Four famous Buddhist mountains: Mount Wutai| Emeishan| jiuhuashan
Scenic spots in Zhejiang: Hangzhou (Part 1)| Hangzhou (Part 2)
The four famous Buddhist mountains, Wutai Mountain in Shanxi, Emei Mountain in Sichuan and Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui, have been shared in previous articles. Today, I bring you the last famous Buddhist mountain, the ashram of Guanyin Bodhisattva-Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang.
Mount Putuo is significantly different from Mount Wutai, Mount Emei and Mount Jiuhua: each of the three mountains is a mountain, and Putuo is a small island in the sea; the altitude of the three mountains is over 3000 meters, and the altitude of the three mountains is nearly 1500 meters. The average altitude of Mount Putuo is one to two hundred meters, and the highest point is less than 300 meters; the three mountains are scenic spots dominated by Buddhist scenery and supplemented by living facilities. In addition to Buddhist scenery, Putuo also has schools, hospitals, residential areas, buses, theaters... It is a small city with complete facilities.
(Longsha New Village, residential area)
Putuo Mountain is an island in the Zhoushan Islands. It is shaped like a black dragon (seen horizontally like an ox) lying in the East China Sea. It faces Shenjiamen and Zhujiajian in the Zhoushan Islands across the sea. It is known as the "Sea and Sky Buddha Land".
To reach the Haitian Buddhist Kingdom, a boat is indispensable. Starting from Ningbo, take a bus to the Zhoushan Cross-Sea Bridge in the east to Zhujiajian. The road keeps switching between mountains and seas. Zhoushan has more than 1300 islands, of which nearly 100 are inhabited. Connecting these islands are bridges or ships of large and small.
(Bypass the green mountains in a while)
(Later, he crossed the Canghai again)
Two hours later, I arrived at Zhujiajian Port and took a passenger ship to Putuo Mountain. Putuo Island was close in front of me. The boat traveled in about ten minutes to reach the island, and the one-and-a-half-day trip to Putuo Mountain began.
Putuo Mountain is located in the East China Sea of the Zhoushan Islands east of Hangzhou Bay. The island is not large, 8.6 kilometers long from north to south and 3.5 kilometers wide from east to west. There are sandy beaches, strange rocks and other marine scenery, as well as Buddhist landscapes such as caves and ravines, and Buddhist temples. The sounds of the tide and illusions are integrated into one, and the mountains, seas and sky blend harmoniously. It truly lives up to the reputation of the "Sea and Sky Buddhist Kingdom" and the "Putuo Holy Land".
After arriving on the island, I first went to the hotel to put my luggage. The owner was a Buddhist believer and had a pleasant face. The room layout was also full of Buddhism's simplicity and meaning.
Opposite the hotel is a vegetarian buffet restaurant called "Pilgrim Canteen". It is affordable and delicious. It is full of soup and rice. Let's go and see the scenery.
Putuo Mountain is divided into Zizhu Forest Scenic Area, Nantianmen Scenic Area, Xitian Scenic Area, Puji Temple Scenic Area, Fayu Temple Scenic Area, Fanyindong Scenic Area, Fodingshan Scenic Area and Baotuo Lecture Temple Scenic Area from south to north. In addition, there is also a Luojia Mountain Island floating east of Putuo Island. The place I live is closest to the Puji Temple Scenic Area. I will go to Puji Temple first.
Walking through the Longsha Tunnel, the first thing I see is the Putuoshan Theater. The large-scale panoramic stage play "Guanyin" is staged here every day. I didn't watch it, but according to people who have seen it, the vision is shocking and it feels like being in the Buddhist world.
Moving forward, I saw a pool of lake water surrounded by green trees and a solemn and deep Buddhist temple by the water's edge, and I came to the Puji Temple Scenic Area.
Puji Temple Scenic Area is the center of Putuo Mountain Scenic Area. It is composed of Puji Temple, Haiyin Pond, Duo Pagoda, Baibusha, Xianrenjing, Chaoyang Cave and other scenic spots. The cultural landscape and natural scenery are harmoniously integrated and beautiful. Among the twelve scenic spots of Putuo Mountain,"Lotus Pond Night Moon","Fahua Lingdong" and "Rising Sun" are here.
Puji Zen Temple is the largest temple in Putuo Mountain and the location of Putuo Mountain Buddhist Association. It was built during the Yuanfeng period of the Song Dynasty (1078 - 1085), and all the abbot of the mountain in successive dynasties lived here. The temple is large in scale, with five steps on a floor and ten steps on a pavilion. Among them, the Dayuan Hall is the main hall of Puji Temple. The 8.8-meter-high Pilu Guanyin is enshrined in the hall as the statue of a Bodhisattva. The "thirty-two-shouldering bodies of Guanyin" are seated on both sides. To show that the Guanyin Master senses all living things in the world, and there is an endless stream of good men and women who come here to pray for blessings.
There are also many Jungle Zen monasteries around Puji Temple, such as Xiqitang, Xilai Zen Courtyard, Jishan Hall, etc. Each courtyard has tall banyan trees and pine and cypresses planted outside. In Buddhism, the place where monks live is called a "jungle". The "jungle" of Puji Temple is full of incense and lush. This jungle and the other "jungle" complement each other and complement each other.
Outside Puji Temple, there is a stele "Civil and military officials, military and civilians, etc. Dismount here". It is said that this is an imperial edict issued by the emperor. In the past, when officials came here, civil officials got off their sedan chairs, and military officers got off their horses to show their respect for Guanyin Bodhisattva.
There is a stone bridge on Haiyin Pool. On the stone bridge is a six-corner pavilion called "Dingxiang Pavilion". In the pavilion, there is an imperial stele, which records the construction of Puji Temple and the history of Putuo Mountain. It was written by Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty.
Walking through Dingxiang Pavilion, a white tower stands in front of you. This is the Duo Pagoda on Mount Putuo, also known as the "Prince Tower". The Duo Pagoda is the only oldest building in Putuo Mountain that maintains its original appearance. It is together with the Jiulong Hall, the only surviving palace building in the Nanjing Forbidden City in the Ming Dynasty in Fayu Temple, the Yangzhi Guanyin Monument carved based on the portrait of Guanyin painted by Yan Liben, a painter of the early Tang Dynasty in Yangzhi 'an, and the rare species on Foding Mountain, called the "Four Treasures of Putuo".
Continue eastward and arrive at Baibusha, which is only more than a hundred meters away from the Duo Pagoda, so it is also called "Pagoda Front Sand".
The sand is pure at a hundred steps away, and the beach is wide, flat and beautiful. Standing on the beach and looking far away, the sea is open, the sea breeze is blowing, and the scenery is remote and beautiful.
There are many strange stones on the beach, and there are meaningful Buddhist stone carvings on the stones, such as the "stone master" below engraved with "Repent and be saved". Although Buddhism says that "the sea of bitterness is boundless, and Repent is saved", the view from the sand over a hundred steps forward is magnificent. The sea view, and back, the beautiful mountain light is refreshing everywhere.
Walking along the Baibu Sand, I feel like a pavilion on the beach: I am at ease.
A stone carving at the end of Baibusha has the inscription "The First Buddhist Kingdom of the Aurora"."Aurora" is the name for China in ancient India. Many famous cliff stone carvings will be seen below.
Further north, we walked around a yellow wall surrounded by ancient trees and came to the Immortal Well.
This well is more than ten feet deep into the ground, and spring water pours out from the bottom of the well. It is cool and cold in the heat. It is said that An Qisheng, a Taoist immortal during the Qin Dynasty, used this well to draw water to refine pills. Mei Fu of the Western Han Dynasty and Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin Dynasty also came here to draw water to refine pills, so it was named after the Immortal Well.
Not far from Xianren Well, an ancient pavilion stands tall in the east amidst the green trees. Standing in the ancient pavilion and looking up, the Sun-viewing Pavilion is in front of you.
Sunviewing Pavilion, as the name suggests, is the place to watch the sunrise in the morning near the sea in the east of Putuo Island. This pavilion is dignified and elegant, antique, and beautiful scenery. It is amazing to view the sea by leaning on the railing.
Your Excellency Asahi has Chaoyang Cave, which is a natural cave with deep depths and a good place to watch the sunrise. It is also good to listen to the tide here.
Chaoyang Cave carries hundreds of steps of sand and thousands of steps of sand to the left and right. Looking north, you will see the broad and long "thousand-step sand"-one of the twelve scenic spots on Putuo Mountain. At this time, a ray of sunlight leaked through the cracks in the clouds and shone on the coastal boundary line and the intersection of sand and trees, making it a spectacle.
Qianbusha already belongs to the Fayu Temple Scenic Area. Let's go back to the central road and visit other scenic spots in the scenic area.
Fayu Temple Scenic Area faces mountains and sea. It is composed of Fayu Temple, Qianbusha, Wanghai Pavilion, Wuzu Monument, Yangzhi 'an, Shuangquan' an, Dacheng 'an and other scenic spots. Along the way, the mountains are undulating and there are Buddhist forests are covered. The atmosphere is rich.
Opposite Qianbusha is Yueling Zen Temple. Ancient trees in the garden stand tall, facing the mountains and the sea. The environment is beautiful and full of Zen.
Not far from the north side of Yueling Zen Temple is the Dacheng Zen Temple, with its blue buildings and yellow walls, which are particularly eye-catching.
The area of Dacheng Zen Temple is the highest in Putuo Mountain nunnery. The Water-Moon Guanyin statue enshrined in the Yuantong Hall of the main hall is the second to none among the Guanyin Bodhisattva statues. Shuiyue Guanyin is one of the thirty-three-body Guanyin. It has gorgeous clothes and beautiful figure. It is called the "Oriental Venus".
On the way to Fayu Zen Temple, Mahayana Zen Forest passed a pool. The fountain in the pool was like flowers. The pool was full of green, the autumn atmosphere was strong, and the scenery was picturesque.
There is a lawn by the pool, which is a paradise for pigeons. It flies to the roof for a while and walks on the lawn for a while. It is very lively.
Passing through the fairyland, I saw a majestic archway with the words "Sea and Sky Buddha Kingdom" written on it. After the archway, I finally arrived at Fanyu Zen Temple.
Fayu Temple, Puji Temple and Huiji Temple are also known as the Three Great Monastery of Putuo. They were founded in the eighth year of Wanli of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the spring and stone were secluded and the grass was formed as an nunnery. It took the meaning of "Fayu Temple" and was named "Haichao Temple", which was later destroyed in the war of war. In the thirty-eighth year of Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1699), Chaoyan awarded Jinxiu Temple to repair the main hall, and awarded the title "Tianhua Fa Yu" and "Fa Yu Temple" to determine the current name.
There are 294 existing temples in Fayu Temple, which follow the mountains and are upgraded one after another at the entrance. There is the Hall of Tianwang on the central axis, followed by the Jade Buddha Hall. There is the Bell and Drum Tower between the two halls, followed by the Guanyin Hall, the Imperial Monument Hall, the Daxiong Hall, the Sutra Tower, and the Abbot Hall. The layout is grand and lofty, and the weather is extraordinary. The thousand-step golden sand not far away is empty and comfortable, and the sound of the waves roar day and night. Wang Anshi of the Northern Song Dynasty once praised it as "the trees are colorful in autumn and the books are held up, and the bells and waves answer back."
Here in the Guanyin Hall, there are Jiulong caisines and glazed tiles moved from the Ming Dynasty palace in Nanjing, which are treasures of Putuo Mountain.
There are two juniper trees on one side of the temple's Daxiong Hall. They are heterozygous. The trees are beautiful and the trunks are curved. Guo Moruo once wrote the inscription "Dragon and Phoenix Ancient Cypress".
From Fayu Temple, you head north along Xiangyun Mountain Fragrant Road to Foding Mountain Scenic Area, which is the highest scenic spot in Putuo Mountain. Huiji Temple, one of the three major temples, is located here.
Foding Mountain is composed of scenic spots such as Xiangyun Road, Haitian Buddha Cliff, Yunfu Stone, Huiji Zen Temple, Putuo Goose Ears, Knife Splitting Stone, etc. There are also the "Huading Cloud Sea" and "Tea Mountain Suyu Fog" of the twelve scenic spots in Putuo.
Foding Mountain is one of the most physically demanding attractions in Putuo Mountain. Seeing the Xiangyun Pavilion at the foot of the mountain means that the next hour or two will be a time to test your physical strength.
It rained during the climb, and the fog became heavier and heavier. By the time we reached the top of the mountain, the visibility was no more than ten meters. The mountain road is extremely difficult, but some believers actually kneel down and climb up, which is admirable.
On the mountain, you can see the famous scenery of Putuo-Haitian Buddha Country Cliff and Yunfu Stone. "Haitian Buddhist Kingdom" was written by Hou Jigao, a famous anti-Japanese hero in the Ming Dynasty. Because these four words summarize the characteristics of Putuo's scenic spot, they became the proxy name of Putuo Mountain. There is a small stone on the huge stone, standing tall and not falling, and there is often a scene surrounded by clouds and mist. In ancient times, it was called "Cloud Supporting Stone".
Climb up a short distance and arrive at Huiji Zen Temple.
In the early Ming Dynasty, monk Huiyuan built a mountain top and founded Huiji Temple. In the 58th year of Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1793), the nunnery was expanded into a temple named Huiji Temple. The whole temple has four halls, seven palaces and six floors. The layout is rare in other Buddhist forests. Behind the Tianwang Hall, the Daxiong Hall, the Great Compassion Hall, the Sutra Building, the Jade Emperor Hall, and the Abbot Room are all on a parallel line, which is quite the architectural style of the eastern Zhejiang garden. The main hall of Huiji Temple is the Daxiong Hall, which houses the Buddha statue of Sakyamuni. The Tang Dynasty Guanyin statue enshrined in the Great Compassion Hall on the right is the oldest Buddha statue art in Putuo Mountain.
Not only the layout of the temple, but the decoration in the temple also has the charm of Jiangnan gardens.
Outside the temple, there is a sculpture of the poet Lu You and a Zen master talking. Lu You once wrote a poem "Good Things are Near (Climbing the Peak of Meixian Mountain and Looking at the Sea·Eighth of the Twelve)":"Wave your sleeves and go up the West Peak, leaving the sky alone without a ruler. Under the stick, you face the whale sea, and count the smoke sails. I am greedy to watch the clouds dance with the blue luan, and it is already evening on my way home. Thank you for blowing the pine trees in the mountains and saving you for your hospitality." The artistic conception is quite similar to the Buddha Top Mountain.
There are also several Putuo horned trees and an extremely precious mother tree on the top of the mountain. This is a unique tree species in Putuo Mountain and a national-level key protected plant. This is the only wild mother tree in the world. It is located on the west side of Huiji Temple in Foding Mountain. The age is 260 years old.
Shortly after descending, I saw the scene of a knife splitting stone. It was a collapsed boulder, with the cracks in the middle of it being joint cracks, like a giant knife splitting a boulder.
After walking around Foding Mountain, we will go to the Fanyin Cave Scenic Area to listen to the sound of Fanyin.
Fanyin Cave is in the east of Fayu Temple, northeast of Putuo Island, and there is also a Chaoyin Cave in the south of Putuo Island. Clear Chaoyin sounds can be heard in both places, and each has its own characteristics. They are called "Shuangdong Chaoyin". From Fayu Temple, pass Feisha 'ao and Xianghui' an, you will arrive at Qinggulei Mountain, which stands out in the easternmost part of Putuo. Fanyin Cave is at the foot of the mountain.
The green drum base is inserted into the Putuo Ocean. Here, there are often stormy waves beating against the cliffs, the sound of the tide shaking the cave, and the roar sounds day and night, like the beating of drums, so it is also called "the beating of drums". There is a natural cave at the southeast end of Qinggulei Mountain. The cave rocks are cut by axes and the cliffs are dangerous. The cliffs on both sides form a gate, which is Fanyin Cave. There are many amazing caves in Putuo Mountain, and the majesty and steepness of Fanyin Cave are unmatched by other caves. It is said that this is also the place where the spirit and auspicious sign of the Guanyin Grand Master appear.
A temple is built against a mountain in the upper part of Fanyin Cave. The layout is clever and magnificent. In the temple, a statue of Guanyin is enshrined in the Guanyin Hall. It holds rosary beads and feet turtle fish. It looks at all living beings with kindness. In the Arhat Hall, 500 wooden arhats are enshrined in various shapes and lifelike.
After walking around Guanyin Cave, it was already dark. I rested for the night in a room surrounded by the breath of Prajna (wisdom), and visited the remaining attractions the next day.
Early the next morning, I headed west to the Xitian Scenic Area.
Xitian Scenic Area is located in the southwest of Putuo Island. It is the scenic spot with the richest strange stone landscape. It is composed of thousand-year-old camphor trees, Xinzi Stone, Yuantong 'an, Meifu' an, Pantuo Stone, Ergui Tingfa Stone, Guanyin Cave and other scenic spots."Pantuo Sunset" and "Meiwan Spring Dawn" of the twelve scenic spots in Putuo are also here.
While going up the mountain, I suddenly saw a moth landing on the rock. When I approached it and took a closer look, I couldn't see it. I was interested. How could it disappear into thin air? After looking carefully for a while, it turned out that he was crawling on the grayish-white stone surface and hid himself with his protective color. A small interlude.
Not long after moving forward, we arrived at the first strange stone landscape-Ergui Tingfa Stone.
Two small stones attached to a large stone look like two turtles. One turtle looks back at the top of the rock, as if waiting, while the other turtle rises straight up against the stone, holding its head high, looking anxious. It is said that the two turtles came to inquire about the words of the Dragon King of the East China Sea. They were fascinated by the words and forgot the date of their return, so they transformed into a stone.
Moving forward, we came to a wide square, with a pile of stones lying in the center. The top half of the boulder on the right was particularly eye-catching, like a chicken about to fly.
This is the famous Pantuo Stone.
The Pantuo Stone is formed by two stones stacked together. The lower stone has a wide bottom and a sharp top, with a circumference of more than 20 meters. It is a plate; the upper stone has a flat bottom and a sharp top, nearly 7 meters wide, which is a stone. Looking at it like hanging, looking at it like falling, it is a unique place in the Buddhist country. Whenever the sun sets in the west, the multicolored light shines, which is called "Pantuo Sunset" and is one of the twelve scenic spots in Putuo.
Continue forward, pass through Meifu Zen Temple, and arrive at Yuantong Zen Forest.
Yuantong Zen Forest was built in 1577 in the fifth year of Wanli of the Ming Dynasty. It was founded by Monk Yuanxian. It was expanded repeatedly during the Qing Dynasty to form a large nunnery on the West Heaven Gate. This is the top of the West Mountain, with the mountains behind them and facing the sea. From the temple, you can look at the surrounding mountains and green mountains. You can sit and watch the rising and falling tides on the Lotus Ocean. The atmosphere is quiet and the scenery is beautiful.
Walking out of the nunnery, I saw many cliff stone carvings along the way. The writing of the Buddhist Kingdom made people feel peaceful and profound.
Finally, we came to the famous "Heart" stone, which is a huge "Heart" character on a huge rock. How big it is, you can see by comparing the passers-by in the picture below.
"Xin" is five meters long and seven meters wide. It can accommodate eight or nine people sitting together at a point in the center, and the whole character can accommodate nearly a hundred people to meditate. It is the largest stone inscription on Putuo Mountain. It was engraved by Bao Toutuo, a monk in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. It is said that Guanyin Bodhisattva once said the "Heart Sutra" here.
After the Xitian Scenic Area, head southeast to the Zizhu Forest Scenic Area to admire the landmark landscape of Putuo Mountain-the Nanhai Guanyin Statue.
Zizhu Forest is located in the southeast corner of Putuo Island and consists of Chaoyin Cave, Don't Go Guanyin Yuan, Nanhai Guanyin Statue, Xifang Temple and other scenic spots. In addition to the statue of Guanyin, there are also some landscapes with unbelievable names, such as "unwilling to go to Guanyin Yuan","forbidden to sacrifice oneself to burn finger stele", etc. Each place has a story, let us go and find out.
Entering the gate, I finally saw this statue of Guanyin. I have also seen a statue of Guanyin in Nanshan, Sanya. To be honest, it is more spectacular than the Guanyin in front of me. The Guanyin in Sanya is 108 meters tall, 15 meters taller than the Statue of Liberty, while the Guanyin in front of me is only 33 meters, and the platform still occupies 13 meters. However, more tourists come here to worship Guanyin than Sanya.
Believers laid down three incense sticks to express their three-career worship of Buddha, Dharma, and monks. There was an endless stream of tourists competing to kneel down, chanting words and longing in their hearts. There are also believers who circle around the Buddha statue in order to encircle the Buddha. Buddhists believe that sparing the Buddha is moving closer to the Buddha and the Bodhisattva step by step, allowing them to confess their sins and accumulate merit.
There is a Bodhisattva standing nearby. Looking into the distance, there is a "reclining Buddha" in the sea. The small island with a far square shape like a reclining Buddha is Luojiashan Island southeast of Putuo Island. It is only 5 kilometers away from Putuo Island and can be reached in a few minutes by boat. It is said that Master Guanyin once practiced on Luojia Mountain Island.
Not far from the statue of Guanyin is the Western Temple, also known as the "Western Jingyuan", which was founded by Monk Fusheng in the early Republic of China. In the Yuantong Hall in the temple, there is a white marble carved statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. There are painted long scrolls of eighteen arhats on both walls, which are vivid and magnificent.
There is a huge stone under the cliff of the Western Anhai Sea. There is a deep footprint on the stone with clear toes. It is said that it was a miracle left by Bodhisattva Guanyin who flew from Luojia Mountain across the Lotus Ocean to Putuo Mountain to open a Taoist temple in order to save all living beings. It is called "Guanyin Jumping Stone", and the Western Annery is also called "Guanyin Jumping Nery".
There is a path sandwiched by yellow walls on the way to Guanyin Temple that refuses to go. Many tourists take photos here. Such undulating solid color walls can always serve as a beautiful background, such as the nine-winding Yellow River wall on Taizipo, Wudang Mountain, one red and one yellow., both wonderful.
On the way, we also passed the Buta Purple Bamboo Forest, which is also a Buddhist temple with strong incense. The plaque was inscribed by Kang Youwei in the eighth year of the Republic of China. It is said that this was once the place where the Guanyin Bodhisattva lived.
Out of the Zen Forest, we headed to the east coast. When we saw the buildings hidden in green grass and green trees, we refused to go to Guanyin Yuan. However, there are still some fascinating landscapes on the beach. Let's go there first.
In the distance of the bush path, there is a small pavilion standing between the blue sea and blue sky. There are many people gathered under the pavilion. There should be a wonderful scene there.
Walking closer and closer, it turns out that this ancient pavilion is called "Dandan Pavilion". The name sounds lovely to read, but the artistic conception it refers to is very profound."Dandan" is the appearance of rippling waves. Cao Cao's famous sentence in "Watching the Sea","Why is the water calm, and the mountains and islands stand tall" depicts the flat and broad sea under the rugged cliffs and expresses a calm mentality of calm.
On the towering rocks under the Dandan Pavilion, there are many meditation believers. No matter how people come and go around them and the sound of the tide rises and falls in their ears, they remain unmoved and their spirits are like still water. In fact, the sun was strong that day, and it was not easy to sit on the exposed rock for a while. Why do you think they could sit for a long time?
There is a "meditation craze" in the modern West. Through meditation, you can reduce stress, even change brain structure, treat depression, and enhance memory... Widely used in clinical psychology, the "meditation craze" quickly spread to China and was popular among high-pressure urban people. But in fact, Western meditation comes from meditation in Eastern religions. Buddhism is called "meditation" and Taoism is called "meditation". It is a kind of practice method to focus one's thoughts. For non-religious people, a quiet environment is the best choice for meditation, but for believers, meditation in the "Buddhist Kingdom" is more meaningful and has better results. Under the portraits of Sakyamuni and others in the Jokhang Temple of the Potala Palace in Xizang, I saw blond Europeans sitting in meditation, unaware of the tourists coming and going.
There is a Tashi Bridge next to Dandan Pavilion. Crossing the bridge and going down to the seaside, you see Chaoyin Cave surrounded by rugged rocks.
Chaoyin Cave is half-immersed in the sea and has a depth of 30 meters. The coast here is tortuous, and there are two gaps in the roof of the cave, called "skylights". The tidal sea at the entrance of the cave is in the shape of an open mouth. It is hit by the waves day and night, and the tide surges into the cave., the momentum is like flying dragons and the sound is like thunder.
Not far from Chaoyin Cave, there is an appearance of Guanyin. There is a stone carving of Guanyin standing here. It is said that Guanyin Bodhisattva once appeared in this place many times. Since the Tang Dynasty Japanese monk Hui E and Silla merchants left the statue of Guanyin behind the cave, this place has always been regarded as the birthplace of the Haitian Buddhist Kingdom. This is probably why Putuo Mountain became the Guanyin Dojo. One of the reasons.
After walking far, I saw Guanyin Yuan that refused to go to Guanyin Yuan. The building is small, unique and unique, facing the sea on three sides, and the vegetation is green. The temple was built in the 13th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1276). When Prime Minister Bayan pacified Jiangnan, the Ming Dynasty Marshal Haladai visited Chaoyin Cave. He was impressed by the appearance of the Guanyin Great Scholar, so he built the temple on the cave. Since then, it has been repeatedly destroyed and built. Today's temple has a Tang Dynasty style and houses an eleven-sided, four-armed sitting statue of Guanyin.
The name "refused to go to Guanyin Temple" originated from the supernatural incident in which the Japanese eminent monk Zen Master Hui E left the statue of Guanyin treasure in Chaoyin Cave in the Tang Dynasty. According to mountain chronicles of the past dynasties, in the 13th year of the Tang Dynasty Dazhong (859), Hui 'e returned home from Mount Wutai with the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Her boat was blocked through the ocean surface of Mount Putuo. Thinking that the Bodhisattva was unwilling to go east, he docked and left the Buddha statue behind, which was worshipped by residents surnamed Zhang. It is called "unwilling to go to Guanyin Temple", which is a major reason why Mount Putuo became a Guanyin Taoist Temple.
There is a stone tablet outside the courtyard that says "It is forbidden to sacrifice your body and burn your fingers." It turns out that during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, the lie was spread in Putuo Mountain that "sacrificing your body can become a Buddha and burning your fingers to show sincerity." Many good men and women believed it and jumped into Chaoyin Cave to sacrifice their bodies, or burned their fingers before refusing to go to Guanyin Temple to show their sincerity to the Bodhisattva. Countless people died or were disabled. In order to dissuade this foolish behavior, Li Fen, the governor of the general town, and others erected a large stone tablet with six big characters engraved in the center reading "Prohibition to sacrifice one's life to burn one's fingers", and 87 small characters engraved on both sides, stating that "Guanyin Mercy's appearance is to save the suffering. How can you let someone sacrifice one's life to burn one's fingers?" Since then, the foolish thing of sacrificing one's life and burning one's fingers has been stopped.
The last stop is for us to visit the Nantianmen Scenic Area.
Nantianmen Gate is located on Nanshan Mountain at the southernmost tip of Putuo Mountain. It hangs into the sea alone, with huge rocks standing tall and dangerous rocks towering. It is said that this is the place where the Eight Immortals cross the sea. Zen Master Zhen Xie, the ancestor of Putuo Mountain Zen Sect, once planted his hair here.
On the way up the mountain, I saw many cliff stone carvings, which were very spectacular.
Not long after climbing the mountain along the stone road, I saw the Nantian Gate. Two huge stones stand on the wall like doors, with a stone stretching across them, and the inscription "South Heaven Gate" on the forehead. There are beautiful rocks inside the door and rich cliff stone carvings. If you pass through the door, you can see the vast blue sea and magnificent scenery.
On the side of the door are the four words "Mountain and Sea Grand View" inscribed by Lan Li, a general during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. There is Fan Yulin Palace inside the door, and there is a huge rock next to it, which can climb to the top of the rock. The top of the rock is flat, with two small pools. The pool water is clear and shining, commonly known as the Lion's Eye. There are stone carvings such as "Longhua Conference","Pillar of the South Sky", and "Isolated Coast" on the Rock.
After turning around Nantianmen Gate, the trip to Putuo Mountain is coming to an end. Outside Ciyun Zen Temple near the dock and under the Nanhai Holy Land Archway, a sculpture of a girl attracted my attention:
This is also a girl with a story: It is said that in ancient times, an aunt and sister-in-law came to Putuo on a ferry. When the boat docked, her aunt was rushing and did not dare to get off the boat and enter the mountains. Her aunt had no luck on pilgrimage, so she entered the mountain alone to pay homage to Buddha. At noon, the tide rose, and a village woman threw stones into the sea to pave the way and brought food to her sister-in-law. The sister-in-law realized that the Guanyin Master showed up to do good deeds and felt ashamed that she had no chance. From then on, the place where the aunt docked her sister-in-law boat was called the "Shoru Road Head", and the sculpture here was a famous place for Shoru.
In Mount Putuo and other Buddhist holy places, I have met many believers who worship Buddha and Bodhisattva, either with the joy of fulfilling their wishes or with urgent longing, and I have also met non-believers who despise this, believing that they are foolish and superstitious. Although I don't believe in Buddhism, I understand the significance of this belief to many people.
The biggest difference between humans and animals is that humans can think. This is a gift and a curse. Thoughts allow us to prepare for rainy days, create wealth, transcend all things, and feel the richness and excitement that other animals cannot feel. However, correspondingly, thoughts can make us miserable, empty, and make us jealous, anxious, irritable, uneasy... Let us experience the darkest hell that other animals cannot experience. There is also hunger and cold, and life and death. In addition to the extreme pain of flesh, human beings will also have another layer of extreme pain, and often this kind of pain is deeper, longer and more unbearable.
Therefore, people have faith.
Some of them were trembling with fear:
Some are humble and helpless:
Some shouted in their hearts:
Some prostrate themselves:
All living beings are merciful and compassionate.
Whether we believe or not, we are all practicing, hoping that one day we can realize, laugh at the sky and go out, and laugh at the clouds of red dust.
