1. Preface

After retirement, I originally planned to plan and implement a foreign self-driving tour every year while I was still young and couldn't run. After I was seventy years old and couldn't drive, I would start traveling with travel agencies to China. After the United States, Canada, the three Nordic countries, and the six Balkan countries, this year's destinations are the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Denmark and northern Germany. It is planned to depart in late August for five weeks. All the strategies were completed at the beginning of the year, and I was preparing to start booking air tickets, hotels, and visa applications, but the sudden COVID-19 epidemic interrupted my plan. At first, I was hoping that the epidemic would soon pass and maybe it would make it. Sure enough, the domestic epidemic was quickly brought under control, but the foreign epidemic expanded in full swing. In June, seeing that overseas travel was impossible, I turned around and considered switching to domestic travel.

After reading the itineraries of some travel agencies, I was not very satisfied. Later, a certain XX car public account recommended a self-driving trip in Xiangxi (i.e., Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture). It felt good and began to prepare. Later, the public account successively recommended other self-driving itineraries. I chose Zhangjiajie and Enshi among them. The reason was that Zhangjiajie City and Xiangxi Prefecture belonged to Hunan Province and were adjacent to each other. Although Enshi (i.e., Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture) belonged to Hubei Province, it was adjacent to Xiangxi and connected by mountains and rivers.

There are only two months left until late August, so it is impossible to make a detailed itinerary. I just list the attractions to visit in the three places, and arrange them in an order from east to west, and then from south to north according to the geographical location. I am ready to go for a complete free trip and live wherever I go. The following is my original plan, but in fact, I didn't fully implement this plan and gave up many attractions.

Plan to return to Shanghai by September 27 at the latest

It can be seen from the above itinerary that the plan cannot be carried out on the seventh day because there is no time to collect more information, such as how long it takes to visit the attractions, how long it takes to transfer between attractions, what the road conditions are, etc.

In addition, a Guizhou Fanjing Mountain was added behind Fenghuang Ancient Town. This is because a classmate of my wife's heard that we were going to Xiangxi and specifically told us that she went to Xiangxi with a customized group two years ago, and there was Fanjing Mountain on the itinerary. I checked the map and found that it was only a little more than 100 kilometers from Fenghuang Ancient Town in western Hunan to Fanjing Mountain Scenic Area in Guizhou. It didn't take two hours to walk the highway. So Fanjing Mountain was included in the plan.

2. Preparations

Domestic travel is relatively convenient, so there is no need to do too much preparation, just prepare the car.

There are two options for self-driving: one is to take a plane or high-speed train to Zhangjiajie and then rent a car locally; the other is to drive your own car the entire journey from Shanghai and finally return to Shanghai. It should be said that each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but we ultimately chose to drive our own car the entire time. The reasons are: 1. Try to avoid public transportation, especially confined spaces such as aircraft and high-speed rail. Although the chance of infection is extremely low, I still feel a little uneasy;2. Avoid the trouble of renting a car and returning a car, especially if the itinerary is undecided, how many days to play and where to play are unknown, and it is not easy to book a car. Driving your own car is relatively free. The disadvantage is that it takes a lot of time on the way. It takes four days to make the trip back and forth, which is a bit extravagant. But for our retired elderly people, the most important thing is time. Young people have to go to work, and vacations are very valuable, so it is better to fly.

In addition, the question of what car to drive. I always drive my work car to and from work when I go to work. The car is not fixed. It is a commercial vehicle, a manual transmission Santana, and an automatic transmission Buick. I can drive whichever one I catch. After retiring, he still needed a car, so he bought a sedan sedan Citroen Sega with a displacement of 1.6 liters after living in the urban-rural fringe in the west of Shanghai. However, he usually only bought groceries and didn't even drive into the city because there was no place to park. Therefore, only more than 30,000 kilometers have been driven in seven years. My nephew (my brother and sister-in-law went with us) owns a Volvo with a 1.2-liter displacement and turbocharged. He suggested that we drive his car because we drive a lot of roads every day and automatic transmission saves more effort. Indeed, his car has absolute advantages in driving at high speeds and running long distances, but Xiangxi and Western Hubei are mountainous areas with high mountains and steep slopes, rugged roads, and poor road conditions. Turbocharging basically cannot play its role. After much thought, I decided to drive my own car.

I set off to the 4S shop for inspection and maintenance, replaced tires, brake pads and wipers, installed driving recorders and ETC, and everything was ready.

3. Travel Notes

The first day of the total itinerary is August 29, Saturday, departure day, Shanghai to Jiujiang

Our journey has begun. Today's only task is to hurry, and the destination is Jiujiang.

The journey from my home to the Four Famous Architectural Aesthetics Inn in Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie is 1277 kilometers. For young people, it is not difficult to get up early, stay late, and drive all day to reach their destination. But for the elderly, it is more difficult. It's not that it can't be done, but that it's not necessary. Moreover, excessive fatigue will also affect the next day's play, which is not worth the gain. Therefore, it was decided to stop overnight, and Jiujiang was at the halfway point of the journey, with a mileage of 649.2 kilometers.

Shanghai to Jiujiang itinerary

There was also an incident when we set out in the morning: the newly replaced wiper shaft broke as soon as we drove out of the community gate. Xin Kui bought two pairs of wipers at that time and then went home to pick them up and change them. It's really blessed by God. If it doesn't rain when we set out, when it rains heavily on the highway, a big problem will happen if the wiper breaks. Thinking about it made me feel a little scared.

Arrived in Jiujiang at about 5 p.m. and stayed at Chaoman Hotel (Jiujiang Balihu Municipal Government Store), a good mid-end business hotel with a high value for money. It is about 5 minutes 'drive from the Balihu exit of the highway, which is also relatively convenient. The Haiyun Beach Scenic Area next to Jiujiang Bali Lake (4A Scenic Area) also has good scenery.

Stop by the lake after dinner.

The food street downstairs of the hotel was affected by the epidemic and was not very popular.

Total itinerary The second day is Sunday, August 30 Jiujiangto Zhangjiajie

Continue on the road the next day. The destination is Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Four Famous Architectural Aesthetics Inn, with a mileage of 631.3 kilometers.

Jiujiang to Zhangjiajie itinerary

I received a bank message the night before, saying that our ETC card linked to the bank is a credit card and cannot be used. It must be a debit card. What a joke. Since credit cards were not allowed, there was no prompt when activating ETC. I chose a credit card but activated smoothly. I called the customer service service and followed the instructions to replace the bank card. It took a long time but failed. I had no choice but to go to Jiujiang ETC Service Center after having breakfast in the morning, planning to go to the window to recharge. I didn't expect to find the service center with great difficulty, but the door was closed and I didn't work on Sundays. I had to grit my teeth and get on the highway. When I reached the toll gate, I actually passed it smoothly, delaying an hour in vain.

Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Four Famous Architectural Aesthetics Inn is a B & B with a very strong sense of design. The room facilities are good and the service attitude is beyond reproach. However, the most important thing is that the location is particularly good. It is only a wall away from the Tianmen Mountain Park Cable Car Station. Walk for five minutes.

At the recommendation of the front desk clerk, we went to a restaurant called "Lao Stove" for dinner and tasted the local specialty dish "Sanxia Pot".

The fuel used to cook is all high-quality wood.

"Three times"

the origin of

It is said that during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Japanese pirates continued to harass the southeastern coastal areas of our country. The court sent large troops to resist the Japanese many times, but all ended in disastrous defeat. In the thirty-third year of Jiajing (1555), Shang Shu Zhang Jing submitted a petition to the court, requesting that local soldiers in western Hunan and Hubei be recruited to quell the Japanese invaders. Emperor Shizong of the Ming Dynasty agreed to petition and sent the governor Hu Zongxian to supervise it. Qin Yaozhi, the Tusi of Maogang of Yongding Wei, and his son Qin Chengkun, Xiang Hefeng of Sangzhi Si, Peng Yinan of Yongshun Si, Tian Shijue of Rongmei Si (now Hefeng of Hubei Province) were ordered to lead their soldiers on the expedition. It was the end of the lunar New Year, and Qin Yaozhi knew that it would be difficult to return, so he decided to spend the last New Year with his relatives, so he ordered:"Steam rice, cut rice, pour a large bowl of wine, and celebrate the New Year one day before going on the expedition. "Due to the tight schedule, we didn't have time to cook many dishes, so we had a pot of bacon, tofu, and radish stewed it in one pot. It was called 'mixed dish' and it was good for us to go on. This dish later evolved into a "three-pot". After the soldiers went to the front line, they quickly defeated the Japanese pirates and recovered their lost territory. Sejong personally awarded them a plaque with the inscription "Southeast Military Merits-." Secretary Zhi wrote this history:"On December 29th, the soldiers were rewarded. On New Year's Eve, the Japanese were unprepared and won a great victory. Later generations followed it, and it became a family tradition. "。

The third day of the total itinerary is Monday, August 31 Visit Tianmen Mountain Forest Park in Zhangjiajie

Get up early in the morning, check out, deposit your luggage at the front desk of the hotel, go downstairs for breakfast, and then take the cable car up the mountain.

Zhangjiajie City, formerly known as Dayong City, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province. It is located in the northwest of Hunan Province, at the junction of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau uplift and the Dongting Lake subsidence area. The middle and upper reaches of the Lishui River are connected to Shimen and Taoyuan County in the east, to Yuanling County in the south, and to Hefeng and Xuan 'en County in Hubei Province in the north. It belongs to the hinterland of the Wuling Mountains.

Zhangjiajie's landforms are complex and diverse, creating local characteristic landscapes, mainly mountains, karsts, hills, hillsides and plains. The mountainous area accounts for 76% of the total area. The most distinctive one is the quartz sandstone peak forest landform, which is rare in the world. Another outstanding manifestation of Zhangjiajie's landform is that due to the rise of the earth's crust, the downward cutting effect of streams has increased, making it too late to widen the river, causing the river valley to form narrow valleys and canyons. The bottom of the river is extremely linear, with steep walls and many beaches and rapid water. These unique geomorphological characteristics create Zhangjiajie's rich and unique tourism resources.

Zhangjiajie was established due to tourism and is one of the most important tourist cities in China. As the saying goes,"Jiuzhaigou looks at the water, Zhangjiajie looks at the mountains." In the core scenic area of Wulingyuan, 3,000 stone peaks rise from the ground, and 800 streams meander. People who come to Zhangjiajie for sightseeing are all fascinated by Wulingyuan's unique sandstone peak forest landform and magnificent karst landscape, as if they are in the Shenshan Wonderland, so Zhangjiajie is known as "the original of Chinese landscape painting" and "a reduced fairyland, a magnified bonsai".

But today we are not going to the most famous Wulingyuan Scenic Area in Zhangjiajie, but to the Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area closest to the city. To talk about how close it is, the mountain stop of the mountain climbing cable car in the scenic area is in the city center.

Tianmen Mountain was called Yunmeng Mountain in ancient times, also known as Yuping Mountain and Songliang Mountain. It is located 10 kilometers south of Zhangjiajie City. It is a platform shaped lonely mountain with four cliffs. The main peak has an altitude of 1,518.6 meters, and the relative height difference from the urban area at the foot of the mountain is more than 1300 meters. Therefore, it is particularly majestic and straight. The beauty of its skyline is typical of a famous mountain. The mountain is named for its rare natural wonder "Tianmen Cave" in the world. Tianmen Cave is a natural mountain penetrating cave located on the cliff of Tianmen Mountain at an altitude of more than 1260 meters. According to geological experts 'research, Tianmen Cave is an underground cave on the edge of the platform. The center of the cave entrance is the intersection of the east and west rock synclines. Due to structural force, the rock was crushed, collapsed and dissolved, and finally formed Tianmen Cave, a rare wonder of the world. According to historical records, in the sixth year of Yong 'an of Wu' an during the Three Kingdoms period (263 AD),"the wall of Songliang Mountain was opened in the middle, the north and south were clear, and the sky was as clear as a gate." Emperor Wu Jing (Sun Xiu) thought it was an auspicious sign and changed the name to Tianmen Mountain. For this purpose, Tianmen Prefecture was specially established.

Tianmen Mountain is one of the earliest famous mountains recorded in history. It is known as the first sacred mountain in western Hunan. It was approved as a national forest park in July 1992. The park is full of ancient trees and vines. The top of the mountain is relatively flat, preserving a complete primitive sub-forest, with many extremely precious and unique plant varieties, with a forest coverage rate of 90%. Moss is everywhere, stalagmites and stone buds are everywhere, and everything is like a natural bonsai. It is praised by the world as the most beautiful sky garden and celestial fairyland.

When you pass by the middle station, you can also see Tianmen Cave.
Below is the "Tongtian Avenue".

"Tongtian Avenue" is a winding road located in Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. It runs from the sign gate (gate of the scenic area) to the "upper ladder" at the foot of Tianmen Cave. It winds between the high mountains and cliffs and is the only way to pray for blessings and pilgrimage to "Tianmen". The only way to pass. Tongtian Avenue is only 10.77 kilometers long, but its altitude has increased sharply from 200 meters to 1300 meters, and the altitude drop is as high as 1100 meters. There are ninety-nine turns along the way, which means nine nights in the sky. Among them, sharp turns of 180 degrees can be found everywhere, interlocking and stacked layer upon layer, like a jade belt circling the sky, running between the cliffs of the deep gorges, and taking advantage of the mountain. It rises straight to the nine clouds. The cliffs on both sides of the avenue are thousands of high, and the empty valleys are deep. Along the way, you can appreciate the thrilling and breathtaking rise of Tianmen Mountain. It can be called "the world's number one highway wonder." However, this road is an internal road in the scenic area, and external vehicles are prohibited from passing through and you cannot drive yourself.

Our original plan was to take the cable car to the top. After touring the top of the mountain, take the escalator down to Tianmen Cave, and then go down the 999-step "upper ladder" to the cable car intermediate station (also the mountain station of the scenic area's environmentally friendly sightseeing bus). From here, we can take the scenic area environmentally friendly sightseeing bus to the gate of the scenic area at the foot of the mountain, and then transfer to the shuttle bus to return to the cable car station at the foot of the mountain. Unexpectedly, when purchasing tickets online, I was told that Tongtian Avenue was being repaired and closed, and environmentally friendly sightseeing buses in the scenic area were stopped. It's really disappointing that I can't appreciate the "wonder of the world's number one highway".

"Tongtian Avenue"

After arriving at Hilltop Station, you can have two options. One is to take the east line clockwise first and then the west line; the second is the opposite. Considering the light problem, we chose the route to take the western line first and the eastern line later.

There is a lot of fog in the morning
West Line Plank Road

The plank road in Xixian County is called Guigu Plank Road. It is located in Tianmen Mountain Fairy Seeking Wonderland Scenic Area. It starts from Yihongguan and ends at Xiaotianmen. It has a total length of 1600 meters and an average altitude of 1400 meters. It is suspended along the cliff on the upper side of Guigu Cave. Named.

Different from other plank roads, the entire Ghost Valley plank road is neither on the top of the cliff nor on the side of the cliff. Instead, the entire line stands in the middle of the cliff, giving people the feeling of rising and falling with the cliff. Standing on the plank road overlooking the mountains, the ancients felt that "they would climb the top of the mountain and see the small mountains" spontaneously.

There is an additional charge of 5 yuan for the glass plank road on the west line.
Yunmeng Xianding

Yunmeng Xianding is the commanding height of Tianmen Mountain, with an altitude of 1,518.6 meters. Tianmen Mountain was originally known as Yunmeng Mountain. It is said that it is a sacred mountain that borders both immortals and mortals. The commanding height of Tianmen Mountain is also named Yunmeng Xianding or Yunmeng Peak because it is closer to the Immortal World.

On the top of the mountain is a lookout tower imitating the Ming and Qing Dynasties style, hidden among the lush mountains. Stand here, condescending, have a wide view, and you can look around. Looking from afar, the sixteen peaks of Tianmen Mountain have different shapes, Tianmen Mountain Temple is majestic and magnificent, and Zhangjiajie City is prosperous. It's like being in a fairyland, making people feel relaxed and happy.

You can take a cable car to climb Yunmeng Xianding for an additional fee. You can also climb on foot. But the direction is different. Take the cable car to the top from Tianmen Mountain Temple at the end of the western line, and walk to the top from the starting point of the western line (that is, the mountain station of the main cable car).

The gate of Tianmen Mountain Temple

Tianmen Mountain Temple is one of the three main tourist attractions in Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area. The temple is located in the mountain nest, with a wide view and a view to the southeast. All the mountains are small, and it truly has the spirit of being a mountain alone.

Tianmenshan Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty and is the Buddhist center in western Hunan. Since its establishment, there have been many believers and the incense is booming. The old temple faces north and south. On the temple gate, there is a high inscription "Tianmen Immortal Mountain". The couplet on both sides reads "There is a sky outside the sky and no night, and there is no mountain on the mountain and the mountain is supreme." The entire temple has three entrances and two halls, and behind the hall is Guanyin Hall, which is magnificent. Outside the temple, ancient trees reach the sky, and there is a seven-level pagoda not far away, which is quaint and quiet. Since the Republic of China, the old temple on Tianmen Mountain has been declining day by day, and only some of its relics can be found.

Today's Tianmen Mountain Temple was rebuilt on the original temple ruins and adopts the Qing Dynasty official style. It consists of mountain gate, bell and drum tower, Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Hall, Guanyin Pavilion, Sutra Pavilion, Dharma Hall and other buildings. Among them, the shape of Guanyin Pavilion is particularly ingenious. Its floors are equipped with two bright and three dark floors. The structure is complex and unique. Its complex structure and exquisite shape are comparable to the famous classical buildings in China.

There is stored in the temple a Sakyamuni Buddha relic donated by Lumbini of Nepal. It is one of only five in China. On June 8, 2009, the day the Buddha relics were laid, it rained heavily in Zhangjiajie. Tens of thousands of Chinese and foreign tourists and Buddhist believers braved the rain to witness this solemn moment.

Tianmen Cave, which is above the Subi of Qian Xun and opposite the north and south, is 131.5 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters deep. It looks like a mirror inlaid on the vast sky. It is towering and tall, leaning against the sky, like a gateway to the sky. The weather here changes myriad, with white clouds and purple fog all year round, dense and steaming, and majestic. There have always been three major wonders: "Sky Gate Spitting Mist","Sky Gate Spiritual Light" and "Plum Blossom Rain". Tianmen Cave is a holy place for local people to pray and make wishes, and the folk custom of "climbing to heaven to pray" still follows.

In 1999, world aerobatic flying masters from Russia, the United States, Hungary, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania flew through Tianmen Cave, causing a sensation around the world and creating a world Guinness Record. Tianmen Cave has since attracted worldwide attention. The 2006 Russian Air Force Tianmen Mountain aerobatic performance in Zhangjiajie escalated the suspense of Tianmen Cave and once again became the global focus.

Climbing the ladder is the only way to climb Tianmen Gate. There are 999 levels in total, symbolizing supremacy and everlasting life. It has become a way for visitors from all directions to make pilgrimage to Tianmen and climb to the sky. The five slowness and four steepness of the ladder correspond to the meaning of nine-nine, which is like the principle that the road of life has ups and downs, and that only after experiencing ups and downs can one become a weapon.

There are five platforms on the left and right sides: "Yu Yu","Qin Se","Changsheng","Qingyun" and "Ruyi", which symbolize wealth, happiness, longevity, wealth and happiness respectively.
