【 Written in front 】
There is heaven above, Suzhou and Hangzhou below, and a Zhouzhuang in the middle.
I have long seen the water towns of Jiangnan in my dreams, heard of Zhouzhuang Shuangqiao, but have never truly experienced what it means to have a kind of life called Zhouzhuang
Zhouzhuang, which has a thousand year history and cultural heritage, is located in the hinterland of a water town in Jiangnan, between Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. The town is located in the state of Ze, surrounded by water on all sides, and requires boats and boats to travel within a short distance. It maintains a typical Jiangnan water town style and is renowned both domestically and internationally.
Three parts are water, two parts are bridges, and the remaining half are streets. This is the 900 year old water town of Zhouzhuang.
Clear slate roads and old houses facing the water, wandering through the ancient Jiangnan, savoring the water town of 900 years old.
Dressed in Hanfu, shuttling through dreamy water towns and wandering through ancient buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Clear wind and bright moon, sparse shadows and fragrant fragrance.
I say the nights in Zhouzhuang are beautiful, but you say I am beautiful
The night in Zhouzhuang is charming, with paintings everywhere. On the moon in South Lake, the sound of paddles and the shadows of lights, the twinkling stars, the ancient bridges, water alleys, old houses, and the shadows of lights all seem to be dressed in colorful neon clothes, especially moving.
The ancient Shuangqiao is not only an oil painting by Yifei's pen, but also a vivid night painting at this moment.
The sound of rowing under the bridge is babbling, the waves are swaying, and the shadows of the boat are swaying.
Between light and shadow, I say Zhouzhuang is beautiful, but you say I am beautiful.
Night Drama
Listening to night opera in the ancient theater, accompanied by the beautiful night, listening to a Kunqu opera, singing in a water mill, singing softly and lightly, inside and outside the theater, is all about life.
The people of Zhouzhuang love to listen to opera, and Shen Wansan and his in laws Gu Aying are famous Kunqu opera fans. In the Qingfeng Mingyue Zhouzhuang Pear Garden, appreciating Kunqu Opera, the "ancestor of all kinds of opera", with elegant and gorgeous lyrics of "Huansha Ji" and elegant and graceful melodies of "Peony Pavilion", is the most popular program here.
Immersed in the play, time quietly passes without realizing it, Jiangnan's tenderness flows like water.
Light and shadow tell stories, and the night writes long poems.
Rain Alley and Flower Alley, Pink and Daisy Splendor
Strolling through the rain and flower alleys with oil paper umbrellas, one person, one cat, and thousands of petals express endless longing. Walking among the flowers, pink and white, it turns out that longing is so beautiful and quiet.
When you enter the alley, you will meet the lilac girl you have thought of countless times at the corner.
A windowsill is projected from the wall, and the shadow of flower branches swaying gently in the breeze hits the tightly closed window. Petals fluttering in waves dance with the wind; The candlelight reflected a girl approaching, gently pushing open the window. A cute cat was sleeping soundly, while the lilac girl picked up a book, one person and one cat. Against the backdrop of the gentle breeze and petals, it appeared particularly peaceful.
People walk among flowers, and scenery grows from them. The flowing water of flowers is drifting and flowing into the colorful ocean, blending into the entire environment. In this psychedelic night, it feels like stepping into another time and space, running, laughing, and letting the hem of the skirt dance. Run towards the original self.
Take an umbrella to Zhouzhuang, and time will freeze in the ink painting Zhouzhuang in Jiangnan.
This is a lighting display area with the theme of Flower Alley and Rain Alley, built from the ancient town of Fuhong Bridge to Zhenfeng Bridge. Strolling through it, savoring the cultural atmosphere of water town life, and using new media fusion techniques such as light and shadow, installation, and interaction to illuminate Zhouzhuang.
Night Tour
Taking a boat night tour may be the most immersive experience. Accompanied by the sound of oars and the shadows of lights, the distant history and colorful reality of the ancient town ripple in the waves stirred by bamboo poles and wooden paddles.
Enjoy the dreamy night view of the water town amidst the microwave turbulence. The lake bay, water alleys, small bridges, old streets, ancient houses, and famous temples are all visible.
On the swaying boat, groups of tourists pass through the dreamy night of the water town. In a blink of an eye, they smile at each other. Who will you meet on the streets and alleys?
The boat girl's song is in the soft tone of Wu Nong, delicate and clear. In a daze, it is unclear whether it is in a certain play or a dream in Jiangnan.
The bamboo pole and wooden paddle stirred the water waves and also stirred the heartstrings.
On the moon, South Lake lies on a long bridge, with bright moonlight and scattered stars. This is the most peaceful and poetic life. Moonlight and gentle water waves intertwine, do you also have the longing for "the thoughts of the sea bass"?
The people of Zhouzhuang live by the river, using boats as horses. In the past, almost every household had a small boat. On the side adjacent to the river, wealthy households often have water wall doors. Below the water door is the dock, and there are also stone pillars next to the dock that anchor ships. Now in Zhouzhuang, sitting on a gurgling rowing light boat is still the best way to experience the water town life. Amidst the hazy water color, one stumbles into the dreams of the Zhouzhuang people.
Zhang Yimou's film "Shake Shake, Shake to Grandma's Bridge" was filmed in Zhouzhuang. Sitting on the boat, we hummed songs and savored the fragrance of Grandma's tea, watching the night slowly darken. In the tranquil West Bay, boats and fishing boats were moored in Zhouzhuang's water town. Small boats embrace here and stay here. The scattered lights on the fishing boat exuded a hazy beauty at that time, which was a water town version of "Night Mooring at Maple Bridge".
【 Zhenfeng Twelve Palaces · Recreation of Suzhou in the Past 】
There is also a street hidden in Zhouzhuang that gathers "experts from all walks of life" - Zhenfeng Folk Culture Street. It preserves the historical relics, cultural imprints, lifestyle, and local sentiment of Zhouzhuang to the greatest extent possible.
It is represented by the "Zhenfeng Twelve Workshops": Tubu Workshop, Bamboo Weaving Workshop, Yuanfengshun Liquor Workshop, Tofu Workshop, Su Embroidery Art House, Iron Shop Workshop, Brick Workshop, Shoe Art Workshop, Nuclear Carving Workshop, Xi Art Workshop, Shaving Workshop, and Chenyun Furnace Incense. The craftsmen in each workshop are hidden experts.
The grandfather of Tiepu Fang said, "I started making iron when I was thirteen years old, and I have been making iron for 70 years..."
How many people still persist in doing something well in their lifetime.
I hope that the skills that slowly disappear in time can be preserved and passed down.
The aroma of the wine in the distillery attracts us from afar. "A vat of wine, after fermentation and sedimentation, can finally be tasted, taking a total of four years." The brewing process of Yuan Fengshun is inherited by his family, starting from the Daoguang era, and the aroma of the wine has drifted for two hundred years.
In the yard, hundreds of cleaned celadon vases were neatly arranged, with a full vat of snow-white, fragrant new glutinous rice soaked in water. After nearly ten ancestral brewing processes, including soaking rice, steaming rice, spreading rice, placing it in a vat, raking it open, pressing it, making it clear, frying wine, and bottling it, the "Wansan Yellow Wine" and "October White" with a water town flavor were brewed. "The white wine brewed with glutinous rice is clear in color and delicious in taste. It is best brewed in October of the lunar calendar, so it is called October White."
Continuing to walk on this street, in the early morning, the morning light is pouring in inch by inch, and the craftsmen in the workshop still follow the old tradition. Amidst the hustle and bustle, it seems to recreate the grandeur of a major town outside Suzhou.
When you're tired from strolling, go to the Jubin Building to have tea and listen to the play. This is a Pingtan tea house, backed by Shuishui Street, with an ancient and simple environment. Suzhou Pingtan has a long history and was quite popular during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The Jubin Building is equipped with a dedicated Pingtan performance platform, two chairs, a desk, three stringed instruments on the upper hand, and a pipa instrument on the lower hand. The performance of handsome men and beautiful women in Pingtan has taken Jubin Building to an artistic level. A pot of grandma tea, a few plates of tea snacks, family and friends, sitting around a table, chatting to relieve fatigue, and enjoying listening to Pingtan. Classic songs such as "Good South of the Yangtze River", "Dai Yu Buries Flowers", "Beautiful the Taihu Lake Lake", "Du Shiniang" and so on are very pleasant.
Shen Ting, the Most Important Residential Area in Jiangnan
In Zhouzhuang, don't miss listening to the story of Jiangnan tycoon Shen Wansan. This Shen Hall was built by Shen Wansan's descendants.
Shen Ting is located on Nanshi Street on the south side of Fu'an Bridge, and is known as the "most beautiful residential building in Jiangnan". It is a must-have residential building for tourists visiting Zhouzhuang and Shuixiang.
The main hall was named "Songmao Hall", and the Shen family hoped for a wide source of wealth, like evergreen pine and cypress. These three characters were written by Zhang Jian, the last top scorer in the late Qing Dynasty.
Shen Wansan's ancestral home is Nanxun, Huzhou, Zhejiang. When he was a child, his father Shen You and his family moved from Nanxun to Zhouzhuang. When he first arrived at Zhouzhuang, he started by farming and accumulated a certain amount of funds. As he grew up, Shen Wansan had a very flexible business mind. He used the water conservancy conditions of Zhouzhuang to transport the abundant silk, porcelain, and other goods in this area to Nanyang, and also transported foreign jewelry to China for sale. In the past, it was called "Tongfan". In fact, in terms of international trade, Shen Wansan's wealth can be described as "wealthy as a country". In the legend of Shen Wansan, there is a treasure trove that is said to contain endless wealth.
Shen Ting Walking Horse Tower is a unique architectural form of Jiangnan residential architecture, with corridors surrounding it for easy access. Due to the connected towers, even horseback riding can be done inside, hence the name Walking Horse Tower. The Zouma Tower is about 200 meters long and has 45 houses of different sizes. It has six entrances from the wall gate tower to the small hall building, forming a "Hui" shaped pattern. Due to its large scale, it is known as the "unique residence of Jiangnan".
The second floor mainly showcases a water town style bridal chamber, a grand Qiangong bed, an embroidered room, and a mysterious blind date window. There are two windows on each side of the walls. If a young man comes to the Shen family for a blind date, Miss Shen may not be able to come downstairs to receive him. If she wants to see the other person's appearance, she can run to the second floor and open a small slit to take a peek. If she is satisfied, she can throw an embroidered ball. If she is not satisfied, she can close the window. From this point, it can be seen that the children of wealthy families like the Shen family had some autonomy and were relatively democratic at that time.
The value of Shen Ting lies in its fact that it is not an official residence, but a residential building. Such a large scale of residential building, which has been preserved for over 200 years, is extremely rare in the Jiangnan area.
In the seventh restaurant, you can see several tables of wine and food. These are the famous Eight Bowls of Wansan Family Banquet, and the middle dish is Wansan Hoof. So why is it called "Wansan Hoof" instead of "Pig Hoof"? Originally, Shen Wansan and Zhu Yuanzhang lived in the same dynasty. If the Shen family ate "pig trotters", wouldn't it be that they would gnaw on the emperor's legs every day? In the past, emperors had surnames that were taboo. In the Ming Dynasty, emperors were all surnamed Zhu, and "Zhu" had the same pronunciation as "pig", so Shen Wansan named him Wan Santi.
Shen Ting Restaurant -338 Bowls
Nowadays, Wan San Hoof is a symbol of reunion. When guests come to the house during holidays and festivals, they will definitely have this dish. The saying goes, "No hoof, no feast.". When you come to Zhouzhuang, you must also taste it. If you want to say that the authentic flavor is from the eight bowls of the Wansan Family Banquet at the Shenting Restaurant in Zhouzhuang.
Shenting Restaurant has a long history, formerly known as Shenting Dayetang. It is said that descendants of Shen Wansan often hold banquets and prepare delicious dishes here to entertain guests. Now it is also the most distinctive and local style restaurant in Zhouzhuang.
The 338 large bowl is mainly composed of: Wan San Ti, San Wei Yuan, Fragrant Fried Golden Bricks, Braised Eel Tube, Snail Stuffed Pork, Braised Mandarin Fish, Oil Bu Stuffed Pork, and Rural Eel and Carp Vegetables.
Ten thousand three hooves
"Fat but not greasy, crispy but not rotten". Its workmanship is quite exquisite, requiring several hours of stewing, steaming, and simmering, combined with more than ten ingredients, to form the characteristics of hoof color, sauce red, fragrant, and full appearance. To be honest, I have been eating a lot of Wan San Ti from various restaurants in Zhouzhuang recently, and I still love Shen Ting's restaurant the most.
San Wei Yuan
In Zhouzhuang, San Wei Yuan is usually cooked together with grass chicken, and its name is "Grass Chicken San Wei Yuan Soup". It means boiling San Wei Yuan in chicken soup, with a thin skin and tender filling, and a delicious taste.
Fragrant Fried Gold Bricks
Fry the dried tofu until it is crispy and golden yellow, and then add a special sauce. Because of its golden color, it is similar to golden bricks, so it is called fragrant fried golden bricks.
Braised Eel Tube in Brown Sauce
As the name suggests, this braised eel tube is made from eels. After slaughtering the eels alive, they are washed and cut into sections, and then braised.
Snail stuffed meat
It is said that the fresh snail meat needs to be dug out, then minced and finely chopped with pork leg meat, and seasoned with onions, ginger, cooking wine, etc. Finally, it is stuffed into the snail shell for cooking. This process is a bit complicated, so most locals only make this dish on important days.
Braised Mandarin Fish in Brown Sauce
The method of braising Mandarin fish in brown sauce is braising it, but the head and tail of the fish should be made to look like ingots, which means attracting wealth and treasure.
Oil filled pork belly
This is a home cooked dish in Zhouzhuang, where the essence of pork, leg meat, and seasoning are finely chopped and mixed with wild vegetables before being cooked in soy sauce.
Farmhouse Eel and Carp Vegetable
Farmhouse eel and carp, also known as Zhouzhuang Abacai, wash the tender moss of rapeseed with clean water, sun dry it in the sun, and then marinate it in a small pot (b è ng). Seal the pot mouth with bamboo leaves and yellow mud, invert it in a pottery basin to prevent air leakage, and it can be consumed after a few months.
Some of these dishes are already very ordinary and have entered our home cooked menu series. However, when historical and cultural elements are added, it becomes no longer ordinary. It is not just a food, but also a cultural inheritance.
If you have the opportunity to come to Zhouzhuang, be sure to eat all eight bowls.
Celebrate a Chinese New Year in Zhouzhuang
Zhouzhuang has a long history and cultural heritage, and has also formed unique water town customs here.
Coincidentally, on New Year's Day in front of the ancient archway, Xikai Village was showcased here, showcasing the most dazzling customs of the water town.
The Chinese New Year is here, and the taste of the year is palpable. Experience the traditional customs of the water town by "walking spring cows", "sacrificing spring cows", and "beating spring cows". "Beat" the good signs of the Chinese New Year and "touch" the auspicious year.
Dragon dance, lion dance, promotion, lantern decorations, colorful drums and gongs. The "Lord of Zhouzhuang" brings everyone to pray and offer greetings and wishes for 2021.
Then stroll through the streets and alleys of the ancient town, strolling around the cultural and creative museum;
Learn to write couplets with the elderly; Bring good fortune home;
As the saying goes, "Water is the master of wealth." During the Chinese New Year, of course, one should take a boat ride on the Water Wealth Road to visit Zhouzhuang, praying for blessings and good luck along the way, and experience the fortune of Zhouzhuang.
【 Xiangcun Qizhuang, Hidden in Ordinary People's Homes 】
How can there be no festive life in Zhouzhuang? In order to find memories of traditional Chinese New Year, we drove all the way to Xiangcun Qizhuang, a place only a dozen minutes away from Zhouzhuang by car.
Wearing a big red coat, Paper Cuttings, sticking window decorations, eating cakes made by Grandma, picking vegetables in the vegetable field, chasing firecrackers in the yard at night, laughing and jumping
Is this traditional Chinese New Year, with its simplicity and joy, only frozen in childhood memories and rooted in the hearts of adults?
At this moment, in Xiangcun, a row of pickled goods have already been hung on the bamboo poles next to the fence. It is the ancient method of pickling the salty fragrance, which is the most meaningful taste every winter. That is a Chinese New Year flavor that is imbued with sunshine and wind, condensing time and human emotions.
Grandma was busy living in the pastry room of Xiangcun, and suddenly, the cold winter was warmed by the warmth of this handmade pastry.
Learn to make traditional Soviet style pastries with Grandma. Jiangnan people have loved to eat pastries since ancient times, symbolizing the rise of "cake" and happiness. Although I am not from Jiangnan, I have always had a fondness for this pastry since I was young.
Pure rice fragrance, natural colors, and fresh taste. The pastry in the pastry shop is a memory of eating pastries with my grandmother when I was a child.
Xigao: But on festive occasions, such as newlyweds getting engaged, getting married, children reaching their full moon, celebrating their 100th birthday, getting married, moving to a new house, etc., Xigao is definitely indispensable. It is a joyful joy.
Plum Blossom Cake in Jiangnan: It never requires synthetic colors and spices. Purple potatoes, pumpkin, spinach, and dragon fruit are all cooked by Aunt Jiang every morning. Pour in flour and knead to create a natural color, full of a gentle and natural atmosphere.
You know what? Each pastry is steamed one by one using the steam from a pressure cooker, making it extremely precious.
Tuanzi: freshly made dumplings, green and oily, as delicate as jade. They are made with bean paste, sesame seeds, fresh meat, pickled vegetables, and shredded radish. They can be either meat or vegetarian, sweet or salty.
After eating cakes, we returned to our homestay, where we decorated our room with Paper Cuttings and window decorations. With the excitement and joy of childhood.
If you're tired, go to Xiangcun Bookstore and lazily bask in the sun while flipping through stories about the 900 year old Shuizhen and Zhouzhuang.
The homestays here are full of a sense of time, and the decoration style shuttles through different eras from the 1960s to the 2000s. We are staying at No. 3 homestay in the 1990s, which has 5 rooms and 6 beds. It was built around 1993 and is a simple and peaceful rural characteristic villa. In the yard, there is also a machine well that we saw when we were young. The whole building has a total of 5 bedrooms, making it a villa with more dimensions. It is very suitable for vacationing with family and children.
How could we miss the New Year's Eve dinner during the Chinese New Year? We gathered at the Hefengli Restaurant in the village, which is a restaurant grown in the rice fields. The ingredients were taken from the fields. In the afternoon, we just went to the vegetable field to pick vegetables, and in the evening, they served on our dining table. The vegetables of this season are just right and sweet.
Wansanti, local chicken gluten soup, braised Chenghu big fish head, fried river shrimp, and more are indispensable.
At night, firecrackers were set off in the yard, like stars in the night sky. Use the fairy wand in your hand to swipe through 2021. Like returning to childhood, filled with anticipation and hope for the future.
This Chinese New Year, I am in Zhouzhuang.
what about you?
[Tail]
When Sanmao arrived at Zhouzhuang, she said, "I have finally found the place I have been longing for for for decades. I want to come to Zhouzhuang to eat Grandma's tea, eat hairy crabs, and have a good view of the streets and alleys of my hometown.".
This is not a place that I have been haunted by my dreams, and its charm is not something that I can see enough of with my hurried pace in the past two or three days.
The life in Zhouzhuang is leisurely and inclusive. In addition to the indigenous people, travelers and new entrepreneurs live together here.
Every day, accompanied by the gentle rise of the sun and a shared love for life in the ancient town, we begin a new day of life and work.
Surrounded by a group of lakes,
Water supports a village.
The double bridge serves as the key,
The ship is parked in the center of the house
The pure joy in the world can be anticipated.
