall is not large. There are many bamboo fishing gear placed on the ground. The craftsmanship is very meticulous, durable and strong. Bamboo weaving is one of the oldest handicrafts in human history, and this craft has been improved in Shunde's land of fish and rice. Thin weaving, insertion, threading, cutting, locking, nailing, binding, etc. have been added to the traditional weaving method to make the patterns vary in color. This process is called warp and weft weaving. This weaving method is widely used in weaving fishing gear, allowing the development and inheritance of bamboo weaving techniques. Commonly used fishing gear include fish baskets, fish sieves, bamboo foils, shrimp cages, eel cages, mud cages, bamboo wicker baskets, bamboo plaques, etc. Only you have never thought about anything that you have never seen before, and there is nothing that you can't do.
There was also a wind valley machine placed at the entrance of the ancestral temple. This was the first time my daughter saw it and was very curious about how this machine worked. I briefly explained to her, and she shook the handle as if she understood it, to see when she would have the opportunity to take her to the real wind valley machine in the countryside.
[Liu's Grand Ancestral Temple] Standing facing the water, calm and deep. As Feng Jian's surname, Liu's family had begun to take root here as early as the 13th year of Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1415), making it one of the larger ancestral temples in the area. The location of Liu's Grand Ancestral Hall is called "Village Root", which means "the foundation of a village", demonstrating the long history and far-reaching foundation of the Grand Ancestral Hall. The architectural style of the ancestral hall is simple and dignified, exuding the atmosphere of a large family everywhere. There is also a "local love" introduced to the people of the water town in the room, which is attributed to 16 characters,"Step onto the boat, cultivate and study diligently, worship piously, and feel contented." A few simple words express the wisdom of life of Feng Jian people. Dragon boats, hydroplowing, Buddha rites, and simplicity are primitive and mysterious cultural codes, full of life and humanistic spirit unique to the characteristics of water town.
You can see the [Li's Grand Ancestral Hall] just a few steps away. This ancestral hall inherits the water marriage culture of Lingnan Water Town. Many statues in this regard can be seen on the patio. The custom of marriage on water originated from the etiquette of family singing and marriage. It was formed in the early Qing Dynasty, integrating cultural elements of Guangfu and Hakka. From preparing for the wedding banquet to picking up the bride, paying homage to the high hall, meeting with singers, etc., boats are used as a means of transportation, and saltwater songs are used throughout the entire wedding process. It is really quite a flavor.
[Li Gong Temple for Political Affairs of the Song Dynasty] is a village history and cultural center. Here, not only can you visit the unique architectural style of Li Gong Temple for Political Affairs of the Song Dynasty, but you can also have an in-depth understanding of Feng Jian's profound historical and cultural heritage. Through the collection and exhibition of old objects, you can further experience the unique charm of Feng Jian's ancient charm, including the unique traditional culture of Yongchun Boxing, Dragon Boat Rap, eight-tone gong and drum cabinets, and Dragon Boat Racing, which is definitely a feast for the eyes.
The "Jinshi Memorial Arch" in the middle of the village can also be called the "Liang's Jinshi Memorial Arch". Fengjian has a long history and outstanding people. He has always respected Confucianism, valued martial arts and virtues. Many scholars and scholars have been produced in the small village. Eight scholars of the Feng family have been produced. The three brothers of the Liang family are all the grand occasion of the Hanlin Academy. Among them, Liang Qiaosheng, a Jinshi in the Ming Dynasty, was the most famous. In order to commend this Jinshi Jinshi, the emperor specially awarded him to build a Jinshi archway, also known as Enrong Building. However, the real body was destroyed in the 1960s and 1970s. Later, with the efforts of villagers and the local government, the original site was rebuilt as it was originally. Now it has become a landmark attraction in Fengjian, and of course it is also a beautiful scenery.
Dragon Boat Friendship
Dragon boats are a pivotal element in Lingnan culture. They are full of water town characteristics and carry the unity spirit of collectivism. The difference between Shunde dragon boats and other areas is that in addition to the "dragon racing" used for competition, there are also "swimming dragons" used for viewing. They are large in size and gorgeous in decoration. Whenever the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated, they will go around in the village. The people on the dragon boats will sprinkle water on the residents on both sides, which means that they are like a fish in water, the family is safe, and the wealth is rolling in!
Nowadays, dragon boats are rarely seen in the village during the Dragon Boat Festival. Instead, they are wupeng boats, allowing tourists to experience the culture of the water town in depth. The Wupeng boat is a standard feature in the water town. Whether in Jiangnan or Lingnan, it is one of the indispensable water town elements and a favorite among tourists. If you want to deeply experience the beauty of the water town, you can only experience the style of a land of fish and rice by riding this small boat that is steered by human hands and wandering in the river for a moment. I think many locals in Foshan will also take advantage of the holidays to bring their families to experience it. Unfortunately, my daughter was afraid of water and didn't dare to ride, so I had to give up the experience. On the shore, I watched the wupeng boats pass by the bridge. The villagers were chatting while waving water and grass fans in the shade of the trees, tasting Lingnan's best fruit lychee in their mouths. It reminded me of Su Dongpo's famous saying,"Eat 300 lychee a day.", I will never refuse to be a Lingnan native."

In the afternoon, I wandered in the peaceful Fengjian, only to find that the trees by the river were all hollow vines. You may not be familiar with this kind of fruit, but for me born in the 1980s, it is a childhood memory. Thirty years ago, most of these hollow grapes were planted along the rivers in Guangzhou. Pick and shake them, and a big seed inside would sway. You can bite it in large mouthfuls without peeling and wiping your clothes. It is very clear and sweet. However, Guangzhou is now too polluted. Hollow grapes need clear river water for irrigation. Now they have almost disappeared into the city and have been replaced by coarser mango trees. I can meet hollow grapes again here, and a dusty memory comes back to me.
I like to be simple, simple but leisurely.
