In the first year of Xuantong of the Qing Dynasty (1909), Duanfang and Zhang Renjun, the governors of Liangjiang, opened a new gate at the western end of the Ming City Wall of Xuanwu Lake in order to facilitate guests visiting the "Nanyang Quanye Association" to visit Xuanwu Lake. It was completed in 1910. In 1928, it was changed to "Xuanwu Gate." Mr. Cai Yuanpei was invited to write the name of the door. In 1934, two entrances were added to the left and right. In 1984, the Xuanwu Gate Tower was built and remains to this day after several renovations. This gate is the most important one of the five gates of Xuanwu Lake. Enter Xuanwu Gate, pass through Cuihong Causeway to Huanzhou, and turn left to Liangzhou.

There are five islands distributed in Xuanwu Lake, called Huanzhou, Yingzhou, Lingzhou, Liangzhou, and Cuizhou, so they are also called "Five Lakes Park".
