In mid-April 2024, while participating in a self-driving tour in Jiangsu and Anhui, I once stayed at Changle Inn in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
Changle Inn is located in the Dongguan Historical District of Yangzhou, one of China's top ten famous streets. Dongguan Historical District originated from the ancient crossing of Dongguan. It is a settlement of salt merchants and a prosperous traditional commercial district in Yangzhou's history. It is also the most well-preserved ancient streets and alleys in Yangzhou. The inn is a cultural relic protection building. It is built from the Yipu owned by Li Hesheng, a money broker in the early years of the Republic of China, the Huashi Garden owned by Hua Youmei, a salt merchant in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and the Jiannan Bookstore of brothers Ma Yueguan and Ma Yuelu from Qimen, Anhui who were known as the "Two Horses of Yangzhou" during the Kang and Qian Dynasties, as well as the four ancient houses and other houses of the General Mansion of the Qing Dynasty famous Li Changle. It is an ancient architectural and residential themed boutique hotel that combines historical features, traditional characteristics, original ecology and fashion and leisure. The most famous part of Changle Inn is the Jiannan Bookstore. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
Jiannan Bookstore is located at No. 309 Dongguan Street. It is also known as the "Little Linglong Mountain Pavilion". It is a residential garden site of the salt merchants Ma Yueguan and Ma Yuelu brothers during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty. It is a famous cultural landscape in Yangzhou during the Qing Dynasty. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
Brothers Ma Yueguan and Ma Yuelu made salt a business and had rich family wealth. The two brothers were famous throughout the Jianghuai River in the early Qianlong period and were representative figures of Confucian merchants among the salt merchants. The two brothers were diligent and studious, good at poetry, made friends extensively, and loved gardening. They were called the "Two Horses of Yangzhou" at that time. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
The two had high cultural quality and were well-known poets at that time. They used their wealth to establish various cultural undertakings, and their gardens became one of the cultural activity centers of the ancient city of Yangzhou. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
The two Ma brothers "work as craftsmen, develop civil engineering, use bamboo heads and wood chips, operate at a small cost, dig wells and draw springs, and are not trivial. During this period, they have achieved success in three years." Because it is located on the south of Dongguan Street, it is called the "Street South Bookstore". The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
Around the spring of the tenth year of Yongzheng (1732), Jiannan Bookstore was completed. The completion of Jiannan Bookstore was a symbol of the prosperity of Ma's family business. The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
There are twelve scenic spots in the Bookstore on the south of the street, namely, the Small Linglong Mountain Hall, the Guanshan Tower, the Red Medicine Terrace, the Wind and the Moon, the Stone House, the Qingxiang Pavilion, the Tenghua Temple, the Book Collection Building, the Miju Corridor, the Medicine Irrigation Well, the Qifeng Grass Pavilion, and the Meiliao. The most famous one is a small Linglong mountain rock purchased from Taihu Lake. Therefore, the bookstore is also called the "Little Linglong Mountain Pavilion". The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
In his "Suiyuan Poetry Notes" by Yuan Mei, a Qing Dynasty native, he named Yangzhou Xiaolinglong Mountain Hall, Tianjin Shuixizhuang, and Hangzhou Xiaoshantang as the "three major private gardens of the Qing Dynasty." The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
Zhang Geng painted the "Picture of the Little Linglong Mountain Pavilion" in Xiushui, Zhejiang, and Ma Yuelu wrote the book "Picture of the Little Linglong Mountain Pavilion". The photo was taken at Changle Inn.
The study area is 100 square meters and has a collection of more than 3200 volumes and more than 10 types of newspapers and periodicals. The book content covers political economy, literature and art, history and military affairs, information technology, medicine and fitness, life encyclopedia and other categories, and is updated every two weeks.
