It is said that ancient temples are hidden in the mountains, and the lush forest Zijin Mountain in Nanjing is no exception. It is beautiful and has pleasant scenery. It is also known as the "Zhongshan Dragon Pan". It is really the first feng shui treasure place in Jinling. Ancient emperors Sun Quan and Zhu Yuanzhang, and revolutionary pioneer Sun Yat-sen are buried here, of which Sun Yat-sen is world-famous.
Legend has it that in the Southern Dynasties more than 1,500 years ago, the eminent monk Baozhi (the prototype of Ji Gong) came to Zijin Mountain. He took a fancy to Dulong Fu and intended to sleep here. After his death, Emperor Wu of Liang spent money to buy Dulong Fu and bury him. Princess Yongding, the daughter of Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty, spent money to build a Baogong Pagoda for Monk Baozhi. The following year, Emperor Wu of Liang built Kaishan Temple next to the Baogong Tower, taking the meaning of "Kaishan Jingshe". However, hundreds of years later, Zhu Yuanzhang took people to Zijinshan to choose a tomb site for himself. When he came here, he also took a fancy to Dulongfu. To build the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum here, he ordered people to move Baogong Pagoda and Kaishan Temple., moved to the location of today's Linggu Temple, which is the predecessor of Linggu Temple.
In addition to this surviving Linggu Temple on Zijin Mountain, there were also ancient Baiyun Temple, ancient Dinglin Temple (later moved to Fangshan in Jiangning), etc. In addition, there was also a ancient Wanfu Temple located on Xiaomao Peak, the second peak of Zijin Mountain. The temple was hidden on the mountain peak and was destroyed during the Republic of China, so few people know about it.
Wanfu Temple was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Its ancestor was Duan like the Great Monk Fang Gong. The temple has Shanmen, Sanmao Hall, Guanyin Hall, Wu Di Hall, etc. Among them, the Hall of Emperor Wu is dedicated to Sun Quan, the Great Emperor of Wu. There are not many temples in China that dedicate this hero of the Three Kingdoms, and this hall is indeed rare among temples in Nanjing.
It is said that the old monk Duanru Fanggong was an eminent monk outside the world. He lived a simple life, devoted himself to cultivation, and was generous in charity. He often did good deeds without leaving a name and became a role model for his disciples. He also did not allow his disciples to spread his deeds, so that few people knew about him and the temple, and there were few records in historical documents. However, he and the disciples who inherited him passed on this virtue from generation to generation, and therefore was highly respected by future disciples.
When selecting the tomb site for Sun Yat-sen, Soong Ching Ling and others took a short rest here, overlooking the Zhongshan peaks, and finally chose the current location of Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. After the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum was built and held at the Feng 'an Ceremony, it used to serve as the Feng' an Memorial Hall of Sun Yat-sen, displaying gifts from various parties. When the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum was built, the "Yongmu Lu" built for the Sun family to guard the mausoleum was next to the temple.
A famous monk tower was built next to the temple, where the deceased eminent monks were buried. Unfortunately, after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the temple was destroyed by artillery fire from the Japanese invaders, but it has not yet been restored. Later, only four eminent monk towers have been restored, namely the tombs of Duke Duanrufang, the ancestor of Wanfu Temple, the 13th Prince Baoxiaxi, the 14th Prince of Shanhai Valley, and the 15th Prince of Jielao.
Now that we come here, we can see the ruins of this famous monk Tallinn and temple. What will the ancient temple in the mountains look like in our minds? Stroking these eminent monk towers with your hand, the kind eminent monk face seemed to emerge.
This is also a small tourist attraction hidden in the Purple Mountain. Because of the mountain climbing, not many people come. I actually think that during weekend leisure, it is a good choice to climb Zhongshan, which is not too high, to exercise and breathe the oxygen-rich fresh air among the mountains and forests, visit the ruins of ancient temples, and climb high to view the city scenery of Nanjing!
Finally, we will focus on the way to get here. The most convenient way is to go east from Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, bypass Sun Yat-sen Academy and climb up the mountain. It is easy to reach by following the road guidance of "Yongmulu" or "Famous Monk Tallinn". You can also come in other directions. Here, you can reach it by searching for the above two destinations.
