National locust tree (tree age 1300 years):"locust tree" is also "Huai". The tree is tall and its pinnately compound leaves are similar to those of Robinia pseudoacacia. The flowers are light yellow and can be cooked and eaten, used as traditional Chinese medicine or dye.

Catalpa tree (800 years old): Originated in China, it is a tree of the genus Catalpa in the family Vaniaceae. According to research, catalpa trees were distributed in North China and other areas dating back to the Eocene period before the four-season glaciers. They are one of the few ancient living fossil tree species that have been preserved through the changes of prehistoric geological and geomorphic structures in China.

Among the several ancient trees in the Xiaoyan Pagoda Scenic Area, the youngest is 800 years old, and most of the ancient trees are already 1,300 years old! Time has carved their unique figure, but it has not affected their luxuriousness.

These ancient trees stand in front of the Daxiong Hall of the Xiaoyan Pagoda. On both sides of the central axis of the scenic area, you can see through the Cien Pavilion. Each tree is protected by a stone brick fence. The tree tops intersect, and the pavilions look like covers.

These national locust trees have been standing upright in the wind and rain for 1300 years. Some of their trunks have withered, but new leaves have reappeared from the side branches and side trunks. Even in the autumn when other trees began to turn yellow, they are still lush and have amazing vitality.

The 800-year-old catalpa tree in the courtyard is as precious as the locust tree. The catalpa tree is also known as Zi Tong. Han Yu said,"Looking up at He Qingqing, I can't see any threads on it." I told you all how dense it is. Touch the rough bark and you can feel the vitality in the trunk.

Standing under the shady tree and looking up, the warm autumn sun passes through the leaves, and every vein is illuminated through.

National locust tree (tree age 1100 years):"locust tree" is also "Huai". The tree is tall and its pinnately compound leaves are similar to those of Robinia pseudoacacia. The flowers are light yellow and can be cooked and eaten, used as traditional Chinese medicine or dye.

Platycladus orientalis (300 years old): Platycladus orientalis is a specialty of China and is distributed all over the country except Qinghai. Ancient trees have a long life span, often hundreds of years old or more.

I don't know whether it is due to the profound cultural context, but the ancient trees in the area of Confucius Temple, Confucian Temple, and Xi'an Stele Forest Museum are particularly dense. The dense locust trees and the vigorous Platycladus orientalis are like famous calligraphy works with sharp brushstrokes.

Many people go to the Xi'an Forest of Steles Museum for the national treasure steles, but the "living cultural relics" in the museum-ancient and famous trees-are also worth a visit.

When you walk into the gate of the Forest of Steles Museum, you can see a Platycladus orientalis tree breaking through the roof. This 300-year-old Platycladus orientalis has the momentum of "my life is mine", showing majestic vitality, tenacity and integrity.

There are also three thousand-year-old locust trees in the Forest of Steles Museum. Because the Forest of Steles Museum was built on the former site of the Confucian Temple, these three national locust trees are also called "Taimiao Ancient locust trees". Ancient trees reach the sky and steles are beside them. History seems to be in the blink of an eye.

Guanzhong Academy

National locust tree (tree age 250 years):"locust tree" is also "Huai". The tree is tall and its pinnately compound leaves are similar to those of Robinia pseudoacacia. The flowers are light yellow and can be cooked and eaten, used as traditional Chinese medicine or dye.

Gleditsia japonica (300 years old): Also known as Gleditsia japonica tree, Gleditsia japonica, etc., it can reach 30 meters high and is often cultivated in the courtyard or next to the house.

The ancients planted pines and cypresses to show their indifference to fame and fortune and their lofty aspirations. However, Guanzhong Academy was a famous institution in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, but most of the ancient trees left behind today are national locust trees.

"I don't mean to plant willows, but willows are shady." These century-old locust trees add a bit of simplicity and lush to this bookish courtyard.

In addition to the national locust tree, Guanzhong Academy also has a 300-year-old locust tree. In the season of fruit, the aroma of locust trees is tender to generations.

In addition, the most simple alleys in Beilin District, such as Fuxue Lane, Xianning Xue Lane, and Wolong Lane, have an ancient meaning and tranquility that is aloof from the world. The ancient locust trees in the alley have huge crowns like umbrellas. After a century of ups and downs, they are still full of vitality.

At present, a total of 60 ancient and famous trees have been registered and listed for protection in Beilin District, including 19 trees at the first level (18 Sophora japonica trees and 1 catalpa tree), 17 trees at the second level (12 Sophora japonica trees, 2 Platycladus orientalis, and 2 Gleditsia japonica trees), and 24 trees at the third level (1 thick shell, 6 Sophora japonica trees, 11 Platycladus orientalis, 1 Gleditsia japonica trees, and 16 wisteria). These ancient and famous trees bear witness to the historical vicissitudes of the thousand-year-old capital and tell the silent old story of the forest of steles.

Ancient and famous trees are treasures of ecological resources and witnesses of the long history and culture of the place. Protecting ancient trees means protecting our common homesickness memories. Let us understand ancient trees together, protect them, and jointly protect these urban "living cultural relics".
