Huli Mountain Fort is located on Huli Mountain in the east of Xiamen Island.
Facing Jinmen Island across the sea to the east, Zhangzhou is facing the sea to the south, Gulangyu is facing each other in the west, and the prosperous urban area to the north. Founded in the 20th year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1894 AD), the fort and castle cover an area of 13,000 square meters. It combines the European semi-bunker style and the structural model of China's defense positions during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, forming a scientific and reasonable defense system, retaining complete city gates, city walls, towers, guard moats, Qing military barracks, and training grounds.
Most of the fortresses are built of high-quality granite. They are valuable monuments for studying the military history of our country's coastal defense, the history of Westernization Movement and the construction technology of military engineering. The Hurishan Battery is equipped with two Krupp main guns, divided into the east and west batteries, and two auxiliary guns separated on both sides. This gun is the largest remaining artillery of the same type in the world and can be called the "World Ancient Cannon King".
In the Huli Mountain Battery Scenic Area, there is a famous landscape called "Single Tree Forest". A large banyan tree with lush branches and leaves sticks out many roots into the soil. The big roots are like columns, and the small ones are like clothes poles. They are densely packed and countless specific numbers are found.
On the city wall next to the monitoring room of the Huli Mountain Battery, tree roots pour on the wall like a waterfall, leaving "water traces". The other city wall opposite the city wall here is also covered with roots, and the highest branches are still covered with bougainvillea.
The landscape of "tree roots wrapped around walls" in Huli Mountain Fort is the most concentrated in the city. The main reason is that the banyan trees here have a long growth period. There are seven ancient and famous trees, with the longest being more than 300 years old. Between the gaps in the stones of the ancient city wall, some bird droppings containing banyan seeds often fell into it. After the banyan tree took root and germinated, the extended roots followed the city wall to find soil and nutrients.
Gulangyu is not particularly big, and people generally choose to walk.
