Fireworks in March in Yangzhou, it can be said that every Chinese person has a dream of Yangzhou in their hearts.
So how should Yangzhou play?
The must visit attractions in Yangzhou include Shouxi Lake, Heyuan, Geyuan, Daming Temple, etc. The local admission ticket is also for these attractions, but the validity period is only two days. It's really rushed to visit these attractions within two days.
The beauty of Yangzhou requires time to slowly explore and appreciate, and the places worth visiting are not just the above attractions.
I have just returned from Yangzhou and stayed there for 6 days and 5 nights. I would like to recommend the following attractions to everyone:
1. Dingjiawan
Many tour group itineraries include Dongguan Street, which is the most famous commercial old street in Yangzhou. It is indeed worth visiting, but there are too many people.
The best way to taste the unique flavor of a city is to take a walk in those authentic residential alleys.
Dingjiawan Street is the old street with the most Yangzhou style, and the folk houses in this area are also the essence of Yangzhou old city.
Dingjiawan is near Heyuan, which is easy to find. A large memorial archway gate is very impressive. There are not many people and few tourists here, making it a great place to taste Yangzhou.
Walking on the green brick and stone streets, occasionally residents riding electric bikes and bicycles would roar past.
From time to time, you can see green plants hanging on the exterior walls of residential buildings, even the ivy on the green brick walls looks particularly beautiful.
The area around Dingjiawan used to be very prosperous. In the Qing Dynasty, the salt merchants and high-ranking officials in Yangzhou liked Dingjiawan the most, except for Dongguan Street.
So in this area, there are many historical buildings, many of which are national level cultural relics protection units!
At the end of that deep alley, it might be the residence of some high-ranking official back then.
Today, some of these historical buildings have been converted into guesthouses
Some have transformed into romantic tea rooms
Nowadays, Dingjiawan is like a retired elderly person. Here, the pace has slowed down and everything is leisurely, making it a great place to experience the slow life of Yangzhou.
Play tips:
(1) The famous Xiaopangu Garden is also located in the Dingjiawan neighborhood. There are few tourists in the garden, and the tour experience is very good. I strongly recommend visiting it, as it was the residence of the former Governor General of Liangjiang! Ticket: 20 yuan (cash only)
(2) Dawu Chengxiang and Xiaowu Chengxiang are also very flavorful.
2. Songjiacheng Sports Park
The Songjiacheng Sports Park is located next to Shouxi Lake in Yangzhou, and it is very large with an area of 38.71 hectares. Most of the tourists in the park are locals, with elderly people and parents walking their children being the main ones. This place is very beautiful and is a national 4A scenic spot. It is also free. Yangzhou people are so happy.
In ancient times, there was a saying in Yangzhou that there were three cities in one place, namely Song Dacheng, Song Jiacheng, and Baoyou City. The Songjiacheng Sports Park was built on the archaeological site of Songjiacheng. It is a scenic area that integrates ecology, leisure, sports, and culture. There are many sports facilities inside, such as fencing, archery, tennis, basketball, bowling, etc., which can be played here.
The most impressive thing to me is the antique city wall of Songjiacheng Park, which is truly magnificent. Standing in the middle of the park, looking towards the city wall gate, the trees on both sides create a feeling of a tree lined avenue against the backdrop of the city wall, which is so beautiful.
The wetlands in the park are also impressive, and strolling along them is really relaxing.
If I have time, I can wander around here all day. Don't miss Songjiacheng Park when you come to Yangzhou! When you come to visit Shouxi Lake, remember to take some time to stroll around, there will be unexpected surprises.
3. Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics Memorial Hall
When it comes to Yangzhou, one cannot ignore the famous Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.
The Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou were a group of innovative painters who were active in Yangzhou during the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty. Represented by 8 people including Jin Nong, there are a total of 15 people. The Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou advocated innovation and self-reliance, and their artistic creation was not integrated with the dominant orthodox painting school at that time. Their pioneering spirit had a strong impact on traditional conservatives and had a profound influence on the painting style of later generations.
How can you not go to the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics Memorial Hall to learn about their history when you come to Yangzhou?
There is a ginkgo tree in the memorial hall that has been around for over 700 years, shining brilliantly under the sunlight. There is also a beautiful Qionghua tree next to it, set against the backdrop of antique architecture.
There are very few tourists here, it's very quiet, sitting under an ancient tree, and they're reluctant to leave.
The location of the memorial hall used to be the Western Temple, which also housed the former residence of Jin Nong, the leader of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.
The memorial hall systematically introduces the history and culture of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, showcasing many of their works.
If you have time, why not come and appreciate calligraphy and painting, and take a look at that 700 year old ginkgo tree.
Ticket: 20 yuan
Play tips:
If you have time, you can also walk along the small alley at the entrance of the memorial hall all the way to the east. When you get to Wenhe Road, there is an old locust tree in the middle that is empty. It is the prototype tree in the dream of Nanke, which is 1200 years old.
There are still many places worth visiting in Yangzhou, especially the gardens hidden in the alleys, such as the Er Fen Mingyue Tower and Wang's Courtyard, which are waiting for you to explore.
Remember to slow down when you come to Yangzhou!
