Pudong Art Museum faces the historical buildings on the Bund. It is located on the first line of Lujiazui Riverside, close to the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai International Convention Center, with a total construction area of 40590 square meters. It is divided into 4 floors above ground and two floors below ground, including 13 exhibition halls of varying sizes. In addition to the two "mirror halls" facing the Bund, the 30-meter "Exhibition Hall X" running through the fourth floor is also one of the features. The green space on the east side becomes an art park extending from the art museum. It is also a lawn park where major outdoor activities such as music festivals and art festivals are held. It extends to the Huangpu River in the west and is combined with the landscape planning along the river and the east bank connection project.

Jean Nouvel, a famous French architect and Pritzker Prize winner, tried to create a space for art display through a series of "presented permutations" created by the Pudong Art Museum. He believes that the poetic dimension is particularly important in the expression of Pudong Art Museum. Architecture and art exist forever in dialogue, and art and poetry constantly polish each other's meaning in architecture. He adopted the concept of "Domain" in his design, hoping that the audience's visit would begin from the moment they stepped into the surrounding scenes of the building."I hope that the Pudong Art Museum is like a sculpture quietly integrated on the vast land. When people look at it, don't think it's an independent building, but it continues with the land, scenery and space sketches and naturally connects together. This ambiguity is something I deliberately want to create. I am playing an interactive game with the Huangpu River and the surrounding space." The main materials for the facade and floor of the building are Shandong Baima marble. Through different polishing processes, different textures are built, creating a sense of harmony and unity between the building and the surrounding landscape. The indoor light design adopts a combination of natural light and artificial light. It is hoped to create three natural light modes for the exhibition experience: full darkness, all-day light and partial blocking filter, which can be set according to different requirements of the exhibition, so as to provide the freedom of creation and display for curators and artists. Various possibilities.

As soon as you approach the art museum, you feel it is a work of art. In addition to regular exhibition halls, Pudong Art Museum also has several unique special exhibition halls. The central exhibition hall is located in the central area of the art museum, running from the first underground floor to the fourth floor above ground. There is also a lifting platform at a corner of the bottom. In this "giant" exhibition hall, visitors can get different perspectives and viewing experiences of the same work of art on different floors. On the side of the building facing the Bund are the two iconic special display spaces of the Pudong Art Museum-Glass Hall. Both spaces are equipped with high-reflection LED screens on the entire surface, and the design concept is taken from the "fourth dimension" proposed by artist Duchamp. The mirror hall itself forms two long and narrow display spaces, which can house installation art and display multimedia art works, while the high-transparent mirror can also perfectly reflect the scene of the Bund across the Huangpu River.

Light: Tate Collection Exhibition

The opening exhibition "Light: Tate Collection Exhibition" is the first exhibition project jointly between Pudong Art Museum and Tate Art Museum and will be open to the public from July 8 to November 14, 2021. The Tate Museum has a British national art collection from 1500 to the present and an international museum of modern and contemporary art collection. The exhibition brought this time takes "light" as the theme clue and explores how artists use the contrast of light and dark, cold and warm colors in natural and artificial environments in every imaginable medium, learn from science, and tap the depth of imagination., try to capture the short-lived effects of light and use the emotional association of light to create touching works. The exhibition selects more than 100 precious collections from the Tate Museum, from romantic painters 'mastery of light and shadow and Impressionist painters' direct depiction of light as the theme, to experimental photography in the early 20th century, to the use of light as a medium to create a more modern immersive light and shadow environment.

Cai Guoqiang: Long journey and return

As the first appointed artist of the Pudong Art Museum, Cai Guoqiang specially created a large-scale spectacle installation "Encounter with the Unknown" in the central exhibition hall of the Pudong Art Museum, and brought a special exhibition "Cai Guoqiang: Journey and Return". "Encounter with the Unknown" is based on the natural cosmology of the Mayan civilization. It uses the simple form of the hand-built Mexican Fireworks Tower and uses computer-controlled painting of light to create a "cosmic tree" and space-time glue "that connects ancient and modern China and foreign countries" Cai Guoqiang: The special exhibition "Journey and Return" originated from Cai Guoqiang's "One-Person Journey to the History of Western Art" in recent years-holding exhibitions at important art museums in the world to dialogue with the history of Western art represented in his collection. Shanghai is Cai Guoqiang's first port to leave his hometown. He has grown up youth and has been destined to this day.
