June 24, 2017. I took the high-speed train to Nanjing to cover a financial event. Although the stay time was only 6 hours, I squeezed out some time to visit three cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province, namely the former site of Bank of Communications Nanjing Branch, the former site of Marin Hospital and the Da Zhong Pavilion. Nanjing has a long history and culture, and there are many historic sites to visit. Friends who are interested in the history of the Republic of China can especially find traces of history in Nanjing. In 229 AD, Sun Quan, the Great Emperor of Wu, established his capital here. Since then, Liu Song, Xiao Qi, Xiao Liang and Chen of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties successively established their capitals here. Therefore, Nanjing is known as the "Ancient Capital of the Six Dynasties". After that, Nanjing became the western capital of Yang and Wu, the capital of the Southern Tang Dynasty, the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, the capital of the Ming Dynasty, Tianjing of the Taiping Rebellion, and the capital of the Republic of China, so it was called the "Capital of the Ten Dynasties." Nanjing is one of the cities in the Yangtze River Delta that I visit more times. I have made 4 self-driving tours in just 7 years. However, I still have many national key cultural relics protection units in Nanjing and cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province that I have not visited. There are many high-speed trains from Shanghai to Nanjing, taking less than 2 hours. However, if the time taken to the train station and waiting for the bus is included, the advantages are not obvious compared with self-driving tours. Overall, I find it convenient and flexible to travel by car.
June 24, 2017 (Nanjing weather: cloudy to cloudy, 22 to 27 degrees)
Most of the high-speed rail trains from Shanghai to Nanjing are from Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Nanjing South Railway Station. However, some trains also depart from Shanghai Station, and most of them end at Nanjing Station. For my trip, it is more convenient to take the high-speed train from Shanghai Station to Nanjing Station.
At 9:54, take the G7040 from Shanghai Station to Nanjing Station. The ticket price is 139.5 yuan.
Shanghai Station platform.
The maximum speed is more than 290 kilometers per hour.
At 11:52, we arrived at Nanjing Station.
Take Nanjing Metro Line 1 to Xinjiekou. The fare is 2 yuan.
One-way ticket for Nanjing Metro.
The bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen located in the center of Xinjiekou Road.
Xinjiekou. The picture below shows Zhongshan South Road.
There is an introduction to the relocation of Sun Yat-sen's bronze statue on the street. Strictly speaking, it is not relocation, but reconstruction.
The former site of Bank of Communications Nanjing Branch, a cultural relics protection unit in Jiangsu Province. It is located at the northeast corner of Xinjiekou, at the corner of Zhongshan East Road, and is now an ICBC branch. This building was completed in 1933.
The east side of the former site of Bank of Communications Nanjing Branch is next to the former site of Zhejiang Industrial Bank. It was built in 1937 and was announced as an important modern building in Nanjing City. It is now a branch of Bank of China.
Taking Nanjing Metro Line 1 to Gulou, I first photographed the former site of Marin Hospital, which is now Gulou Hospital.
The main buildings at the former site of Marin Hospital still exist. The building built in 1892 faces north to south, has a width of 31.5 meters, a depth of 12 meters, and a construction area of 1277 square meters. Blue bricks are hooked and sewn, red bricks are inlaid, domed windows are opened and tiger windows are built on the roof. The two-story building to the north is in the American colonial architectural style. In 2002, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province.
In 1886 (12th year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), Ma Lin, a Canadian missionary and doctor (1860 - 1947), came to Nanjing to practice medicine and preach. He set up churches and clinics near the Drum Tower and Huashi Street in the south of the city (near Changle Road today). The following year, the American Christian Church decided to raise funds to build a missionary hospital for it. The picture shows the bronze statue of Ma Lin in Gulou Hospital.
The Zifeng Building on the northwest side of Gulou Square is 450 meters high. As of August 2016, this building is the 1st tallest building in Jiangsu, the 6th tallest building in China, and the 10th tallest building in the world.
Drum Tower Square.
Da Zhongting was a cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province in 1957. Located in the northeast of Nanjing Drum Tower Square, it was a six-corner pavilion built during the late Qing Dynasty to preserve the bronze bells left in Nanjing Bell Tower. The Nanjing Bell Tower collapsed during the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty. Both the ringing and standing bells were destroyed. Only the sleeping bell was partially buried in the soil. In the Xianfeng Year of the Qing Dynasty, one was destroyed. In 1889 (the 15th year of the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty), the Jiangning governor moved the remaining one to the present site, and allocated funds were allocated to build a six-corner pavilion with iron beams and iron pillars to hang it. It is called the Iron Pillar Pavilion (Big Bell Pavilion). It is one of the famous giant bells in China.
The event I covered was held at the Intercontinental Nanjing Greenland Hotel.
Shoot Jiming Mountain from the 7th floor of the hotel east. The pagoda in the distance is the Pharmacist Pagoda of Jiming Temple.
Head southeast and shoot Gulou Square.
Take a photo of the large bell pavilion across the street from the hotel.
After the event, I rushed to Nanjing Station to wait for the bus. Xuanwu Lake was photographed in the station square. I remember coming to Nanjing by train for the first time in November 1991. I was so excited to see Xuanwu Lake when I left the station. However, Nanjing Xuanwu Lake is inferior to Hangzhou West Lake.
The tallest building in the distance is Zifeng Building.
Nanjing Station.
There is an aftertaste duck blood vermicelli soup sold in the waiting room. The taste is the same as in stores in the city and the price is slightly more expensive.
A classic aftertaste duck blood vermicelli soup costs 20 yuan.
At 18 o'clock, take the G7023 from Nanjing Station to Shanghai Station. The ticket price is 139.5 yuan. Arrive at Shanghai Station on time at 19:39.
