The Peace Hotel is a landmark building in Shanghai City. It is located at No. 20 Nanjing East Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. It is at the junction of Nanjing East Road and Zhongshan East Road on the Bund. It was built by Sir Viktor Sassoon at a cost of 5 million taels of silver. After completion, the Great Xia was named after the Sassoon family. It belongs to the Chicago School of Gothic architecture and is the first modernist building in Shanghai's modern architectural history. It has the most distinctive nine-country suites and many unique restaurants, banquet halls, multi-function halls, bars, rooftop sightseeing gardens, etc.

The two buildings at the intersection of Nanjing East Road in Shanghai are both called Peace Hotel.

The Peace Hotel used to be called Sasun Daxia or Chinachem Hotel. As early as 1996, it was named a national key cultural relic protection unit by the central government in the second batch of the second batch.

The Shanghai Peace Museum exists as a unique part of the Peace Hotel. It may also be the first museum in China to exist in the form of a hotel.

You need to make an appointment for a visit. You can make an appointment by opening the "Huangpu Shanghai-most" public account on WeChat. You can enter 10 minutes in advance of the appointment time, and there is a 20-minute explanation. The little lady is elegant, gentle, articulate, and the quality of the explanation is very high. In addition to the small museum, the lobby, movie corridor, and Chaplin stairs also showed us around. After the explanation, we could also visit it by ourselves and take photos. It was a good visit.

The Peace Hotel has three doors on Nanjing Road. This is the easternmost door on Nanjing Road. Visitors can enter through this door

Entering through the revolving hall door, the lobby floor is paved with milky white Italian marble, and the top is decorated with bronze chandeliers. It is luxurious and elegant, and is known as the "First Floor in the Far East". In the past, when famous aristocrats hosted guests and enjoyed leisure and entertainment, ordinary people can now come and experience it.

The octagonal stained glass ceiling in the lobby of the Peace Hotel allows the natural daylight to shine brightly and is one of the most impressive parts of the hotel. The transparent glass on the top is a century old.

The octagonal dome of the hall is still the same as it was when it was built in 29 years. It all relies on the tall dome for natural lighting. This is the light we get on sunny days at noon, and it is quite bright.

The octagonal hall has four channels in southeast, northwest and northwest

There are four huge silver embossed on the wall below the octagonal pavilion. The inside is made of anhydrite and the outside is made of silver silk.

They describe the living atmosphere and urban environment of the old Shanghai Bund at that time.

Merchant ships on Pujiang are busy transporting goods

The bells of rickshaws and electric rail cars were ringing on the streets

Although that era is a long time ago, it still makes me feel like I traveled through that time.

In the center of the hall, there is a handicraft of a peace dove. It was created and donated by glass artist Shi Senbin to the Peace Hotel to celebrate the 90th anniversary. It relies on traditional glass craftsmanship to shape the body shape and uses deconstructive modern art language to spread the wings of the peace dove. The beautiful gesture is eloquently told.

Made of 1580 pieces of glass and weighing 1 ton, the Peace Pigeon poses lifelike, stable and romantic. It is consistent with the meaning of the Peace Hotel.

In many decorations and seemingly inconspicuous places in the Peace Hotel, the patterns of two greydogs can often be seen. This is the dog of the hotel founder Sassoon. It is said that Sassoon loves horse racing and dog racing.

The bronze chandelier is luxurious and elegant.

On the right side of this door is the Molly Leigh Lounge, and on the left is the location of the famous Jazz Bar.

Jasmine Lounge is located on the first floor of the Peace Hotel. It contains the unique atmosphere of old Shanghai. There are elegant and beautiful slow songs in the restaurant. The smiles on the faces of the service staff give me the deepest memories. Enjoy the warm afternoon tea here. A pleasant time.

When night came, I got up and walked to another part of the restaurant, because the most representative elderly jazz band in the Peace Hotel was already playing its instruments.

The elderly jazz band is composed of six musicians who have been engaged in music for more than half a century. The average age is now 82 years old. On the screen at the door are the first six members of the jazz band. The band's founder and captain Zhou Wanrong and jazz drum performer Cheng Yueqiang are members of the Jamie King Band, the first Chinese jazz band that was popular in Shanghai's Tan Bailemen Ballroom Ballroom in the 1940s. The band has been invited to visit the United States, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and other places 27 times, and has received countless distinguished guests, including former U.S. President Obama, King Harald V of Norway, etc.

The door leading to the west corridor, but I didn't dare to enter

The lobby of the Peace Hotel is a Feng-shaped structure. The vertical in the middle is connected to the corridor leading to the gate of the Bund. The corridor of the Peace Hotel is like a time tunnel, connecting the long hotel corridor, called the movie corridor

Since the 1930s, Peace Hotel has become a favorite place for film shooting due to its legendary and luxurious characteristics. In 1937, the film "Road Angel" starring Zhao Dan and Zhou Xuan was filmed on the Bund. In the following decades, more than 40 well-known domestic and foreign films have been filmed in the Peace Hotel, including "The City that Never Sleeps","The Radio Wave That Never Fades","Ruan Lingyu","Greater Shanghai 1937","Big City Small Things", etc.

The corridor leading to the Chaplin staircase at the east gate are hung with some movie stills taken at the Peace Hotel. The ceilings, wall lamps, etc. along the way, the color matching and the pattern are so beautiful

While walking through the corridor, I saw photos hanging on the walls on both sides of the corridor. The guide said that these were taken by well-known photographers in Shanghai.

The unique architectural style of the Peace Hotel is an important part of the "Shanghai World Architecture Expo". Its south building is a balanced apartment building imitating the Renaissance, while the north building is a Gothic building of the American Chicago School.

The room where Sir Sassoon used to stay is now a picture of Sassoon's Presidential Suite

The Peace Hotel's "Nine Kingdoms Special Suite" includes pictures of exotic suites from China, Britain, the United States, France, Germany, India, Japan, Italy and the West. This is also a major feature of the Peace Hotel

Walking into this doorway means entering the Peace Hotel from the 1930s, because the inside still maintains its original appearance;

A retro old staircase is a famous check-in spot. This staircase is also the shooting location of "Tiny Times 3". Even the famous comedy master Chaplin once stayed there this time.

Called Chaplin Stairs, the most distinctive and beautiful place in the Peace Hotel

There's no way to see where that photo is.

I don't know what to call this sculpture, but it was placed in the lobby before the celebration of the 90th anniversary.

The picture below is a network photo

This east gate, like other gates of the Peace Hotel, is a brass revolving door with a high dome. The door is not very wide, but it is more expensive for one person to enter.

The door near Zhongshan East Road on the Bund is basically closed all year round. It is said that Mr. Feng Shui said: "The inside of the door faces the stairs because the outside door faces the Huangpujiang River. When the door opens, all the bank's money will flow to the Huangpujiang River."

The Peace Hotel Museum is located in the Peace Hotel. You can visit for free. As soon as you enter the door, there is a small staircase on the right hand side. Take a narrow staircase to reach the mezzanine level of the Peace Hotel. It exists as a unique part.

The museum displays a number of "antique-level" items such as copper icicles engraved with the words "Chinachem Hotel", copper key tags, copper thermos, copper ashtrays, silver spoons, etc., as well as various ancient utensils, Art Deco style furniture, and related old newspapers and books, full of mottled historical marks, recording the glory left by the original owner Sassoon and his celebrity and political friends. This is the first museum established in the form of a hotel in China.

In this quiet, hotel-exclusive Peace Museum, various silver utensils, porcelain, crystal ornaments and antiques from the Peace Hotel are displayed; various items used in the hotel, photos of celebrities and dignitaries who have stayed here, and brochures from various periods of the hotel are displayed. Some of the collections in the museum are donated by hotel guests or employees who have worked in the hotel.

This is also a small exhibition hall, which also displays historical relics used in the past. You may not necessarily know the story, but just feel the atmosphere here.

During the visit, there will be explanations from the staff. Through the explanations, you can get a glimpse of the historical and humanistic stories of this hotel.

From 29 to 52, various items used in the "Chinachem Hotel" hotel were marked with the logo--CH

The old objects in the hotel museum reveal the mark of that era. The special-shaped key tags are specially made to protect the famous merchants entering and leaving the hotel. They are too sharp to put in the bag and will inevitably hurt themselves if they are put in the trouser pockets. Only when they are placed at the front desk of the hotel is the safest.

In the 1930s, Fan held his birthday in the Chinachem Hotel. For weddings, anniversaries and other celebrations, the hotel can record a small aluminum record for customers to commemorate them. Due to limited recording equipment, a record can only be recorded for 4 minutes. You can play it with bamboo needles on a 78-rpm manual record player

In 1952, the logo of the item was changed from "Chinachem Hotel" to "Peace Hotel"

The building was completed in 1929 at a cost of US$5 million. At that time, it was called the "Sassoon Building" and was the first real building in Shanghai with more than ten floors. The founder was Victor Sassoon, who decided to create a high-end modern hotel in Sassoon Building, which could represent the top living hotel in Shanghai. So the "Chinachem Hotel" came into being. Sassoon loved Shanghai very much and used the entire 10th floor of the hotel as his private apartment. This luxurious space, which occupied an entire floor, was used by Sassoon alone. The dark green pyramid roof about 10 meters high has become a prominent symbol of the Bund, with nine suites in Britain, Italy, India, Germany, France, the United States, Japan, West and China.

Sassoon House is a 10-story building (partially 13 floors) built by Chinachem Real Estate Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of British-owned New Sassoon Foreign Company, with an investment of 2.4 million yuan. It is 77 meters high and is the tallest building on the Bund, with a construction area of 36317 square meters. In 1872, Elias Sassoon, a British Jew, founded the New Sassoon Foreign Bank in Mumbai. In 1877, he came to Shanghai to set up a branch and purchased the real estate of Qiongji Foreign Trading Company at No. 20 on the Bund (11 acres and 7 cents). The demolition of the old house began in April 1926 and became a new building on September 5, 1929. The building's architectural style is Art Deco, and its 19-meter-high dark green pyramidal copper roof has become another prominent symbol of the Bund for many years. The designer is the famous Gonghe Foreign Firm. The Cathay Hotel, Shanghai's top luxury hotel at that time, was opened in the West Hall on the ground floor and on the 4th to 9th floors, with 9 national-style rooms. The East Hall on the ground floor is rented to ABN Amro and Belgian Bank, and the top floor is Sassoon's own luxury residence.

In 1929, Art Deco architecture was just emerging in the West. The Sassoon Building was a popular Chicago academic design method in the United States at that time. From body shape, composition, to decorative details, they have been greatly simplified. The 19-meter dark green square cone at the top is the historical turning point of the Bund architecture. It marks the Bund's transformation from neoclassicism to Art Deco.

The gem roof is 19 meters long, which is almost 1/4 of the entire building. Opposite is now Chen Yi Square. Of course, it was not Mr. Chen at the beginning. It was a British governor or something. It was destroyed by Japan's invasion of China, and a statue of Chen Yi was placed after liberation.

The emerald top has always been an eye-catching and iconic presence in the Peace Hotel, but why is it green? -- In fact, it was yellow and copper at first. Copper would oxidize. In the wind and rain, it gradually became mottled copper rust green. In the end, it was painted all green to look good ~ This source was also unexpected

Historical moment: From 29 to 52 years, after its completion in 29 years, it was at the highest level in the Far East. The facilities in Great Xia were extremely luxurious. Almost everything was imported from the West. It was the most beautiful and luxurious hotel in the Far East. It attracted some dignitaries and some celebrities from the aristocratic families at that time, and some movie stars such as Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Huang Liushuang all stayed in this hotel; It is said that this hotel was ranked among the best in the world at that time. It gathered goods from all over Europe and the United States. Every room had an indoor phone and 24-hour hot water. It was very impressive at that time. In addition, Chinachem cathay is now translated as Cathay, which actually means Khitan or Huaxia in ancient European, which means China. In 1940, the Japanese began to target the Anglo-American Concession countries, and the land of these countries within countries began to be occupied, and Sassoon Bactria was also responsible. After occupying Sassoon Bactria, they used it as a place of house arrest, locking up some big bosses from Shanghai and along Haiti. Although they had food and drink, and the Chinachem Hotel also provided high-quality services, their lives were completely lost.

In 1941, after the outbreak of the Pacific War, all Sasun's real estate in Shanghai was confiscated as enemy property by the Japanese and puppet governments. After the defeat of the Japanese army, although Viktor Sassoon gradually recovered his property, the golden age of business had passed, so he wanted to withdraw and gradually withdrew funds overseas. Later, the building was acquired by Kong Xiangxi's Shanxi Yuhua Bank. In 1949, after the liberation of Shanghai, Sassoon Foreign Bank was unable to make ends meet. Later, after coordination by the Shanghai City Government, it agreed to use Sassoon Building as an asset to repay the land taxes, management fees, utilities, employee wages, etc. owed by the foreign bank.

After 1945, the Japanese left, and the 100-year contract of the concession expired. When those big overseas bosses saw that their country was stable and Shanghai, China, was not a place to stay for a long time, they returned to their hometowns; those rich mainland businessmen basically went to Hong Kong, Nanyang and other places to develop; After 1949, the government introduced some policies such as property tax, real estate tax, etc., which had a great impact on Chinachem Hotel. There was no high-end consumption and income could not make ends meet. Its operations went from bad to worse. In 1952, due to insolvency, the entire building was transferred to the People's Government. Later, it became the seat of the Shanghai City Government, where Chen Yi, Pan Hannian and others worked.

52-56 In 1956, it was a government office. In 1956, the Shanghai City government moved its office to the Bund, which is today's Pudong Development Bank. It was restored to a hotel. At this time, the Chinachem Hotel was renamed Peace Hotel, based on the International Peace Conference held in 1955, and renamed it Peace Hotel. In 1965, after the original Palace Hotel at No. 19 on the Bund was merged into the North Building (No. 20 on the Bund) and South Building (No. 19 on the Bund) of the Peace Hotel respectively.

Since April 1, 2007, Peace Hotel has suspended room booking business to prepare for the comprehensive closure and renovation that will begin in the first half of the year. After renovation in 2007, the south building was leased to swatch Group for a 30-year lease. The ground floor is home to four major watch brand stores. There are 27 rooms upstairs, but it is closed to the public. Only world-renowned artists are invited to stay for free and leave their works.

07-10 Pre-Expo decoration. On July 28, 2010, after three years of renovation and a cost of HK$500 million, the century-old landmark building in Shanghai Beach and the Peace Hotel, once known as the "First Building of the Far East", officially reopened for business. Although the renovated hotel retains the "Peace Hotel" in its Chinese name, its English name has been changed to "Fairmont Peace Hotel."

The "CIIE Feast" and the "Magnolia Blooming·Enamel Color" series of tableware were presented at the state banquet of the CIIE. The "CIIE Feast" tableware uses gold paste imported from Germany, combined with complex and orderly craftsmanship and embossed techniques to present a well-organized and luxurious appearance. The "Magnolia Blooming·Enamel Color" tableware adopts the "Enamel Color" process used in traditional clocks and watches

The hemispherical top cover of the table porcelain cold dish platter is unique. There is a symmetrical Shanghai Shikumen pattern in the front and back. The surrounding area is decorated with classic buildings on both sides of the Pujiang River and the Shanghai city flower white jade orchid pattern. It is simple and elegant, making it an eye-catching instrument.

The invitation letter also looks like Shikumen
