"Zhongshan Mountain is yellow in the wind and rain, and millions of lions cross the river." On April 23, 1949, a million lions broke through the long river and natural chasm and successfully liberated Nanjing, the capital of the Kuomintang. At that moment, dust was thrown down on the blue sky and white sky flag on the tower of the Presidential Palace, and bright red flags fluttered high on it.
Seventy-one years have passed, the smoke has dissipated, and there is no thousand sails competing and the rumbling sound of artillery on the river. The north and south of the river are peaceful and prosperous. A group of "Thousand Sails Race" sculptures rose from the ground at the mouth of the Sancha River on the south bank of the Yangtze River. This is a symbol of victory. It records the war that determined the destiny of the Chinese people.
The "Thousand Sails Race" sculpture consists of 49 red columns of different heights. The cross-section of each column is in the shape of a five-pointed star. The sculpture is divided into six groups, symbolizing that the memorial hall was built in 2009. The 60th anniversary of the victory of the Battle of Crossing the River, the total height of the sculpture is 49.423 meters, implying the victory of the Battle of Crossing the River and the liberation of Nanjing.
At night, the 49 red five-pointed stars that make up the sculpture and 49 large red columns shine on the riverside, like red lighthouses guiding the revolutionaries to move forward bravely, but also like a beacon fire in the sky, making people recall the extraordinary years of the war years, recalling the glory and pride of millions of heroes crossing the river.
Initially, the Victory Memorial Hall across the River was built on the Yijiangmen Gate Tower. Later, due to the increasing number of commemorative items collected, the venue became too small to display. In 2009, a new museum was built on this new site.
The entire memorial hall consists of the main exhibition hall, a sunken square and Victory Square. The south of the main exhibition hall is the sunken square, and the west side is the Victory Square with the sculpture of "Thousand Sails Race". The exhibition hall has two floors and looks like a wooden boat from a distance, meaning "sailing to the ship of victory".
The front of the square at the entrance of the memorial hall is a group sculpture of the General Front Committee of the Battle of Crossing the River. The famous sculptor Wu Weishan created a work based on a group photo of the five people.
There is a small fire ship "Jingdian" on the sunken square. It is a steel steam motor ship with a total length of 23.1 meters, a width of 4.25 meters, and a total tonnage of 41.1 tons. During the Battle of Crossing the River, it once cut through waves and returned to both sides of the Yangtze River. It transported more than 6000 PLA commanders and fighters, and carried Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yi across the river, making illustrious achievements in the victory of the Battle of Crossing the River.
Above the sinking square is a "Victory Bridge" leading to the main venue, which is also 49.423 meters long.
Through exhibitions and displays of this period of history, the main area of the memorial hall recalls the earth-shaking revolutionary history and the passionate years, and remembers the great achievements of the revolutionary ancestors who went on and fought bravely. It has become a "red landmark" of Nanjing's urban culture.
There is also a Victory Monument for Crossing the River on Rehe Road Square at the intersection of Rehe Road and Zhongshan North Road in Nanjing. This monument was completed in 1979. The entire monument is in the shape of a double sailboat. The pedestal is a purple-red hull. A copper commemorative medal for crossing the river with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a weight of about 400 kilograms hangs in the middle of the white double sails. The front of the pedestal is engraved with Deng Xiaoping's handwritten "Monument to Victory in Crossing the River", and the back is engraved with Mao Zedong's handwriting "Seven Laws·People's Liberation Army Occupy Nanjing". There are embossed of the Battle of Crossing the River.
Victory Square, also known as Liu Bocheng Square, was also built on the northwest side of the intersection of Daqiao South Road and Jianning Road. It was completed in April 1999. There is a statue of Comrade Liu Bocheng and an embossed of the Battle of Crossing the River on the square to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Crossing the River and Liu Bocheng, the first mayor of Nanjing City.
