September 22 is "World Rhino Day". It was launched in 2010 by the South Africa Office of the World Wide Fund for Nature, a non-governmental environmental organization. It aims to carry out various forms of ecological and environmental protection activities to protect rhinos. However, in recent years, due to the impact of ecological changes and human activities, the global rhino population has been decreasing. Currently, there are only about 20,000 rhinos in the world. It is urgent to protect and breed rhinos.
It is understood that in order to protect rare rhinos, Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World has established the "Chimelong World Rare Wildlife Species Source Base" in Qingyuan, Guangzhou, focusing on the breeding, research, breeding and other work of rare animals, and has achieved good results.
The world lost Sudan
On March 19, 2018, the last male northern white rhino "Sudan" on earth passed away. For animal protection professionals around the world, that day will probably be unforgettable for the rest of their lives. The death of Sudan meant that the last hope of the entire northern white rhino population was shattered. From then on, there was only one mother and daughter pair left in this population who could not reproduce naturally, and the possibility of continuing the species was close to zero.
The world's rare animal, the white rhinoceros, has previously been included in the World Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Endangered Species. However, the fundamental cause of their imminent extinction is illegal trade by humans! On the one hand, rhino horns are regarded by humans as decorative props, and on the other hand, they are also considered to be a "panacea" for treating diseases and fighting cancer. Although modern medicine believes through experiments that the ingredients in rhino horns are almost impossible to absorb by the human body, the actual medicinal value is not high, and it still cannot prevent humans from pursuing rhino horns.
In 2012, China's Yao Ming made a special trip to visit Sudan in a Kenyan reserve, and later filmed a public service advertisement to protect rhinos, calling on everyone to "no sale, no killing." In 2018, the first case of the southern white rhinoceros bred in the Changlong Wildlife World in China, the "second generation" of the first southern white rhino made its public appearance, which provided new hope for the continuation of the white rhino species, and also gave new hope to animal protectors from all over the world!
Treasure the "rhinoceros" and love the "rhinoceros". Changlong has been taking action
Since the introduction of rhinoceros breeding and management in 1997, Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World has established the Chimelong World Source Base of Rare Wild Animals and Plants in 22 years, and has bred a total of 40 three major rhinoceros species, including white rhinos. 24, and so far, 4 baby white rhinoceros have been successfully bred, forming the largest endangered white rhinoceros population in China. It has made major efforts to preserve species genes and also provided an important support for the genetic preservation of endangered species in the world.
According to animal experts in Chimelong, rhinoceros are a huge animal, and mating is very difficult for them, which affects subsequent reproductive problems. During the introduction of rhinoceros breeding, the staff described an impressive event. On the evening of April 3, 2014, a black rhino couple, addy and tock, finally gave birth to their first baby after a 470-day pregnancy. The baby is now, but after a 24-hour shift care, it is found that the baby cannot lift its head and eat breast milk! Even with everyone's continuous efforts, the cub still did not eat colostrum 12 hours later. Later, an attempt was made to artificially milk and feed the cub, and the cub was successfully allowed to eat breast milk on its own.
To this end, the park has summed up experience and continuously improved technologies and methods such as rhinoceros breeding and reproductive management. During the rhino cub period: through medical training, artificially assisted milk collection and other means, black rhinoceros cubs who cannot receive breast milk after birth can be replenished. The form of milk restores physical strength, thus eating breast milk and developing normally; in other rhino periods: Expand the scope of rhinoceros activities, train male animals 'climbing ability, etc., as well as matching sufficient feed and strong medical and technical personnel as backing, continue to innovate and build in terms of soft power and hard power to create a good living environment for rhinoceros.
Note: There are two subspecies of white rhinoceros: southern white rhinoceros and northern white rhinoceros. The picture shows the southern white rhinoceros, photographed at Chimelong Wildlife World
At the Chimelong Wildlife World, Mr. Romain Pizzi once said: "The introduction of rhinoceros into the zoo for conservation and reproduction has protected the rhinoceros to a certain extent, providing a guarantee for species diversity, and people who do not know about this animal have popularized the importance of protecting rhinoceros. knowledge."
These giant beasts wearing "armor" were once found all over China, but now, wild rhinos are hard to find in China, and these beautiful creatures can only be seen in zoos. In order to avoid tragedies like Sudan from happening again, and for our beautiful creatures, let us act together! Treasure the "rhinoceros" with Changlong and love the "rhinoceros"! Protecting rhinos is urgent!
