Gaoling District, which is less than half an hour's drive from downtown Xi'an, has always been unknown in Shaanxi. There are no particularly famous scenic spots and few tourists come here. However, in such a place that is in a "hidden state", there is a magical natural landscape. This is the source of the idiom "clear divisions".
The original meaning of clear distinction means that there are clear boundaries and clear distinctions between right and wrong. "Jing" and "Wei" respectively refer to the Jing River and Wei River, which meet in Gaoling District, northern suburbs of Xi'an. Because of the different sediment concentration of these two rivers, the water quality is also different. The clear and turbid rivers are incompatible at the intersection, showing clear and turbid water colors on the surface. There is a high scenic spot at the intersection of the two rivers, which can overlook the spectacular scene of the entire Jing River merging into the Wei River. The two rivers bypass a sandbar and merge and meet, showing a clear dividing line. As early as the Book of Songs more than 2,000 years ago, there was a record of this spectacle. Over time, we can still see this magical landscape.
Although the landscape still exists, it is very different from what it was thousands of years ago. What we see now is that the Weihe River is turbid and the Jinghe River is clear. However, according to historical records, historically, the Weihe River is clear and the Jinghe River is turbid. This is mainly because the two rivers travel through different routes. The Wei River is the largest tributary of the Yellow River, and the Jing River is the largest tributary of the Wei River. Due to various reasons such as soil and water loss and deforestation, the sediment concentration of the two rivers has changed., so there are still some differences between the landscape we see and what the ancients saw.
As a famous inland city, Xi'an is famous for its historical sites such as Terracotta Warriors, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and Daming Palace. Few people would associate Xi'an with water. However, during the Western Han Dynasty, some writers recorded that Chang 'an City was surrounded by "eight rivers", namely Jing, Wei, Chan, Ba, Feng, Lao, Yi and Yi. These "eight rivers" nourish this land with a history of thousands of years. Now, on these "eight rivers", many beautiful scenery have been built. The more familiar ones are Fenghe Wetland Park. Weihe River City Sports Park, Chanba Wetland Park, etc. The Wei River flows through the Guanzhong Plain and has nourished this land for thousands of years. It is precisely because of its rich ecological resources that many dynasties in history have chosen to establish their capitals here. The Weihe River is the veritable mother river in Shaanxi, and the Weihe River Basin has also become one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization. In ancient times, the Weihe River was abundant in water and clear in water. In the 1990s, the Weihe River suffered serious pollution. Today, after the river section reconstruction project, a 28.6-kilometer-long Weihe River landscape corridor has been built. The reeds on the bank are swaying in the wind, and waterbirds play on the sandbars, which has restored its former scenery.
"Autumn wind grows the Wei River, and fallen leaves fill Chang 'an." If you have time, you may wish to come and see this wonderful scene that integrates humanities and nature.
