Zhenru Temple is located at No. 399 Lanxi Road, Zhenru Town Street, Putuo District, Shanghai. It covers an area of nearly 20 acres and has a building area of 1370 square meters. It was originally named "Wanshou Temple" and commonly known as the "Great Temple." Zhenru Temple has been rebuilt here by monk Miao Xin in the seventh year of Yanyou of the Yuan Dynasty (1320) for nearly seven hundred years

Zhenru Temple is an ancient Zen temple. At that time, the temple was very fragrant, so the surrounding area of the temple gradually developed into towns, which continues to the present Zhenru Town; therefore, Zhenru Temple came first, and then Zhenru Town.

This temple built in the Yuan Dynasty was expanded again during the Hongwu and Hongzhi dynasties of the Ming Dynasty and was once in a grand state. During the Anti-Japanese War, the temple was destroyed, leaving only the temple hall built in the Yuan Dynasty and in ruins. The current temple has undergone many renovations and expansions. In 1959, Zhenru Temple became a cultural relics protection unit in Shanghai City, and in 1996, it was promoted to the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. It was officially opened in 1992.

The beam under the forehead of the main hall of Zhenru Temple is said to be the inscription at the time of the temple's completion. This double-hooked intaglio inscription is consistent with documentary records, thus confirming that this unpretentious small hall in Putuo District is the earliest surviving wooden structure in Shanghai, and it is also a precious early relic in Jiangnan.

New Shanmen Archway, Tianwang Hall, Yuantong Hall, Sutra Building, Buddha Hall, Fusheng Hall, etc. facing east have been built in the temple. The original Laoshan Gate (No. 15 Siqian Street) across the river has been closed and preserved. The wooden temple plaque hanging on the old Shanmen Archway has been closed.

Lao Shanmen is located at No. 399 Lanxi Road, Zhenru Town Street, Putuo District, Shanghai. In the middle, Zhao Puchu, President of the Buddhist Association of China, wrote three big ink characters for "Zhenru Temple"

On the left and right sides of the gate, there is no desire for liberation and no mutual liberation, the wooden gate and the dragon on the ground.

The Xinnian Buddha Hall is cleverly connected by the street building and the east wing, making it an integrated body. All buildings are based on the style of the Yuan Dynasty Hall, with blue tiles and white walls, single eaves on a mountain top and dragon roof style. All decorations are based on the natural color woodwork structure. The entire building complex has flying eaves and raised corners, simple and dignified. The main hall of Zhenru Temple was built in the Yuan Dynasty. It has three rooms wide and deep. The internal structure is extremely complex and has been repaired many times in history.

During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1398), monk Daoxin and during the Hongzhi period (1488-1505), monk Fallei, rebuilt the temple twice in the 20th year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1894). It was initiated by Yang Yaowen, Gan Shilin and others. Together with Shanghai Shousheng nunnery monks Nian 'an and Nian Lun launched a fund-raising campaign to repair the original hall. The existing main structures such as beams, columns, and arches and most of the components are original objects of the Yuan Dynasty. They are one of the few preserved Yuan Dynasty buildings in Buddhist temples in my country

The first entrance to the south is the newly built imitated Yuan-style Tianwang Hall, which was completed in November 1993 and completed in 1994. The Tianwang Hall is a three-bay single-eared mountain top with a unique temple. It is named after the "Tusa Inner Courtyard." In the Tianwang Hall, a bronze cast statue of Maitreya, clay sculptures of the four great kings and two secret traces of Vajra (commonly known as the "Two Generals of Humph"), and a wooden statue of Wei Tuo.

Crossing the Tianwang Hall is the temple atrium, with two ginkgo trees on the left and right

The one in the west was planted by the monks who founded the temple at that time. It is the same age as the ancient temple and is more than 700 years old. It is also like a real treasure. Nowadays, the ancient trees are full of green shade and vitality, and are protected by fences. On the fence, red knots of wishing made by good men and women are often tied to pray for peace and happiness.

It was winter when I went there. If I wanted to truly appreciate the beauty of ancient ginkgo trees, I would like to see the beauty of ancient ginkgo trees in autumn when the golden ginkgo trees were in full bloom and hidden among the Buddhist temples. It was a rare beauty in the temple.

It is said that this tree has had an unusual experience. During the Cultural Revolution, because the ancient temple was destroyed and abandoned, the ancient ginkgo trees were also affected and gradually withered. They had not seen green branches and green leaves for many years, and people thought that the tree was beyond saving. In 1992, Master Miaoling was ordered to stay in and revitalize the ancient temple. The incense in the temple rekindled. The ancient trees seemed to be enlightened by humanity, rejuvenated, sprouted and sprouted again, demonstrating the miracle of Buddhism. For a time, believers sang it and called it the "Tree of God". Because more and more people bowed and made wishes in front of the tree, it became known as the "Wish Tree".

Shanghai City Ancient and Famous Wood Monument, Ginkgo No. 0067, 650 years old, first-level protection

As soon as I entered from the inner courtyard, I saw the Yuan Dynasty Hall, the treasure of Zhenru Temple. It is one of the best preserved wooden temples of the Yuan Dynasty in Jiangnan and the earliest existing wooden structure in Shanghai. It has great historical value and is listed as a national cultural relic. The Yuan Dynasty Hall, the treasure of Zhenru Temple, maintains the Yuan Dynasty single eaves and mountain top structure of the Yuan Dynasty. The roof roof, the figures on the corner, animal shapes and other components are drawn and renovated with reference to the Yuan Dynasty architectural catalog. Provided in the Dragon Hall on the ground in front of the Yuan Dynasty Hall

A 1.2-meter-high round bluestone lotus platform is set in the center of the Yuantong Hall. The middle of the lotus platform is surrounded by a diamond pestle as a pillar, and is equipped with a deep embossed of the eight parts of the dragon. On the lotus platform, a 5.2-meter-high white marble four-sided Guanyin statue invited from Singapore is enshrined. It weighs 3.5 tons. The crown sculpture has five directions and five Buddhas. It is carved from a piece of whole jade and is very precious. The central caisson of the chessboard ceiling of the main hall is shaped by a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. It means that Guanyin Bodhisattva uses thousands of eyes to see and thousands of hands to protect and transform all living beings. Around the caizhou well is surrounded by a wooden carving thirty-two should body pattern as an inscription, forming a canopy. The walls of the hall are inlaid with twenty-eight stone carvings of Guanyin Bodhisattva with different expressions. Above it is an inscription titled "Guanyin Bodhisattva's General Gate Goods" written by Zhao Pu.

Behind the Yuantong Hall is the Zhenru Pagoda Courtyard, a 51-meter-high nine-level square pagoda imitating the Song and Yuan style. It is dignified, towering into the clouds and extremely spectacular. The pagoda was officially started in September 1998 and took one year and three months to complete. On December 24, 1999, Zhenru Temple held the inauguration ceremony of Zhenru Pagoda. The style of the tower is very harmonious with the entire temple architecture. Therefore, the completion of the tower not only adds a finishing touch to the appearance of Zhenru Temple, but also adds a landmark landscape to the tourism, commerce and community of Zhenru Ancient Town.

It is like a pagoda, with nine outer floors and ten inner floors. Including the underground palace, a total of eleven floors. Zhenru Temple is the most popular temple in Shanghai that worships the real relics of the Buddha. On November 14, 2004, Elder Miao Ling and his party personally rushed to Pudong International Airport to specially welcome the real relics of the Buddha into the temple and provide them with their salaries to walk in the underground palace of the Buddha Pagoda.

Someone wrote an article specifically titled as true as a pagoda: "The majestic pagoda is as true as a pagoda, like a giant dragon soaring into the clouds. The two black marbles in the lotus pond are longans, the Buddhist buildings are dragon whiskers, the two osmanthus trees are dragon horns, the pagoda is the dragon body, and the cloud path in front of the tower is dragon scales."

There are many lion cubs and Bodhisattva cubs in front of the Zhenru Tower, which also means to protect the Zhenru Tower and bring good luck

On both sides of the stage steps, there are imitation Tang Sumeru stone lanterns. The stone lanterns are beautifully carved and contain the meaning of wonderful heights and brightness. The lanterns are 3.5 meters high and surround the tower. There are a total of eight lanterns.

There is a green stone tablet erected in 2002 (the eighth day of April, the year of Renwu) on the left and right sides of the courtyard in front of the tower. On the left side is the monument of "Zhenru Tower" and on the right side is the monument of "Rebuilding Zhenru Temple".

There is a circle of prayer wheels arranged around the square tower, a total of 108. They turn clockwise along the square tower, praying for the blessings of the Bodhisattva in everything.

The lion on the side is the patron saint of Zhenru Tower. There are a total of 108 prayer wheels under Zhenru Tower.

Behind the Zhenru Pagoda, the Zhenru Zhangshi and the Sutra Pavilion Pavilion are three-story wooden double-eaves Sutra Pavilion, with five rooms wide on each level. The first floor is the Zhenru Zhangshi Pavilion, decorated with natural wood. The interior has a complete set of mahogany Buddhist seats., chair and tea table and other furniture are simple, solemn and antique. The second and third floors are places where all kinds of scriptures are collected. There are more than 12,000 volumes of Buddhist scriptures, including more than ten versions of the Buddhist scriptures and more than 1,000 calligraphy and paintings by celebrities. It is a quiet and auspicious place to teach scriptures, promote Dharma, write books, and establish lectures.

The entire Sutra Depository uses natural wooden doors, wooden windows, and wooden guardrails and columns, which is very solemn.

The left and right sides of the Tianwang Hall start from the two-story bell tower and the drum tower. On the east side, there are the bell tower, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Manjusri Hall, the Medicine Master Hall, the Buddha Reading Hall and the drum tower on the west side of the Dongxiang Complex Corridor. In turn, there are Jialan Hall, Samannah Hall, Jieyin Hall and Zen Hall.

To the west of the main building of Zhenru Temple, there is a 200-meter-long wooden calligraphy and painting stele corridor built along the east bank of the Taopu River. In the northern section of the corridor, various forms of pagoda-style, plug-style, drum type, etc., diversified stone tablets rich in Buddhist charm are inlaid.

Through sorting out the thousand-year cultural context of Buddhism, selecting its essence as the theme, and combining the writings of many famous artists in ancient and modern times, the topic has a high ornamental effect on Buddhist culture and art. Stele Corridor Newly built stele corridors are rare nowadays, unless the ancient stele corridor shows that the abbot has vision. Various contemporary Zen calligraphy and painting works hang on the inside of the porch eaves. This Buddhist cultural corridor is a special highlight of Zhenru Temple.

The southern section of the corridor is lined with 13 ancient clocks from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty to the Republic of China.

The pigeons in the temple are the most spiritual. People can understand you when they speak. Flying to you to prove that you are a good person.

There is an irregular belt here, with a carefully designed Zen garden with rockery and flowing water, curved bridges, round balls, flower stands and a life-saving pond. The entire landscape represents a harmonious and complete artistic conception.

A corridor building has been built along the Taopu River to the north of Zhenru Temple.

A Zhenru Bridge was built at the junction of Taopu River and Liyuanbang.

Zhenru Temple is located in a busy area but is peaceful. It is a blessing spot for pilgrims who like tranquility.
